peterjlee··on Samsung chief Lee arrested as S.Korean corruption probe deepens
She's also a daughter of the former president(dictator) who modernized South Korea. Her father was the main reason why people either voted or didn't vote for her. When she was elected it came as a shock to most liberal people just like when Trump won.
peterjlee··on Tesla Model S P100DL Motor Trend all-time world record 60mph in 2.27s
0-60 is just one index of a car. The hypercars usually focus more on the laptime on a track. As the article says, the Tesla is only quicker up to 60-70mph. On a track those cars will rarely go below 60mph. Also, weight is the most important factor to go around a corner fast and I'm guessing battery packs with a decent range is still too heavy for track purpose.
peterjlee··on Political Crisis Engulfs Samsung, a Firm Tied to South Korea’s Success
Many Koreans do believe that the President of Samsung is more powerful than the president. Though the current president of Samsung is relatively new since his father had an unexpected stroke in 2014. The succession of power wasn't complete at the time so they had to pull some legal/financial gymnastics with some "help" of the president to keep control.
peterjlee··on New NIST password guidelines: don't require character types or rotation
I'm not sure if accepting unicode characters is a good idea. It would make it more secure but you can very easily get locked out of your own account if you try to login from another device without the correct input method.

Here's one extreme example of it: "I included emoji in my password and now I can't log in to my Account on Yosemite"(https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=10742351)

peterjlee··on When oil is no longer in demand
Is the refining process flexible enough to do that? I was under the impression that refining is more of a separation process so the amount of each petroleum product you get is already determined by the petroleum you have before you even start the process.
peterjlee··on When oil is no longer in demand
I wonder what will happen to the price of jet fuel once electric cars are wide spread. Petroleum production will go down as demand for gasoline will go down while jet fuel demand will probably remain similar. So will that lead to a rise in jet fuel price?
peterjlee··on Fewer than 3% of cars sold in the U.S. have manual transmissions
I live in a urban city in the US and when I tried to learn how to drive a manual I couldn't find a way. Most of my friends can't drive a manual or even have a car and none of them own a manual. When I contacted a few local driving schools for manual lessons, they replied they don't have any manuals on their fleet but they'll teach me if I somehow bring my own. I might just move on and just settle for a DCT on my next car since knowing how to drive at all will become a lost art in a few decades.
peterjlee··on Adding a phone number to your Google account can make it less secure
Once I had my SIM card stuck in my phone. So when I wanted to use a different phone, I bought a new SIM card kit online and brought it to a T-mobile store. I told the clerk my SIM card is stuck in this phone so I want to transfer my number to the new SIM card. He asked for my phone number then scanned the new SIM card and transferred the number. I didn't have to provide any identity or proof that I actually own the number. It's scary how easy stealing someone's phone number can be.
peterjlee··on Google and Box Announce Partnership
There are companies that solve exactly that. Xendo and Synata are the two I know. They've both been acquired earlier this year.
peterjlee··on Samsung Stops Galaxy Note 7 Smartphone Shipments as Safety Suspicions Spread
Samsung just announced that they will replace all 2.5 million Note 7 sold so far.

peterjlee··on Google shelves plan for phone with interchangeable parts
First thing that came into mind when I heard about project Ara was that, laptops aren't modular because the increased size and weight will out weigh the benefits. Seemed like the same situation applies to smartphones, only worse.
peterjlee··on Changing the Culture of Python at Facebook [video]
Instagram uses django
peterjlee··on Text Summarization with TensorFlow
It'll be more remarkable if a machine can read a play script and summarize the plot.
peterjlee··on Interviewing my mother, a mainframe COBOL programmer
If you're interested in knowing how banking works between banks, Planet Money had a podcast on it few years ago. Apparently bankers met at a parking lot in New York and traded bags of paper checks back in the days.

peterjlee··on Pokemon Go is a huge security risk
Seem like a issue with Google Auth on iOS. I've logged into Pokemon Go from my Android and iPhone. I revoked the access of "Pokemon Go release" from Connected Apps page then logged in again from my Android phone. "Pokemon Go release" doesn't show up in my Connected Apps page anymore even after a login from Android.
peterjlee··on Mozilla could walk away from Yahoo deal and get more than $1B
Maybe with all that money they can buy DuckDuckGo and make it the default search engine? It's a risky move though. If DuckDuckGo doesn't workout, they lose the option of switching to another search partner.
peterjlee··on Volkswagen's U.S. diesel emissions settlement to cost $15B
Death penalty sort of happened for Tokyo Electric after the earthquake. Turns out Tokyo Electric had a chance to prevent the disaster but didn't and things got out of control. The company wasn't able to pay fines and the government couldn't simply shut down the company that supplied 30% of the nation's electricity. So all of the executives were fired and the company went under government control.
peterjlee··on Why “Uber for X” companies are struggling even as Uber thrives
Uber provides a better service at a lower price than it's alternative(taxi). Most Uber for X companies are just providing a delivery service at a higher price.
peterjlee··on How to Safely Store Your Users' Passwords in 2016
I forget my passwords all the time so clicking on 'forgot password" is already my primary way to login on many sites I don't use often.
peterjlee··on Can India modernize without relying heavily on coal?
Even in the United States, 39% of the electricity comes from coal. Coal power plants are one of the cheapest to build and India may not have the luxury to support their growth with cleaner power plants. https://www.eia.gov/tools/faqs/faq.cfm?id=427&t=3
peterjlee··on Is the new Zuckerberg fake charity an estate tax avoidance scheme?
I don't think Zuckerberg is trying to avoid estate tax but even if he is and if he's doing it legally, this is something we should complain to the Congress for writing bad tax code.
peterjlee··on Ask HN: What visa do foreign YC founders use to stay in US beyond 3 months?
I heard about a seed fund for foreign founders that will invest by hiring the founders and paying them salaries while sponsoring the founders' visa. So the salary is basically the seed fund. I can't remember their name so I'm not sure if they're still around or if it's even legal but I thought the idea was cool. Maybe YC can look into something like that?

EDIT: found it. https://angel.co/unshackled

peterjlee··on “One billion people used Facebook in a single day”
Congrats to Facebook! Instead of poking holes to that number or saying something negative, I'm just going to say Congrats.
peterjlee··on Google launches Uber rival RideWith
Considering 90% of my Uber usage is for commuting, this could take significant market away from Uber.
peterjlee··on Why Japanese Web Design Is So Different
I feel like the author wrote this article with a bias that Western websites are better and more aesthetically pleasing because it's simpler. But those are all subjective matters and Asian users probably prefer what they have. I come from a Korean background and I visit many different Korean and American websites daily, including the ones mentioned in the article. While some of the reasons given may seem plausible, non of them were actually convincing. There isn't really a solid reason why Asian websites look like that. That's just how it was and users are familiar with it. Some people like Hacker News because it's simple, while some people don't like it because it's too simple. There's no better or worse, it's just a preference.

Also, those patterns are not unique to Asian websites. If you go to cnn.com or msn.com, they're not that different either.
