petee··on Bring Back Idiomatic Design
My health provider recently changed their homepage UI to have a human 'profile' icon to mean "register", a lock icon to sign-in, and 'box-arrow-in-right" to logout. No tooltips
petee··on The Physics of GPS
Maybe i missed it, but the first step kinda skips over how the inital time is calculated - the cell can't know when the signal was transmitted without some prior time or location knowledge?
petee··on OCR for construction documents does not work, we fixed it
Construction, coding is a hobby from before I realized a desk wasn't for me. Sadily we are always under NDAs, so using a tool like this would require a lot of hoop jumping unless it definitely didn't cache or anything
petee··on OCR for construction documents does not work, we fixed it
Oh nice! I spend a good amount of time eyeballing drawings for overlooked details, so even finding most is a handy tool to me as my brain can skip the marked areas
petee··on OCR for construction documents does not work, we fixed it
I ran the example doors given and it missed 9 swinging doors, some that were in double swing pairs, and a few that were just out on their own not clustered. Not bad overall though
petee··on You can run a DNS server (2025)
If you're a masochist you can do it manually, just make sure you have a good grasp of whats going on first[1]

Simplistically you need a DS record at your registrar, then sign your zones before publishing. You can cheat and make the KSK not expire, which saves some aggravation. I've rolled my own by hand for 10 yrs with no dnssec related downtime

petee··on Fujifilm X RAW STUDIO webapp clone
Great to see more Fuji X attention, their native software isn't great. Looking forward to trying it out with my older X-T20, which appears supported[1] surprisingly

I was about to mention the Fudge[2] app and its underlying library, but its already listed as a reference, nice!

petee··on France's aircraft carrier located in real time by Le Monde through fitness app
I'd guess it also risks exposing a specific account as a crew member, making them trackable back on shore; particularly if you're uploading the same routes
petee··on Store birth date in systemd for age verification
I had to check the date; is not April yet
petee··on Put the zip code first
Some areas have duplicate, or very similar street names (ie, 'ave' vs. 'street') I don't think its that much of an ask that a website lets you enter your address correctly
petee··on Put the zip code first
My zip covers two cities, each has a similar street name; 5-digits isn't enough.

I've encountered websites that take the zip and won't let me change the wrongly-assumed city

petee··on Astra: An open-source observatory control software
How do you feel about Alpaca in actual use? I've been skeptical about controlling something expensive with a REST api, not that I have anything to back up that feeling, but it always raised my eyebrow
petee··on Astra: An open-source observatory control software
In my bortle 8 city, I have been able to get some decent images of the Eastern Veil Nebula with an Optolong L-Pro pollution filter, Zenithstar 73, and about ~2hrs total exposure (color)

Just for poking around, SharpCap has a live stacking mode which helps finding the darker stuff

petee··on Astra: An open-source observatory control software
It is unfortunate that frameworks and the like, love to choose completely unrelated names. It certainly makes it tough to navigate the landscape when names mean absolutely nothing
petee··on Don't use passkeys for encrypting user data
This past weekend I watched as my mom discovered the password manager in Chrome, and started deleting every entry she couldn't immediately recognize. "Why is this here? I don't need this"

Despite me pleading that they got there for a reason, and takes zero storage, she was confident she didn't need these passwords. So I can totally see her deleting passkeys; my mom is basically Erica, there need to be very explicit implications stated for every action presented and not assume innate understanding

petee··on OpenAI agrees with Dept. of War to deploy models in their classified network
This explains the "Free Codex" offer i just got in my email
petee··on Windows 11 Notepad to support Markdown
You're not wrong, and I could have elaborated. While loaded with stuff, I find the ui can be pared down, and has a similar load time and screen space as notepad.

The subscription isn't awesome, but it works fine without it, and doesn't pester alot

petee··on Windows 11 Notepad to support Markdown
I found when I did that I lost the ability to associate any program with .txt files; like popup errors when trying to assign a default

You can make old Notepad be the default cmd line by going to Apps > Advanced app settings > App execution aliases, and disable the Notepad setting

petee··on Windows 11 Notepad to support Markdown
I like EmEditor, it has a compact ui and some useful features, and 16TB file support -- https://www.emeditor.com/
petee··on Facebook's Fascination with My Robots.txt
Do crawlers follow/cache 301 permanent redirects? I wonder if you could point the firehouse back at facebook, but it would mean they wouldn't get your robots.txt anymore (though I'd just blackhole that whole subnet anyway)
petee··on Windows Notepad App Remote Code Execution Vulnerability
I can successfully set that as admin, but it doesn't change anything - file won't open and "open with" pops up an error still that notepad can't be used.

Edit: going with EmEditor; forgot that existed

petee··on Windows Notepad App Remote Code Execution Vulnerability
Works great still, but now windows won't let me associate .txt files with it. God damn I hate the future
petee··on PCs refuse to shut down after Microsoft patch
I have a bluetooth mouse that will wake my desktop, untouched; I physically switch it off when I'm away from home
petee··on Hardware Touch, Stronger SSH
One issue i see is that it's a sealed package; it wouldn't be immediately apparent if someone added extra hardware/functionality.

More likely though I'd expect you'd just get some form of a clone device

petee··on How I protect my Forgejo instance from AI web crawlers
You can also add a honeypot urls to your robots.txt to trap bots that are using it as an index
petee··on A Developer Accidentally Found CSAM in AI Data. Google Banned Him for It

petee··on Google confirms Android attacks; no fix for most Samsung users
The point was the whole phone has been vulnerable to a multitude of RCEs for five years, so it doesn't really matter if its the latest exploit, its a silly request.
petee··on Google confirms Android attacks; no fix for most Samsung users
Pixel 2 stopped getting updates almost 5 years ago
petee··on The "Mad Men" in 4K on HBO Max Debacle
The first season or two you can definitely see the crew in the safety margins, sometimes the camera crane too
