petepete··on Don't Download Apps
They've gone an admirably long way to fuck up a text input.
petepete··on Show HN: Stun LLMs with thousands of invisible Unicode characters
Probably going to give screen readers a hard time.
petepete··on Streaming platform Twitch added to Australia's teen social media ban
Steam straddles the line between gaming and social too.
petepete··on Ubiquiti Flex Mini 2.5G Review Ubiquiti Does a Cheap 5-Port 2.5GbE Switch
Similarly I've had a 1GbE one installed in my loft for the last 3 years with 4×G5 Bullets plugged into it.

No problems, no fuss, mounting options are great - would recommend that approach to anyone installing cameras.

petepete··on Unofficial Microsoft Teams client for Linux
Same for me, it works and allows me to do what I need to do. It does it neither gracefully or efficiently, but I think that's down to it trying to be everything at once, and the UI suffers as a result.

The main thing that trips me up is that I often confuse my Outlook calendar for me Teams calendar - because they look almost the same but work completely differently.

petepete··on Steam Machine
By _embracing_ the WinAPI!
petepete··on I hate screenshots of text
The main reason the argument doesn't stand up is that some people use screen readers.

Unless you know the person/people you're sending something to can read screenshots, it's only right to at least accompany them with the text.

petepete··on The lazy Git UI you didn't know you need
Me too, it’s been my tool of choice for staging hunks for more than 15 years now.
petepete··on How the UK lost its shipbuilding industry
Hopefully the Russians don't try and destroy the fishermen of Hull again.

petepete··on Btop: A better modern alternative of htop with a gamified interface
Just press z in top for glorious colour.
petepete··on Btop: A better modern alternative of htop with a gamified interface
I like btop but as someone who keeps their config files under source control it's a bit annoying that anything you do in the application results in config file changes.
petepete··on YouTube Removes Windows 11 Bypass Tutorials, Claims 'Risk of Physical Harm'
I'd recommend Fedora KDE, it's vanilla and well used enough to be able to easily find answers.

Ubuntu based distros are fine too, but there are a few weird things to get to grips with like Snaps.

There's really not much difference between most distros these days so I'm sure if you like one you'd like the other.

petepete··on ICC ditches Microsoft 365 for openDesk
I can't see any links to repos on the website, is it actually open?

petepete··on IKEA launches new smart home range with 21 Matter-compatible products
I use an IKEA Dirigera, which speaks both Zigbee and Matter.

While close to SC2000, it's much closer to Transport Tycoon (OpenTTD).

petepete··on Free software scares normal people
Constrict fits into that niche nicely.

petepete··on Samsung makes ads on smart fridges official with upcoming software update
With the $15.00 per month Pro Chef subscription you can enable the freezer compartment.
petepete··on Ubiquiti SFP Wizard
This is exactly how it is for me too. Everything truly "just worked" - except Sonos, but that's not a Unifi problem - they even have a dedicated page in their docs on how to set up Sonos systems, which I followed exactly, and it now works a treat.
petepete··on Google flags Immich sites as dangerous
I write a couple of libraries for creating GOV.UK services and Google has flagged one of them as dangerous. I've appealed the decision several times but it's like screaming into a void.

https://govuk-components.netlify.app/

I use Google Workspace for my company email, so that's the only way for me to get in contact with a human, but they refuse to go off script and won't help me contact the actual department responsible in any way.

It's now on a proper domain, https://govuk-components.x-govuk.org/ - but other than moving, there's still not much anyone can do if they're incorrectly targeted.

petepete··on More random home lab things I've recently learned
There’s a blurred line between self-hosting and homelabbing.

I’d classify myself in the former camp, with a small server that runs TrueNAS and serves media, runs VMs and a few apps I use for work - and a Unifi network for my home and security cameras and VPN.

I’m positive there are people with very similar setups who call it a homelab. I don’t really experiment with mine, it’s set up and works in the background for months on end.

petepete··on How I'm using Helix editor
Undotree functionality was recently merged in too.
petepete··on Google Safe Browsing incident
My site, a library for building services with the GOV.UK Design System, is currently blocked too.

Despite being a paying Google Workspace customer, I can't get in touch with anyone who can help.

petepete··on Bose SoundTouch Support Discontinued
The key bit of the press release:

> After February 18, certain features — including access to integrated music services like Spotify and TuneIn, as well as multi-room playback — will no longer be available. However, if your SoundTouch product supports Bluetooth®, AUX, or HDMI, you’ll still be able to enjoy high-quality audio playback from connected devices.

petepete··on Git, JSON and Markdown walk into bar
Trailing commas is the source of 95% of my SQL syntax errors. I know I _could_ put them at the start of the line, but it's unintuitive.
petepete··on IKEA Catalogs 1951-2021
> they are genuinely worse in terms of construction

A 406 costs ×20 more (£1600 vs £80).

Does the 406 have cleaner lines? Yes.

Is it comfier? The 406 doesn't have a cushioned seat so, maybe or maybe not.

Will it last longer? Probably. But the IKEA one comes with a 10 year warranty and unless you treat it badly it'll probably last far longer than that.

Hard to argue that the IKEA POÄNG isn't great value for the people who have other priorities.

petepete··on Show HN: Timelinize – Privately organize your own data from everywhere, locally
Scribe? As in the person who writes the timeline.
petepete··on Bat: Cat with syntax highlighting
It's clearly a joke in the vein of being able to recreate Dropbox with an FTP account, curlftpfs, and SVN/CVS.
petepete··on Google Workspace Updates: Send Gmail end-to-end encrypted emails to anyone
Well they did go to the trouble of using the date April 1st in the gif!
petepete··on Blockdiff: We built our own file format for VM disk snapshots
I love this, and the post made a complex topic easy to follow for a mere mortal like me. Including images of tables with no alt text is a bit of a barrier though, especially when the company is called Cognition.
petepete··on The Other Linux Logo
My first thought was a Russian doll.
