pera··on Ask HN: Someone is proxy-mirroring my website, can I do anything?
*.us.to are FreeDNS subdomains, I would contact them. Additionally you could do a whois and contact the ISP.
pera··on IPv6 Internet is broken
It's not IPv6 that is broken, it's fucking Cogent and they have always been like that
pera··on Apple to move 40-45% iPhone production to India
Your experience seems very different from what several international human rights organisations have been reporting for the past two decades.

I'd like to invite everyone here to follow for instance CLW: https://chinalaborwatch.org/

pera··on Mona Sans and Hubot Sans
Indeed, I have opened a new ticket to report this issue: https://github.com/github/mona-sans/issues/24
pera··on The Death of Quanta Magazine
> For me the worst part of the video was at 11:53, where they showed a graph with a bright point labelled “negative energy peak” on it. The problem is that this is not a plot of data, it’s just a drawing, with no connection to the experiment. Lay people will think they are seeing actual data, so this is straightforward disinformation.

This is exactly how I interpreted that part of the video [1], and it makes me feel sad because Quanta is the only kinda pop-science magazine I enjoy reading.

As a lay parson, when it comes to quantum mechanics I have to use my own set of heuristics to identify quackery: this Quanta's video checks almost all my indicators of low quality quantum woo - I don't like to say this about someone's else work but just the aesthetics reminds me to pseudo-scientific documentaries.

pera··on Twitter was special. But it's time to leave
I find the general negativity towards Mastodon in HN quite intriguing, considering that:

- ActivityPub is basically a two-way RSS (which is the most beloved tech in this community)

- It's open source and you can setup your own server in one afternoon

- No sorting algorithms, no tracking, no ads

- Relatively easy to customize/hack

And to add to this, during this past month I have seen the majority of the infosec, astronomy, psychics, maths, biology, ecology communities migrating to Mastodon and for whatever reason my timeline is currently way more interesting and engaging than what Twitter offered to me.

I'm not a big social network user and I guess that's why I don't understand the sentiment in this comment section, but I do enjoy using Mastodon at the moment and I hope it stays as cool as it is now :)

pera··on Is this the end of crypto?
I'm quite tired for a proper response right now but I wanted to point out that this has nothing to do with UK-Argentina bilateral relations: Argentina's economy has a very complex history, specially during the past 20 years, and things that you give for granted like transferring money internationally with your bank or having a savings account are simply not an option.
pera··on Is this the end of crypto?
I'm from Argentina but live in the UK: in 2020 my mom needed an urgent oncological treatment and the only method I had to transfer the money was using a cryptocurrency. I really don't like to talk about this stuff but when people here in HN keep making arguments like "oh who needs this stuff, I can send money to my friends with the Monzo app" it really makes me feel like my problems as someone from the third world don't matter at all
pera··on What’s so great about functional programming anyway?
Your first point is also true for procedural programming languages, but at least in Haskell you know that if something is, say, a functor then you know what sort of things you can do with that value. I think it should be possible for an IDE to suggest functions if you used the reverse application operator:

  [1, 2, 3] &
              ^-- suggestion here
Unfortunately this wouldn't be very idiomatic in Haskell, maybe in Idris with |> this would make more sense?
pera··on Meta lays off 11,000 people
I wonder why the two biggest recent layoffs were by the two largest (US-based) social networks, is this the end of an era? And where is all that advertisement money going now?

As a side note, it's crazy to think that Meta stocks are currently -75% from its peak last year.

pera··on We've hit 1M monthly active users
Yes, it's like e-mail. You can even interact with people from other platforms thanks to ActivityPub.
pera··on We've hit 1M monthly active users
There is actually a surge in racist content on Twitter at the moment:

pera··on We've hit 1M monthly active users
Make no mistake, Mastodon is making history right now: At this point no matter what happens next many many people will stay in the fediverse. Interesting times!
pera··on Mastodon's founder has a vision to democratize social media
> In practice it's still a desert.

That's not true anymore: I am currently following over 100 academics and scientists who decided to migrate over the past week, they are very active and as a result my timeline is much more interesting and engaging than Twitter.

I have never seen such a big exodus in my 25+ years online, this is historic.

pera··on Ask HN: Is anyone able to download their Twitter data at the moment?
Found an alternative way that works for those who live in a country covered by GDPR or the UK Data Protection Act:

https://help.twitter.com/en/forms/privacy/request-account-in...

I received a confirmation e-mail almost immediately.

pera··on Ask HN: Is anyone able to download their Twitter data at the moment?
Thanks, I feel I should have done this before...
pera··on It looks like I’m moving to Mastodon
Academics, scientists, and engineers. Almost every non-institutional account I used to follow in Twitter is now actively using Mastodon. The only "category" of people I haven't seen migrating yet is independent journalists, and I can understand why.
pera··on It looks like I’m moving to Mastodon
All my family and about half of my friends are still using it. In, almost everyone who I know who joined during that time stayed, but most still use WhatsApp and Telegram as well.
pera··on It looks like I’m moving to Mastodon
It seems that your prediction was too bold: he has accumulated ~1100 followers so far
pera··on Functional programming should be the future of software
That's interesting, I often find the tooling one of the best things that FP languages offer. In OCaml for instance I found Dune to be fantastic and extremely intuitive. Another very good experience I had was with Elixir and Hex. In Haskell I personally think that there are indeed quite a few things that could be improved around build system and packaging, but overall it's not really that bad once you learn the quirks.
pera··on Tell HN: Google refusing Gmail login with Firefox
I can't reproduce this, also in Arch and uBlock in Private Mode but with FF 105
pera··on 4th leak reported on Nord Stream pipelines in Baltic Sea
Time to get a ham radio license maybe
pera··on Meta has banned the personal Facebook accounts for everyone on our team
TV channels don't want you to mute your TV when they display ads, should TVs block this functionality to force you listen to their ad?
pera··on Ask HN: Do you still buy physical tech books like “Learn Rust” or “Learn Go”?
I highly prefer physical because I already spend too much time in front of a screen, plus I like the versatility they offer (e.g. highlighting, making notes, bookmarking, moving them around, etc.). The only digital books I have bought were from the Beta / Early Access programs of Manning and the Pragmatic Bookshelf, and few from independent authors who decide to go digital exclusively.
pera··on Anti-royal protesters are being arrested in the U.K. as 'Not My King' tag grows
That arrest happened on Saturday during the proclamation ceremony, the coffin only arrived yesterday (Sunday).
pera··on Anti-royal protesters are being arrested in the U.K. as 'Not My King' tag grows
Note that the arrests happened during the proclamation ceremony of the new king. The funeral will be next Monday.
pera··on WikiHouse – Open source, modular, wood based, zero carbon housing
They probably would use fire retardant timber/plywood. There is a pretty cool office building in Barcelona (still under construction I believe?) entirely made of wood that uses this kind of treated wood: https://wittywood.es/en/
pera··on Finnish as a world language?
I stand corrected! I have visited Catalonia quite a few times and never noticed they being homophones. In Argentina, or at least in Buenos Aires, they even teach you in primary school to pronounce the v using your upper teeth and lower lips (it makes it sound closer to f), and the b only with both lips. I'm very surprised to learn this, can't imagine pronouncing vacaciones as bacaciones hahah that's amazing, I wonder where this difference comes from.
pera··on Finnish as a world language?
> like the homophones b and v

They aren't :) where are you from? do you pronounce "vaso" and "baso" in the same way? (in Argentina and Spain at least they are clearly distinct)

pera··on Reducing methane is the fastest strategy available to reduce warming
I think you need to consider that methane has a half-life of about 10 years in the atmosphere, carbon dioxide on the other hand is one order of magnitude higher than that. I understand now that what you are trying to say is that CO2 will still be a problem, that's a fact that nobody is denying here, but the way you stated your original post makes it sound like reducing CH4 emissions would be meaningless in regards to global warming.
