peterstjohn··on What Record-Low Unemployment Looks Like in America
U4: U3 + "discouraged workers", or those who have stopped looking for work because current economic conditions make them believe that no work is available for them.
peterstjohn··on Apache Spark Scale: A 60 TB+ production use case
I knocked up a quick Ansible script this morning. It is _very_ rough right now and is more like 'here's what you could do' (and you have to compile perf-map-agent beforehand), but I got it working on a small cluster: https://github.com/falloutdurham/spark-flame
peterstjohn··on The Art of Monitoring
Thanks!
peterstjohn··on The Art of Monitoring
Hi graycat - could I get a copy of that paper as well, please? Thanks!
peterstjohn··on 2016 Spark Summit East Keynote
Ah, thanks! I have unfortunately been too busy to watch the streams this week, and assumed it was Connect because I think Confluent is/was doing a talk with Kafka Connect and Spark at the summit.
peterstjohn··on 2016 Spark Summit East Keynote
I think it's support for Kafka Connect, new in Kafka 0.9: http://kafka.apache.org/090/documentation.html#connect
peterstjohn··on The Twelve Days of Crisis – A Retrospective on Linode’s Holiday DDoS Attacks
Surely something like this: https://blog.linode.com/2016/01/05/security-notification-and... doesn't inspire confidence?
peterstjohn··on Announcing Spark 1.6
Backpressure is in 1.5+ by setting spark.streaming.backpressure.enabled=true (https://spark.apache.org/docs/latest/streaming-programming-g...). Like you, I'm looking forward to the out-of-order data support.
peterstjohn··on SKA, world's largest radio telescope, will be headquartered in the UK
This is Madness!
peterstjohn··on BBC gives children mini-computers in Make it Digital scheme
That's not exactly what happened - the BBC Micro project called for bids from UK companies and Acorn's bid won. It wasn't something that was done in-house.

(and the Beeb was released before the Speccy anyhow)

peterstjohn··on Announcing Graylog v1.0 GA
Hurrah - good to see that the Elasticsearch dependency is no longer locked to a rather old version (that bit me a few times when setting up a cluster last year). I'm still a bit wary about having to spin up MongoDB for it as well, though…
peterstjohn··on Just had a heart attack
Oh my goodness…glad to hear you're okay.
peterstjohn··on Stop using Nagios (so it can die peacefully)
I'd be interested to hear about that too - often Nagios can spend much of its time being reconfigured than actually monitoring…
peterstjohn··on UK Court: David Miranda Detention Legal Under Terrorism Law
Let's also remember that for a long time, several political parties were also not allowed to have their voices broadcast, either.
peterstjohn··on Christ, I hate Blackboard
God bless that man.
peterstjohn··on Super Rare NES game in eBay auction at $89,000
I was hoping it was a NES version of Mire Mare, myself.

"Oh, just use keys * to work out what's there."

"No, wait, don't…!"

peterstjohn··on HealthCare.gov deferred final security check, could leak personal data
It was part of an organised plan to try and sabotage Obamacare, having lost the legislative battle and the Presidential election.
peterstjohn··on HealthCare.gov deferred final security check, could leak personal data
And remember when they were so angry at that they voted in the candidate that vowed to repeal Obamacare in the next election.

Wait.

peterstjohn··on HealthCare.gov’s glitches prompt Obama to call in expert troubleshooters
Many of the states refused to create their own exchanges, thus the Federal site needed to be more extensive than originally planned (not that's an excuse for the screw-ups at all). States that have their own exchanges seem to be doing better, from anecdotal evidence supplied so far…
peterstjohn··on Putin: A Plea for Caution From Russia
"we must not forget that God created us equal."

As long as you're not gay.

peterstjohn··on Patent Troll Forced To Settle Frivolous Lawsuit Against One-Man Business
It's been over 13 years since I graduated and I still remember his varied and wonderful choice of trousers ;).
peterstjohn··on How Silicon Valley Perfected Ice Cream
Heston has been doing nitro ice-cream for at least a decade at this point - it's a fairly common technique in higher-end restaurants.
peterstjohn··on British aerospace company claims biggest engine advance since the jet
Here's a documentary that was broadcast on BBC4 a couple of months ago about Bond and his quixotic journey to get HOTOL/Skylon into the sky:

It includes a test-firing of the new heat-exchanger at the end.

peterstjohn··on Show HN: Recruit web developers by having them build a web app
The nice thing was that after you passed the initial interview, the company would let you start whenever (within reason, obviously). You'd send them an email that you were ready, they'd send details, and the clock would start ticking from then. Much more relaxed.
peterstjohn··on Show HN: Recruit web developers by having them build a web app
There's definitely some merit in this approach over something like Fizzbuzz and whiteboard problems. At my previous place of employment [1] , after the initial interview, you were given 48 hours to produce a simple web addressbook app. You could use anything that you wanted to produce the app - at the end of the 48 hour period, you had to supply thme with the code and instructions on how to install it on a Ubuntu instance. It was actually quite fun (and then after getting the job and testing other people's entries, you begin to see how it separated people with impressive CVs who couldn't program for toffee, and others who had much less experience, but managed to come up with something that worked!)

[1] That would be Open Source Integrators, a great Durham-based outfit who I believe are still looking for people to staff their Chicago offices: http://osintegrators.com/

peterstjohn··on Assange loses extradition appeal
I still don't understand this, though. Under the US-UK extradition treaty (signed into law in the UK in 2003, in the US in 2006, I think), all the US has to do is provide the UK with reasonable suspicion that Assange committed a crime within the US, and the British would hand him over. Is the Swedish extradition treaty vastly different?
peterstjohn··on Arm unveils 1mm x 1mm 32bit chip: "years of battery life"
On the other hand, the BBC Micro would almost certainly not have been the success it was without the Beeb and the lift it gave to Acorn in the educational market.
peterstjohn··on A human review of the Kindle Fire
Fair enough, though I'd suggest that iBooks' position as the Apple book reader will mean that most people who download apps will have it (though I know there's a sizable amount of users who never download anything).
peterstjohn··on A human review of the Kindle Fire
