petemir··on Google-hosted malvertising leads to fake Keepass site that looks genuine
A tip I saw here a couple of weeks ago that restored some quality to searches was to, after searching, open the drop-down menu from “Tools”, select “all results” and then “verbatim”.

I do all of my searches in incognito so sadly I don’t know if the options is remembered or not.

petemir··on Vitalik Buterin Has Invested 400 ETH into SimulaVR
I was on the same boat and did not buy one either. As they seemed to have hit some funding issues (even with Vitalik's investment), maybe it was a self fulfilling prophecy...
petemir··on OpenEarable: A new, open-source, Arduino-based platform for ear-based sensing
Yes. There is research dealing e.g. with ear canal-based authentication. Other earables (Omnibuds by Nokia Bell Labs http://omnibuds.tech/) use the inward-facing microphone to detect the sound of the heartbeat. With this (plus a PPG sensor) they can estimate blood pressure (after calibration).
petemir··on OpenEarable: A new, open-source, Arduino-based platform for ear-based sensing
I guess that’s because hearing aids is a restricting term and these are more versatile. Furthermore, probably calling them “hearing aid” would lead to costly clinical regulation that they cannot afford as an open-source research device.
petemir··on OpenEarable: A new, open-source, Arduino-based platform for ear-based sensing
Sorry, as I worked in research with these I assumed they were well-known terms, but some info: https://www.esense.io/

http://omnibuds.tech/ (Both from Nokia Bell Labs)

And a literature review from the designer of the OpenEarables: https://dl.acm.org/doi/abs/10.1145/3550314

petemir··on Daily energy expenditure through the human life course
Well, now I have an excuse for when people asks me to stand still. "Sorry, I cannot, I'm burning calories".
petemir··on Show HN: Firefox add-on to open YouTube videos in alternative front ends
They keep working with a workaround, by using guest tokens handed out to the Android application. So, until they change the functioning of the app, it will keep working.
petemir··on I helped select the Nobel laureates in physics
This has to be one of the most joyful videos ever: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=co-WM5kOdaU
petemir··on Impacts of lack of sleep
Another anecdote, but I remember someone here commenting that after several days without sleep he got his amygdala (maybe?) physically damaged and that permanently f-ed up his sleep schedule.

As a terminal procrastinator who frequently pulls all-nighters (this year I even got to two in 3 days) I was terrified (and apparently decided to never comply with any deadline anymore, but that's another story).

petemir··on The ozone hole above Antarctica has grown to three times the size of Brazil
> And if you know anything about statistics, its that ancedotes are not the plural of data and that humans have a severe recency bias.

> The facts about climate change are damning enough, i don't know why people feel the need to resort to poor logic and fallacies when describing climate change. The truth is actually on your side. Lets present that instead

I don’t think that the majority of people deals well when confronted with statistics.

petemir··on "You have a 27% 'AI' issue in here"
Furthermore oral examinations do not scale. We had to do them during covid times and it was gruesome, spending full days in meetings and losing a full week with only 70-80 students.
petemir··on Plants can detect sound
Surely this study has been funded by the meat industry.
petemir··on I got paid to live in Antarctica
At least in bases from other countries (i.e., speaking from personal experience), a majority of the personnel, at least during the winter, would come from the military. In those specific countries too, at least, military personnel did not correlate with (well)educated people, so sexism was also common.
petemir··on Apple finally put USB-C in new iPhone, but limited to 23-year-old USB 2.0 speeds
The similarities between both devices are probably the reason Apple stopped officially selling the 14 Pro.
petemir··on iPhone 12 withdrawn from French market for non-compliance with EU regulation
> From apple’s perspective today sounds like a great day to pull the 12 because people would just assume it’s not available any more now that the 15 is out.

It's even better because it's not available anymore exactly because of that reason :). You cannot get it in any (online) Apple Store, be it French or not.

petemir··on Rare Otis Pop-Out Elevators (2016) [video]
I was doing a 4-month internship a few years ago and was looking to remotely rent an apartment, which is the ideal opportunity to be scammed. As I was searching info about a possible unit, I found a YouTube video of someone showing the building's elevator. The video even had a dedication in the description. I was also surprised about this, so I entered this guy's ytb channel and it was filled with videos of other buildings' elevators in that and neighboring cities.

That's how I discovered this community. It's always amusing to find out new niches some group of people care about, you can find the most amazing (and unexpected) things.

> Maybe Mega? That way it's more clear what's next.

But we would have to start with kilo first.

petemir··on Ice core scientists in East Greenland reach bedrock
Part of the problem, which you fail to address, is the time frame when these changes take place and the possibility of the ecosystem to adapt. Yes, we've been much cooler and much warmer, with these changes taking place over thousand of years: not a couple of centuries.

petemir··on The open source learning curve for AI researchers
lol, this hits close to home. As a PhD student with several years of past experience in Dev work, I have become the main reference point of the lab to deal with this stuff. Just now I have spent 2 days debugging a Dockerfile shared in a repository published in a paper to build the environment to run the experiments.

One interesting thing about this is that since the moment the experiments have been done, and the paper is actually published, you are probably several (even major!) versions behind on every possible software. If the shared information does not take this into account (i.e., versions are not fixed when trying to create reproducible environments), you're in for some painful debugging :).

petemir··on Microsoft lost its keys, and the government got hacked
One anecdote I have about Microsoft is that I once set up in Hotmail my birthday 5 months in advance to what it was, probably to bypass some 18yo check. Eventually (5 months later, probably) I set it back to normal.

Since then, for a couple of years, my father got a notification saying that it was my birthday (and he even obliged to congratulate me, once; he was -- and luckily is -- old :) ). That setting was not available anymore anywhere, and my birthday was set to the correct date, but the problem still happened. I contacted Microsoft, but it was like they had no idea what I was talking about nor what could be the problem.

So yeah, I don't trust them nor like them either.
