perryh2··on Tesla details how it’ll charge new owners to use Superchargers
Not sure why this isn't possible. I learned this the hard way last time I spent 8 hours driving to LA from the bay area during the holiday season. If I was in a hurry on holiday to get to socal I'd much prefer driving a regular car with gas. The capacity at each charging station is visible from the map though.
perryh2··on Tesla details how it’ll charge new owners to use Superchargers
The charging rate is very low when there are many Teslas charging at a station so sometimes it could take 3-4x longer than usual when at a busy location. I'd expect to be charged the same amount in those cases.
perryh2··on Raspberry Pi releases an OS to breathe new life into old PCs
I bought a T420 from Ebay as well for around $180. Everything works well but the screen on my sucked. Did you replace yours?
perryh2··on Software Engineering Internship Amazon Interview Experience
Some people don't have the privilege of working anywhere other than big companies. They're completely fine at big companies and can overlook seemingly terrible culture because they can get immigration visas and green cards. Most startups and medium-sized software companies don't even consider applicants that aren't American. I don't have an American last name and the first question many recruiters ask me is about my citizenship.
perryh2··on 8M GitHub profiles were leaked from GeekedIn's MongoDB
If you haven't already, change the email to some "noreply" address in the commits you author and add that to your GitHub profile so they can be attributed to you. I've built a similar scraper for recruiters as a source for talent leads when I used to work at a big company.
perryh2··on Mega Commuters in the U.S. [pdf]
I'm in the same train right now (literally as I type this) and have been commuting from Santa Clara to SF everyday. This takes me 2hrs 40mins combined of just being inside the train and another 20-30 mins of getting to the train station each day. Being in a train is not that bad as long as I'm preoccupied with my laptop, but I now have to sleep and wake up 2 hours earlier.
perryh2··on Postmates Secures $141M in a ‘Super, Super Difficult’ Fundraising Effort
It only happens to 1/5 of us 1/3 of the time. :) Plus Postmates at least reimburses us for the missing items.
perryh2··on Postmates Secures $141M in a ‘Super, Super Difficult’ Fundraising Effort
My team of ~5 people orders from Postmates every weekday for lunch and our order is missing items about a third of the time. It's not uncommon for one of us to reorder via Caviar's Fastbite service, where the food is on-hand and delivered within 5 mins in SoMa. When we tried Caviar's non-Fastbite service, we noticed the same problem with missing items. Does this happen to anyone else? We've been having this problem for months and I'd think that one of these companies have got it figured out by now.

perryh2··on Ask HN: What are the best personal project websites you've seen?
Jeremy Kun's blog, Math ∩ Programming: https://jeremykun.com/

He is _super_ smart and his posts often sneak into the homepage here.

perryh2··on The Alexa Prize
It'd be cool if someone built a bot that would help you practice another language. I spent years learning Spanish but don't have a partner to speak to in the language.
perryh2··on Open-Sourcing Yahoo's Pulsar, Pub-Sub Messaging at Scale
I worked at Yahoo but have never heard of "Pulsar" before. Was this known as "CMS" internally?
perryh2··on Can Tech Tools Make Apartment-Hunting in New York Affordable?
Flip Lease is actively spamming or paying people to spam Craigslist posters via email to use their product. I think this is a really bad form of growth-hacking. The emails aren't even nice to read.

perryh2··on A look behind the scenes at an index fund with Vanguard's Gerry O'Reilly
After some research in personal finance last week, I moved my balance from Wealthfront to Vanguard mutual funds/ETFs. I was already using them for my 401k. Their expense ratios are the lowest in the industry and they also have managed retirement funds you can use to replace Wealthfront if you are lazy. Here is a quick way to learn about the Bogleheads investment philosophy.

perryh2··on Microsoft Readies Azure GPUs
The GPUs that hosting providers are buying need to support vGPU features, which are only support by the higher-end workstation and server products.
perryh2··on Ask HN: What real-world apps are based on less popular disciplines of CS?
There are CV scientists building some very fun and interesting things at even Snapchat. :)
perryh2··on Google pays $250M for Sunnyvale offices where 3,000 could work
You can easily rent a bedroom in an older house or multi-room apartment for around $1000-1200 in Palo Alto, Mountain View, and Sunnyvale though. A few of my coworkers do this.
perryh2··on Swedes uncover Disqus user security breach
This is from 2013. Please mention this in the title.
perryh2··on “Super Engine” may fundamentally change the way internal combustion engines work
I share this opinion with you and do the best that I can to do my share. I have a normal car with a combustion engine that I've converted to use E85/Flexfuel, which is becoming more available in the US and many other parts of the world.
perryh2··on Nimble – A Wolfram Alpha Menubar Client for Mac OS X
I'm installing this. On a tangent, I wonder when we'll get Siri on OS X.
perryh2··on Ask HN: What sucks in the project management software you use?
I wish that GitHub offered some sort of project management as part of their Enterprise product. We use JIRA and GH Enterprise and the experience feels disconnected.
perryh2··on Top fantasy sports player uses software, analytics to reap millions
Your sample size is too small and I don't think you put in enough effort into your algorithm. Projections can be used as the base of your own calculations but you need to do more. Look at other things like matchups and player matchups, and look out for value picks.

Based on my own experience, I've seen some absolute monsters enter with $10K and come home with $200K+ in a single weekend. These players create hundreds of different lineups each week and enter them in the big contests.

perryh2··on The 99% (of startups)
For those that don't know, Justin's new app The Drop is pretty cool. It's like reddit for EDM. https://thedrop.club
perryh2··on Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer Faces Morale Challenge
Each property has their logs ingested, indexed, and archived differently. I only have access to my little arm of the company infrastructure. Logs should be monitored properly by the responsible owners of each property (or in a more sensible way), but unfortunately this is not the case... :)
perryh2··on Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer Faces Morale Challenge
I'd run it across the entire site. Sure, we do have logs, but it's not easy to access them for all *.yahoo.com. Logs from each property are ingested into different places. The infrastructure is way more complex than it should be making bare-minimum monitoring like alerts on non-200 responses on all properties difficult to maintain.
perryh2··on Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer Faces Morale Challenge
don't know why this is broken, but I'll file a bug. thank you! One of these days, I'm going to run a bot that crawls all pages on yahoo.com and reports non-200 responses...
perryh2··on Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer Faces Morale Challenge
I work on Daily Fantasy at Yahoo and would just like to point out that we do compete with DK/Fanduel :) https://yahoo.com/dailyfantasy/
perryh2··on The University of Illinois’ Startup Ecosystem
I graduated in 2014 and I've definitely seen a huge growth of startup programs over the course of the last 5 years. I don't think some things (e.g. hackathons) existed before my time.
perryh2··on Ask HN: How do I keep child porn out of my site?
Yahoo, as well as Tumblr, uses an internal service that is synced with PhotoDNA. Content is also filtered by outsourced help as well. There is some company that employs people in some Southeast Asia country which provide this service to many Internet companies (including Yahoo). (I work at Yahoo and discussed this with the team here).
