petr25102018··on Ask HN: How deep do you go?
Definitely making the mistake all the time to go all in on a new topic :) But it is better to do it step by step and practice it.

petr25102018··on Underdog Devs: supporting formerly incarcerated and disadvantaged aspiring devs
Exactly. We see it again and again that years of experience don't matter unless it is with a specific tech, and tech gets replaced all the time.
petr25102018··on Scaling Relational SQL Databases (2020)
Thanks for the information. I wasn't aware of such feature at the time of writing the post.
petr25102018··on Ask HN: Do you still optimize/test websites for Firefox
I see the same (Microsoft Teams, and others) and it is frustrating.

Exactly. Unfortunately for many Americans history stops in the last century and at the geographical borders of the USA.
petr25102018··on Ask HN: Those who quit their jobs to travel the world, how did it go?
I didn't want to quit my job entirely, I just wanted to reduce it to part-time and spend the rest of the time writing my book [1]. My plan was to start with a transatlantic cruise from Colombia to Portugal in spring 2020 and then do some digital nomading in southern Spain and Portugal.

The cruise got cancelled and I spent 3/4 of the year stuck at home. I only managed to "escape" to Serbia in summer when the country opened its borders without requiring PCR test.

This year I was waiting to see where I could go. Some balkan countries like Montenegro, North Macedonia and Albania opened their borders, again without requiring the PCR test. I went and spent three weeks in Montenegro as pure vacation and after that moved to Albania where I am now. The situation in Montenegro got worse and the country has many restrictions in place now, while Albania remains open, including restaurants.

I am Czech and the situation in the Czech Republic is bad. The restrictions in place prevent anyone from having a normal life...

Now I only work on the book, nomading in Albania. Here in Durrës the life is not only normal, but fairly cheap and with amazing sea food. I pay 90 EUR/week for an apartment and go to have sea food lunch every day for like 5-8 EUR.

petr25102018··on Modern action films fetishize the body even as they desexualize it
But isn't this just an instinct not to defecate at the place where he/she plays and spends time? How can you be so sure that it is about privacy?
petr25102018··on Delphi Method
I first learned about the Delphi Method from the book Software Estimation: Demystifying the Black Art.

Although I have not used it in practice yet, I like the concept, especially for some more difficult (bigger) estimation tasks, so I am mentioning it in my book besides other "group estimation techniques".

It is true that this is basically async "planning poker".

petr25102018··on FastAPI framework, high perf, easy to learn, fast to code, ready for production
I really like FastAPI. The "fast" in the name means fast development. Using Python types to create endpoints and get auto-generated docs is a joy.

If you are looking for examples, feel free to check out mine with websockets [0] or how I run FastAPI with systemd and nginx [1] in production (I run several side projects on FastAPI).

petr25102018··on Ask HN: Is this upcoming course worth it?
I don't know these courses and I am not sure if anyone can help you without being more specific about what you want to achieve or how much you know already.

However I can recommend you CS50's Introduction to Artificial Intelligence with Python 2020 [0]. I made some notes from the course if you are interested here [1].

petr25102018··on Ask HN: What are you working on?
I am currently working on two main projects:

- A book on software development https://efficientdeveloper.com that should give people a good overview of things outside of programming itself (so the focus is on topics like the command line, testing, software estimation, processes etc.).

- An app https://contentwok.com to help bloggers and other content creators to understand more about their articles, compare with the competition and enhance the content to be more attractive. The most recent feature I added is the ability to find images automatically for articles (see it in action here: https://twitter.com/stribny/status/1341490526609149953).

petr25102018··on Ask HN: What technology did you recently use, but wouldn't like to use again?
Interesting. I actually have kinda bad experience with writing some integration for Shopify. Mainly I was under the impression that they have to be good since they are so famous, but the developer experience is lacking.

For instance, they are migrating REST API to GraphQL so something can be done using their official Python client, while some other things can't.

Great idea, bookmarked for the future.
petr25102018··on Ask HN: Show me your half baked project
Contentwok: https://contentwok.com/

The idea is to make creating & publishing content a bit simpler. The possibilities in the space are endless, but I started with an "automatic image finder". The way this works is that you just copy-paste your article/text or just provide an URL to already existing one and the tool will automatically recommend images that you can use in the article based on the context (currently from Unsplash).

petr25102018··on Show HN: DevBooks – Help Developers find indy books
Nice initiative!

I will publish my own book this year so it is great to see some love for indie publishing :-)

I would also be very much interested in finding some reviewers that would be willing to help review say 2-3 chapters of my book in exchange for getting the final version. Is anybody here interested in that or do you know of a place where I could get some interested beta-readers?

petr25102018··on Hell Yes CSS
For folks who bought this or consider buying it, help me please understand why?

I know I am not the target audience since I know CSS enough but I think that this is just a very short reference to some aspects of CSS that can't help you much?

petr25102018··on Ask HN: How do you prevent eyestrain with daily computer use?
Other people are already commenting what to do while you work, I will tell you what to do when your eyes are already tired. Go to finish-style sauna. Whenever I am tired after a day with a computer and go to sauna, it completely resets me.

petr25102018··on Monica: Personal CRM. Remember everything about your friends, family and etc.
It is funny, because my app https://contactcache.com started like that. It was an Electron app working completely locally. Gradually I moved to a web app that can work locally in the browser, as long as the browser doesn't delete the local storage.
petr25102018··on Writing a technical book: from idea to print
