peterjlee··on Shopping for a Home in the Bay Area? Head to the Mall
There are more extreme versions of these all over Seoul. Usually there's a 5-story mall with grocery store, clinics, super market, etc. Then on top of that there's a 30-story apartment building with some outdoor grass area. You basically don't have to leave the building if you live there.
peterjlee··on Trends to Avoid When Founding a Startup
I think VC-funded hypergrowth raise your company's chance of failure. However, it also raises the chance of a big exit. Hence, high risk, high return. VCs are in the business of investing in high risk, high return companies. So it's natural they want their portfolio companies to optimize for high return than survival. If any one of the VC's 50 portfolio company makes a big exit, the VC profits.

For founders and employees, you can't work for 50 different high risk, high return companies at the same time, so that might not be what they want.

peterjlee··on Stanford paper says rent control is driving up cost of housing in San Francisco
Rent control is only available in units built before 1980. So renters who were not lucky enough to find a rent controlled housing has an incentive to vote against rent control. Though, any politician who leans one way or the other will piss off the other group and could be a political suicide.
peterjlee··on I got locked out of my Google account for a month
What's the alternative though? It's not like Microsoft and Yahoo's email/calendar services are much better. Use a paper calendar and run your own private email server and hope you never have to run for president?
peterjlee··on Bitcoin Cash deals frozen as insider trading is probed
I think of cryptocurrency as a wild wild west of high risk investing (aka gambling). Companies like Coinbase is in the business of selling you wagons and oxen so you can participate if you wish. I think the real problem is that this became a gold rush, so too many people who don't know what they're doing are participating.
peterjlee··on SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy rocket sets up at Cape Canaveral ahead of launch
I got curious how it compares to Saturn V.

Low Earth Orbit Payload: Falcon Heavy: 140,000lb, Saturn V: 260,000lb

Launch cost: Falcon Heavy: ~$140M, Saturn V: $185M ($1B+ in 2016 dollars)

It blows my mind how crazy Saturn V was and it was 50 years ago.

peterjlee··on Magic Leap One
Have you tried Samsung Gear VR with Galaxy S8? S8 has the latest and greatest mobile display with one of the highest pixel density in the market. However, when I use it in a VR headset, I can still see the pixels. It may be good enough for some gaming but it's not usable for working with spreadsheets in VR.
peterjlee··on Facebook Will Introduce Ads as Videos Start, a Move Long Resisted
So are they gonna introduce Facebook Pro for $9.99/mo? I gave up and just pay for YouTube now. I rarely watch videos on Facebook though.
peterjlee··on Thor Electric Truck Will Probably Beat Tesla’s to Market
Software is relatively easy to scale. Manufacturing small electronic devices can also be scaled by outsourcing to factories in China (even Apple does it). Scaling automotive production seems a lot harder. There aren't a lot of car factories out there waiting for some car company to make an order. Building your own factory can take billions of dollars and years to complete. Even Tesla is struggling with scaling production.
peterjlee··on Ed Lee, 65, SF mayor who had a close relationship with the tech world, has died
The US male average life expectancy is around 77. That includes early deaths of low income people with poor access to health care, very obese people, teenage drivers. In fact an average US male who reaches the age of 65 is likely to live until 84.3 (1). 65 seems like an early age to die for someone with a social/financial status of a major city mayor.

peterjlee··on Apple is close to acquiring Shazam, sources say
I was looking for a way to see the lyrics of a song on Spotify. The official Spotify help page recommended using SoundHound instead for lyrics. SoundHound can listen to the music and show you the lyrics in real time line by line. That was pretty cool. I wonder how Shazam and SoundHound differ and how they make money.
peterjlee··on Fewer toys at once may help toddlers to focus better and play more creatively
Trying to build what I wanted with the limited Lego parts I had always forced me to be more creative.
peterjlee··on After 37 years, Voyager has fired up its trajectory thrusters
With orders of magnitude less processing power. Government projects just cost more..

I can see a Gravity Gate happening when Andromeda Patriots tweak the Earth gravity simulator of their home stadium to gain an advantage.
peterjlee··on Waymo Will Test Self-Driving Cars in Snowy Detroit
As a human driver in California, I honestly don't know how to drive in the snow.
peterjlee··on White House Looks at Replacing Social Security Numbers
This is basically what's happening in S.Korea. Instead of investing more in security, banks are offloading the duty to the consumers. They issue a private key and ask for three different layers of password/pins nobody ever remembers. If you (or the bank) ever get hacked, well, you can't prove that it wasn't you "so too bad" is basically what happens.
peterjlee··on White House Looks at Replacing Social Security Numbers
Federal government buys Twitter and makes your twitter handle your national identifier. I'm sure Trump is fine with that.
peterjlee··on White House wants to end Social Security numbers as a national ID
The reason SSN became a form of ID in the first place was because it's the only way to track a person across all states. If I get a loan in California, then move to Arizona and apply for another loan from another bank, the new bank should still be able to know about my loan in California. SSN was just too convenient for that purpose and banks stuck with it even though it wasn't designed for it.
peterjlee··on Better Database Migrations in Postgres
I use Sequelize. I write migrations in Javascript using Promise chains. It does take some trial and error to figure out how to add join columns or create the join table so Sequelize knows how to work with it.
peterjlee··on Washington Post integrates Talk – Mozilla’s open-source commenting platform
I think to have good comments, you need to build a good community. I sometimes see the same article shared across HN, Reddit and Facebook. Some sites have better comments than others..
peterjlee··on A camera that snaps a GIF and ejects a cartridge that displays it
I think wizards call this a normal camera.
peterjlee··on I’m Peter Roberts, immigration attorney who does work for YC and startups. AMA
Hi Peter, what effects do you think Trump's new policies on immigration will have on OPT/H1B engineers in Silicon Valley tech companies? My friends freaked out when he was first elected but so far they're saying not bad as they thought.
peterjlee··on How ACH works: A developer perspective (2014)
Here's a good NPR Planet Money episode on how transferring money works.

http://www.npr.org/sections/money/2013/10/04/229224964/episo...

Apparently, back in the days before ACH, banks met up at a parking lot in NYC every night and literally exchanged bags of paper checks.

There was a proposal build something better than ACH, but it was denied because the cost to upgrade the infrastructure would cost too much for small banks and credit unions.

peterjlee··on Android Oreo
When Kitkat came out, they decided it was mutually beneficial and didn't pay each other.
peterjlee··on A 2:15 Alarm, 2 Trains and a Bus Get Her to Work by 7 A.M
Mostly existing homeowners. More houses mean decrease in their rent income. Also the influential people in city politics probably already own homes.
peterjlee··on A 2:15 Alarm, 2 Trains and a Bus Get Her to Work by 7 A.M
>Ms. James pays $1,000 a month in rent for her three-bedroom house, compared with $1,600 for the one-bedroom apartment she had in Alameda.

She was forced out of her original apartment but unless she had a new situation that required her to have more bedrooms with a lower budget, some part of this extremity was her choice. I think NYT should've chosen a better example if the point they were trying to get across is "tech boom forcing workers out".

peterjlee··on Spotify preps to go public with 60M subscribers
I was using Spotify then jumped ship to Youtube Red and used Google Music for about a year. But their music curation wasn't good so I jumped back to Spotify. Then I got tired of watching Youtube ads so now I just pay for both...

peterjlee··on California’s Housing Crisis Reaches a ‘Breaking Point’
My guess is that voters who actually care about city level politics or influential people in the city are already home owners. For home owners, building more housing means a decrease in their home value so they have no incentive to push more housing.
