pesus··on Maine is about to become the first state to ban major new data centers
Your profile indicates you're head of engineering at an AI startup. Can you provide a reason why someone who isn't financially motivated by their stake in an AI company should support new data center development for AI? Especially someone who lives in the area and will be disproportionately negatively affected by the construction and operation?
pesus··on US cities are axing Flock Safety surveillance technology
It's more "sus" that you blindly trust the police, politicians, and billionaires that have a history of discrimination, violence, and oppression and attempt to slander those who don't. Not to mention blindly trusting AI systems with someone's life - the only reason one would do that is because they either stand to profit from it or don't understand how they work. Are you really willing and eager to put your life in the hands of a piece of software that can't distinguish a gun and a Doritos bag?

Remember, oppression and invasion of privacy is still bad even if it isn't currently happening to you. If you think you can't be a target, you're sorely mistaken.

pesus··on US cities are axing Flock Safety surveillance technology
If the drones are "providing information" to the police, it's only a matter of time before their AI hallucinates something that gets someone killed. We've already seen AI gun detection services that report things like Doritos bags as guns.
pesus··on A whole civilization might die tonight
You're not alone. I keep hoping there's some sort of fire to put out at work so I can at least be distracted enough for a bit.
pesus··on Sam Altman may control our future – can he be trusted?
> considering you just made a sweeping negative generalization based on race without recognizing it for what it is.

I did no such thing. I'd suggest reading more carefully. Much of that background describes me as well.

> Also, I find it interesting how your list of "backgrounds that define bad people" conveniently omits a specific trait that many tech CEOs of questionable morals share, likely because it doesn't align with your agenda.

Can you elaborate instead of beating around the bush? What exactly do you think "my agenda" is? What "specific trait" are you referring to?

pesus··on Sam Altman may control our future – can he be trusted?
I never claimed that. I am one myself. I'd suggest reading more carefully in the future.
pesus··on Sam Altman may control our future – can he be trusted?
Thank you for sharing this. I 100% believe it, and it lines up with my experience with other people who came from similar backgrounds as Sam Altman - i.e. white, rich, privileged, and attending elite universities.

I will disagree with one part - I do believe it is racism. Most will never admit it publicly, but if they think you're one of them, it often comes out rather quickly, especially when alcohol is involved.

pesus··on More Americans are breaking into the upper middle class
It's the norm now, depressingly. Prior to 2020, It seemed like it might be eventually possible for some of us if we make smart decisions in terms of careers, saving money, and everything else.

Post 2020, and now especially with the economy being propped up by AI that appears to be on the verge of killing (or at least significantly wounding) one of the last viable career paths that would allow for homeownership, I've accepted that it probably just won't happen. Same with having children. Somehow having both feels like a pipe dream.

It's also why I'm not shocked that a significant number of startups lately are just young people doing whatever they can to grab some wealth before things get even worse. Overall, there's an expectation that things will simply keep getting worse with little chance of turning around. It'll be interesting (in a morbid way) to see how this affects the kids currently growing up today.

pesus··on Sweden goes back to basics, swapping screens for books in the classroom
Are these supposed to be the "skilled" prompts? This just reads as a basic conversation and not as particularly well-written or well-defined prompts. So far everything I've seen about prompting "skills" has just come down to being able to articulate and critically think a bit.
pesus··on OkCupid gave 3M dating-app photos to facial recognition firm, FTC says
Even if they were initially trustworthy, it's surely only a matter of time before they start wanting/needing to make (more) money and start abandoning their principles in pursuit of profit.
pesus··on Copilot edited an ad into my PR
Why such strong opposition to getting user consent before doing any of this? Not respecting consent seems to be a very common theme with MS these days, and it really doesn't reflect well on the company or you personally.
pesus··on If you don't opt out by Apr 24 GitHub will train on your private repos
Why not get user consent first?
pesus··on AI got the blame for the Iran school bombing. The truth is more worrying
Most of our politicians seem to think it is, so maybe it was a Freudian slip.
pesus··on Goodbye to Sora
Vocaloids are hardly similar to fully AI-generated songs. Vocaloids are still human controlled.
pesus··on Is anybody else bored of talking about AI?
I'm convinced that the majority of people hyping up AI don't actually interact with many people in real life, let alone people that aren't software engineers.
pesus··on Epic Games to cut more than 1k jobs as Fortnite usage falls
They're also paying out hundreds of millions to map "creators", the majority of which are pumping out low effort game modes like Steal The Brainrot. I can't help but feel this isn't helping their situation at all. Then again, Steal The Brainrot often surpasses the actual Fortnite game modes in player count, so maybe it is worth it. It doesn't seem like a sign of good health for Fortnite overall, though.
pesus··on Box of Secrets: Discreetly modding an apartment intercom to work with Apple Home
There has always been ethical and unethical hacking (and shades of gray in between).
pesus··on So where are all the AI apps?
In this case, it's more like asking your friends to take time to smell some feces instead of flowers.

Or to be a little less pessimistic, it's like asking them to stop and smell the flowers, except the flowers are fake and plastic and it makes your friends question your sanity. Either way, it's not a normal or enjoyable flower smelling experience, and doesn't add any enjoyment or simple pleasure to one's life like normal flower smelling would.

pesus··on Chuck Norris has died
He forgot to actually curl it. Like someone else said, the weights are almost certainly not actually 500lbs. Even elite bodybuilders and strongmen in their prime don't come close to curling 500lbs, let alone an old man.

Looking at the video, if it was legitimate, it would be 585lbs (6 45lb plates on each side plus a 45lb bar), which is even less believable.

pesus··on Afroman found not liable in defamation case
Realistically, it's more to protect from unhinged supporters of the current regime than the regime itself.
pesus··on Illinois Introducing Operating System Account Age Bill
There are probably many more people that would profit off of it on HN.
pesus··on Ask HN: Please restrict new accounts from posting
If you're going to spend 3 hours making a post, why not just write it yourself in the first place and avoid the issue and the reputational damage?
pesus··on An interactive map of Flock Cams
The amount of times I've seen cops just sitting in their cars playing on their phones or loitering around chatting and ignoring everything around them is ridiculously high.

pesus··on Statement on the comments from Secretary of War Pete Hegseth
If I had to guess as a lifelong California resident, I'd say the salary discrepancy is probably the biggest factor. I'd also guess the weather and lack of available jobs would be the next biggest factors, not necessarily in that order.
pesus··on OpenAI, the US government and Persona built an identity surveillance machine
It's safe to assume any publicly accessible website is one of them or will be in the near future.
pesus··on Americans are destroying Flock surveillance cameras
Why not? Don't you want to stop all the crimes happening in bathrooms too? That would be a logical step if privacy is always an acceptable tradeoff for security (or at least the illusion thereof).
pesus··on We're no longer attracting top talent: the brain drain killing American science

pesus··on We're no longer attracting top talent: the brain drain killing American science
Why do you feel scientists deserve to be punished for being against a political regime that is anti-science?
pesus··on 99% of adults over 40 have shoulder "abnormalities" on an MRI, study finds
They'd probably have to specifically focus on mobility and flexibility as well. You really need both of those in conjunction with enough strength.
