peterstjohn··on Charting the American Debt Crisis
Anything from Janurary 2009, which is actually when he took office?

http://cbo.gov/ftpdocs/99xx/doc9957/01-07-Outlook.pdf

(Page 11: "CBO currently projects that the deficit this year will total $1.2 trillion, or 8.3 percent of GDP. That total, however, does not include the effects of any future legislation.")

Heh - thanks, a mix-up with Jekyll there. Email sent - and I'll be bringing quite a bit of chocolate over!

If only I knew! It should be relatively soon now (next month or so), but we've managed to hit so many bumps along the way, including a period where the visa application sat untouched in Texas for almost six months last year, that I don't want to jinx it :).

Durham gets a bit of a bad rep from the rest of the state, but it's an awesome little city on the quiet - in addition to the tech startup scene, it has a blossoming food truck community, a big arts scene, tons of bars, and they didn't bat an eyelid when my wife and I applied to get married by CCB Plaza in Pac-Man outfits last year :).

(and on that note, when I finally get this damn visa, anybody in the area interested in hiring somebody with sysadmin / JavaScript/Ruby development experience? ;))

peterstjohn··on Clojure Conj 2011 Nov 10-12 in Durham, NC
My first visit was in January 2003 (I was studying at UNC-Chapel Hill at the time), and it looked like a neutron bomb had hit the centre of the city. If you'd told me then that seven years later, I'd be getting married in the open air of the city centre, I would have laughed in your face. It has improved hugely, and yes, there's still a-ways to go, but I'm looking forward to being there for more than a month at a time! (not a paid shill on behalf of the Durham Tourist Board, I assure you! :))

Hmm, there's the Marriott Conference Center in town (where the Full Frame documentary festival is held every year), but I guess that might be a little too big…(or booked out)

Because it's awesome! Microbreweries, a wonderful community, excellent food, and you can cross off the #35 place you must visit in 2011 according to the New York Times!

(I recommend Scratch for breakfast, Toast for lunch, and Dos Perros for dinner…)

(currently waiting for my visa to come through so I can join my wife there, so forgive me for waxing lyrical about the place :))

peterstjohn··on "Erase and rewind": Thoughts on the BBC's plans to delete 172 websites
This is true, but the BBC were extremely grateful for the copyright infringement that has seen the rescue of Q, Doctor Who, and countless other series - they may come to see that again (and to be honest, the chances of the BBC suing are probably very slight).
peterstjohn··on Why Atom was created
That's not all that fair on Mark (who yes, can be just as bad) - there was a desire to fix things within RSS 2.0, but Winer refused to update the spec to fix things like the Reuters problem. Atom seemed like the only way to move things forward at the time...
peterstjohn··on 18 year old BBC Micros used in retro programming class
Depends what A-Level subject they're taking and school; at my school, they're taught Pascal and C (possibly moving into Objective-C this term if I finish installing the Macs into my department before the end of next week!)
