peoplerock··on How Google Taught Me to Cache and Cash-In
Thanks for that link. Interesting on the how ebay and myspace use cookie size with great abandon (v. Amazon & Google, for ex.). Leaves me wondering whether they know what it's costing them. And if so - whether they are realizing significant savings with other performance figures.
peoplerock··on Why do event sites suck?
Sorry. Not finding it inviting to see on your home page only a logo and "Sign up for the launch to be aware!"

You expect me to provide any sort of email - with no statement of company mission, target audience, benefits claimed?

Go directly to jail. Do not pass Go. Do not collect any email addresses.

peoplerock··on Log Files Do Not Improve Security
As a novice at security issues, I find the discussion sounding helpful, but would appreciate HN discussion.

The general issue regarding security and blogs seems obvious: Shouldn't logs be considered one element in security analysis ? - not something I see discussed in my short time here. Anyway, it gives me pause to think, "Where have I implemented log-analysis in my (or my cron's) routine... and planned for follow-up?"

peoplerock··on Ask HN: Why not Flex?
BTW: V. classy operation at SmallTalkApp... wish I could have entered a suggestion via your "Feedback" button... without going through Bloomplex's "question handling". Makes it feel way less like I'm actually connected with developers of STA... taken away to "getsatisfaction.com ...

As for the original topic, I feel your pain over losing a chunk of life "to fix cross browser HTML/CSS/JavaScript issues". But I appreciate your raising the flex issue; the ensuing discussion has convinced this noob that he neeeds to study up on and experiment with it.

peoplerock··on Ask HN:What do you use for searching for scientific articles
"Papers" definitely looks worth a test drive (Free for 30 days; then $42/é29), though I'd love to see something web-based, not requiring download to your PC, particularly if you have to do some of your research from within institutions on their PCs/Macs. [ BTW: "papers" won an Apple award, so probably works on Macs as well as PCs. ]
peoplerock··on Ask HN:What do you use for searching for scientific articles
I've noticed some of same issues with http://scholar.google.com ...

It seems great if i'm trying to locate a specific article or ref by title or author ...and has in fact helped me at least get the exact citation for very obscure dissertations, conference papers, etc. But it's proved so helpful for search by keyword/topic.

peoplerock··on Make Frontpage of Slashdot, Reddit, Hacker News == Google Disables AdSense
Yes, it's a nasty, no-easy-solution dilemma: Shugging off the spammers yet not mistreating the "false positive" decent customers that your algorithm bans.

What I find distressing (and would find even more so had I been the victim) is that Google refuses to to identify which part of TOS have been violated. Police and courts have to specify which parts of criminal code a defendant is accused of violating. Can we not get similar fairness from corporate America?

Are you afraid that such clarifications would give too much useful info to actual spammers?

Well, maybe a slight edge. But I might compare this to the dilemma that clarifying legal defendants their constitutional rights ("Miranda" in the U.S.) deprives law enforcement of some opportunities to tap some useful self-incrimination: It's part of the cost of valuing Constitutional rights. Would Google dare to offer its customers some Consumer Bill of Rights?

peoplerock··on Erlang articles on HighScalability.com
Just think of today as a no-procrastination holiday...

We can all catch up on meaningful hacker news when the reddit-ers evaporate overnight :)

peoplerock··on Web Sockets in HTML 5 might solve the http pull problem once and for all
Gotta hope that the reality will be as potent as the "hope" - since ubiquity of implementation of HTML5 may once again tax our patience. [If only all browsers updated as smoothly as FF (imho).]

I've also got to hope, along with commenter to the blog: "hope it won’t involve the same amount of oddities between browsers, as for example XmlHttpRequest does."

peoplerock··on ATT dumps Kevin Mitnick
A service provider whose top priority was security could have taken another approach to KM... using him like the canary in a mine shaft, an indicator of problems with their security system (allowing all-numerals password would be just one example of such a problem that ought to be fixed).
peoplerock··on Ask HN: I'd like to start taking amphetamines. What do you recommend?
There have been a lot of thoughtful threads here that offer pros, cons, and the variety of personal experiences. In particular: note that the impact on someone with ADHD (maybe Paul E was one such?) are likely to be different that for a non-ADHD person.

searchyc.com seems to be down right now but a google on ritalin at HN will give you a lot of starting points:

peoplerock··on This September, OLED no longer "three to five years away"
For text I can live with light on dark... as long as I can reverse when needed.

...which is the joy (on my aging PowerBook at least) of cmd-opt-cntl-8 -- also a real treat to scare a noob relative into thinking I've destroyed their Mac ;)

peoplerock··on jQuery UI with Richard Worth
So I'm new to codebetter.com, but this announcement is ony about a ?face-to-face? meeting? Whew - I hardly remember them. I was expecting an article/interview. That not appearing I looked for a video. No.

Am I missing the link to streaming of the event? ...or there nothing beyond an RSVP to Alexandria VA (if I can fly cross-country that day)?
