pepsi_can··on Ask HN: Does anyone here drive anything exciting?
I'm still living off Ramen and boot-strapping my company. But when I was an employee I bought a 2005 Dodge SRT-4. I had wanted this car since it came out back in 2001. Not really an expensive car but at the time it was the fastest car one could buy under 20K dollars.

0-60 in 5.8 seconds, 2.4L 4 cylinder turbo charged engine with 230 HP, a LSD and only 2900 lbs. Not too shabby for a cheap economy car and very fun to drive!

Back in high school I bought lots of Honda Repair Manuals and studied them. I swapped out a 1990 Honda Civic's original engine with a more powerful Japanese engine. Then I figured out how to install a ZEX dry nitrous system.

Although I estimated a measly 160-170 HP to the wheels, the car only weighed a little over 2000 lbs. When I took it to the race track I had plenty of fun embarrassing 50K luxury cars with my shit brown Civic!

How much had I spent of my $5.15 an hour pay check?

     Used 1990 Honda Civic - $500
Used Japanese performance engine - $600
     Used nitrous system - $500

Embarrassing the driver of a 50K dollar car? Priceless.
pepsi_can··on Ask HN: Want to join a startup as a developer, looking for a mentor
I wrote an application for programmers who want to learn and practice using data structures and algorithms. It includes tutorials and video lectures. I created it because I myself wanted more practice. I hope you find it useful.

pepsi_can··on Mozilla Labs: The Location Bar Has To Go
I understand the sentiment. But to give you an example of the disparity between someone like you and the general public and how clueless they can be; my wife once saw a hash bang in the url bar and ran to me in a panic. She was scared she had gotten some kind of computer virus.
pepsi_can··on Ask HN: Just quit my job to work on a startup idea. Any advice?
Don't go overboard choosing the latest and greatest frameworks, language, tools, etc. You need to be productive, try and stick with what you are productive with. Find a good balance.

If you have a family, in the most kind way you can think of, learn to say no. While you are at home trying hard to work, everyone will think you have lots of free time.

Find a place where you can work quietly when you really need it. Preferably not at home, not at a coffee shop, not anywhere you could be interrupted.

Find a mentor/buddy. Someone who knows more than you do. When some server configuration bullshit gets in your way, when some framework bug stops you, when some Ruby version 1.8.7 patch 154 won't work with Delayed Job (a made up example) you'll need someone with the experience to help you.

Wake up at the same time everyday. Got to sleep at the same time every day. Eat breakfast. Exercise. Throw out your television, don't visit HackerNews or reddit except once a day.

Use a managed hosting service avoid VPS unless you are already a good sys admin.

Thanks for posting! I found the video interesting!
pepsi_can··on Show HN: Quotica - A beautiful way to collect quotes.
I thought this idea was cute. I especially enjoyed the design of the application itself.

But why, oh why, would you make it so hard for me to try it out?

First I couldn't decide if I wanted to spend the time to register based on your landing page. I'm lazy. Eventually I decided to register since you guys didn't have any comments on this thread. After registering I needed to confirm my email. Sigh.

Next I signed into my email and clicked on the confirmation link. Which took me to the log in page where I had to type my info again.

I would have been much more interested if I could simply see and play with the application itself without having to fill out any forms. After playing with the app I can then decide if I want to register.

pepsi_can··on Ask HN: How is the Portland web dev/startup scene?
Is 50K/year typical for a development position in Portland? Seems a little on the low side.
pepsi_can··on Why do people keep saying my week-end project?
It is a way to convey that the project is somewhat unfinished. Because it is mostly a personal project, the project may not be entirely accessible, it might not be the most scalable, it might not be locale sensitive or otherwise reminds the projects user's that it's not a finished production product.
pepsi_can··on Looking For A Co-Founder For An Online Programming Interview Tutor
It's written using Ruby On Rails 2.X. The exercises are written in C. I also have an exercise recommendation server I wrote in Clojure.

If a co-founder is a software developer, I'd like someone with experience writing a web app front to back. Maybe someone that specializes in something I'm not too familiar with. I noticed you're into systems programming, I'd love to work with someone with that kind of experience!

As far as qualities go, I'd like someone who can work remotely and get shit done. Someone that will communicate immediately how they feel about the project. For example, if they didn't want to be a part of it anymore, they would just come out and tell me and not just disappear.

I am currently living in Midland, TX. I'll be moving to El Paso, TX soon. Nearest tech city is Austin, TX. I drive there occasionally for meet ups. As soon as my wife finishes school, we're off to California.

pepsi_can··on Credit Suisse: America Is Not Broke (Understanding The Modern Monetary System)
Aren't most European countries more socialist than the United States and thus have higher tax rates, more workers rights and more social programs? Would wealthy citizens and corporations really move to one these countries? Correct me if I'm wrong but my inuition is that their taxes would be higher in Europe.

Where could a wealthy entity go?

pepsi_can··on Building a Web Application that makes $500 a Month – Part I
Can anyone elaborate on this? From the regular license description:

The main thing you cannot do is offer the item up for resale either on its own or as part of a project. So you can use the item in a free game, but not in a game that is on sale. You can use the item in a website, but not in a web template that you sell.

Here are the full legal terms: http://themeforest.net/wiki/support/legal-terms/licensing-te...

Specifically, I wonder if you are referring to this line:

(d) Unless you have our prior written consent, you must not directly or indirectly license, sub-license, sell or resell or provide for free the Work or offer to do any of these things. All of these things are referred to as Resale.

(g) You must not incorporate the Work in a work which is created for Resale by you or your client.

I wonder what they mean by "indirectly selling" the Work. Does this apply to SaaS? What about Freemium products?

pepsi_can··on Ask HN: Does MacBook Pro is really worth its price?
I would argue that a satisfying keyboard is also important for a software developer.

Some of the things I mentioned are probably not important for productivity. But in my case my work laptop and my personal laptop are the same. So a light-up keyboard and good speakers are nice to have when watching movies on a Friday night with my wife (For example).

pepsi_can··on Ask HN: Does MacBook Pro is really worth its price?
I've found my MBP worth the price for the following reasons:

- I enjoy the 8 hour battery life (This alone may have been worth it)

- The light up keyboard

- The feel of the keyboard

- It can drive my high resolution external display

- The screen works outside in the sun

- Extra large track pad, with gesture recognition

- It's thin

- The speaker quality

pepsi_can··on Ask HN: I quit my job today. Any words of wisdom for me?
Good luck!

This is probably obvious but I overlooked it.

When I quit my job to start working on my online programming tutor full time, I went a overboard in choosing what ever programing tools seemed really cool.

I regret that decision. By all means, expand your own personal knowledge portfolio, but if you are working on a project with a serious deadline, choose the tools you are already productive with.

pepsi_can··on How can I learn to program?
I wonder if my site can help you. It is intended as a online tutor designed for programmers preparing for job interviews but I think you'd find the find the practice problems, in-depth tutorials and the video lectures (coming soon) helpful once you get a bit of programming experience.

If you happen to try it out, I can answer any programming questions you may have, give you tips, feedback, etc.

pepsi_can··on Ask HN: I have systems OCD, do you?
I promise I'm not calling you out or anything. Please don't be offended, I just want to share a funny observation!

My wife actually has OCD and only our immediate family knows about it. Often friends will use "I'm OCD about X" as a figure of speech.

My wife and I simply look at each other with sly smiles.

I'd like to repeat that I'm am not calling you out nor am I offended. Just a funny observation. You never know if the person you are talking to actually has OCD!

pepsi_can··on Ask HN: Honestly, what's evil about Oracle?
I don't really know much about Oracle but from what I read their company culture is not the kind of culture I'd work for.

For example the way they treated Gosling.

pepsi_can··on Debugging Go code (a status report)
I've always used debuggers as a faster form of print statements. It faster to inspect several values using the debugger than it is to write and then delete a bunch of print statements.

However print statements become my go-to tool when debugging multithreaded code.

pepsi_can··on FROM useless compsci undergrad TO web app developer: how do I get started?
The best way is to complete as many projects as you can and read as much code as you can. You'll want to take a deliberate learning approach.

Check out out "Pragmatic Thinking and Learning" by Andy Hunt. It will show you how to build a skill investment portfolio.

pepsi_can··on My Favorite Engineering Interview Question
I was unsure on how to answer this question since most of my experience is in application development.

I'd like to not be embarrassed when asked this question. What advice would you give someone wanting to learn enough to answer this question?

Are there any projects, books or other resources one could undertake?
