petermcneeley··on France targets Australia-style social media ban for children next year
I mean the internet was a thing when I was 13. What is even your response to the fact that an entire generation has already gone through this?

The primary difference is that back then there was strong parental supervision and guidance.

petermcneeley··on France targets Australia-style social media ban for children next year
Oh now its AI slop lol. Anyway the fact is that no children should be left unattended on the internet.

There isnt much information here. What is the total power per m^2 and what is the frequency (range). As we know the sun alone is 1kW/m^2 over quite a range.
petermcneeley··on Efficient method to capture carbon dioxide from the atmosphere
Diffusion and convection would do all the work. You dont need to worry. You can see the stuff mix around https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-aSBfn6_pUY

petermcneeley··on Hybrid Aerial Underwater Drone – Bachelor Project [video]
As an undergrad project this is rather impressive. But those motors do not look very water resistant. We all know that that shape and those blades are not very efficient in the water. And as others mention the RF signal probably cuts out at a few meters (probably worse in salt water).

petermcneeley··on From Rockets to Heat Pumps
I appreciate the honesty (or at least appearance of so) but it is a bit of a shame to go from a 'rocket propulsion engineer' to a heat pump sales man.
petermcneeley··on Copper thieves are wreaking havoc across America
Laws on cars vary. It is common that cars can be sold for cash without any contract transfer. Same with guns but less so.

However are you saying that someone selling some extra scrap copper is in any way similar to someone selling their gun? These things are somehow equivalent?

However I will show you the actual connection. What you are doing is making the law abiding citizen be punish for the crimes of the criminal. This happens with fire-arms legislation as well.

The result tends to of course be that citizens lose rights while criminals do as they have before.

This is not a world I want to live in and I hope you would not want this either.

petermcneeley··on Copper thieves are wreaking havoc across America
How do I prove where I got my copper from? I can tell you why all of these things are bad ideas. They are bad ideas because you are outlawing legal commerce.

Copper has value. If people have this copper in their garage they can then get some value. The copper then goes back into the economy. Win Win. However if there is no gain to recycling it it might not quickly end up back into the economy. This is of course bad.

A totally radical view is to simply outlaw stealing :)

petermcneeley··on Copenhagenize Index 2025: The Global Ranking of Bicycle-Friendly Cities
Sounds very unpleasant. How do you get groceries? To me this is like having to fetch water from a well rather than using pipes.
petermcneeley··on Copper thieves are wreaking havoc across America
What is more of a crime. Stealing copper or buying copper that is of unknown origin.

I have pounds of copper wire in my garage. How should I sell it?

I love it when people have ideas. I just wish they would think about them more.

petermcneeley··on Zero knowlege proof of compositeness
A much smaller simpler example would have been useful for us mere mortals.

Ok 6 is not a prime. 5=b is not a multiple of 6

5^(6-1) = 3125 mod 6 = 5 which is not 1. Therefore 6 cannot be prime.

People dont live like this here. We would view this as hardship for peasants of another ancient time.

This is not to say it must be cars. It can be other forms of transit like bus/subway. Of course standing in an unsheltered area waiting for a bus is also highly undesirable. The windchill makes this literally dangerous.

Perhaps there is a cultural barrier here? or perhaps you are not familiar with real winter.

petermcneeley··on Copenhagenize Index 2025: The Global Ranking of Bicycle-Friendly Cities
I see bikes in the summer here. I dont see almost anybody biking in the winter here. Like 100:1. The winters here are not mild (like in vancouver). This is basically artic-like weather. People also tend not to walk. The very poor take the bus. Most drive.

'space to store them on a second set of wheels' This probably explains everything about this discussion. I think im dealing with very poor people (Europeans).

I think I have space in my pool shed or my other shed. Worst case I will put them in one of my many empty rooms.

Ah well that settles it then! Im going to tell the female lawyer I know to stop taking her car and instead buy gear and a bike so she can bike in the freezing cold for 20 minutes to get to her job where she also has to dress as a lawyer. No problem just pack a bag of clothes in a pack + all other workthings and then don artic style gear. So much fun!
petermcneeley··on Copenhagenize Index 2025: The Global Ranking of Bicycle-Friendly Cities
The alternative is not walking :)

In Vancouver this mostly works because it is cold but not cold enough. There are only a few days where it is very sketchy. The rest of Canada is not like this.
