penprog··on Girls Get Better Grades Than Boys
I always got Bs in highschool. These were 89s and 87s. My homework average, which usually accounted for 20 to 30% of my grade was usually 80 or lower.

Thankfully I left loving learning and am always learning new things from different subjects I am interested in but I feel for those not as privileged/lucky as me.

Education needs a rework, one size fits all doesn't work. Splitting grades I think is just a bandaid on the problem.

I think instead of forcing younger students to memorize multiplication tables and which shoe belongs to which profession (my first F. I remember getting it in kindergarten) we should try to figure out what style of learning suits them.

It's a different sample though. People that do Harvard and MIT moocs are usually people that want to learn the subject and are self motivating whereas school is forced upon everyone. Willing or unwilling.

Basically your post confirms the theory of the person above. That grades aren't measuring mastery of knowledge but the skill to obey arbitrary rules.

penprog··on A message from Tim Cook about Apple’s commitment to your privacy
I think a lot of it was social engineering and bad passwords. If you are using multiple services and one is compromised you can pretty much give up access to everything if you use the same password all around.
penprog··on Yes, we’re being bought by Microsoft
It's realistic. Minecraft is this generations pokemon. In fact I think it's bigger. Not only boys but a significant amount of girls play it. Not only does it have cultural value it also makes money (which instagram doesn't)
penprog··on Peter Thiel: Competition is for losers
This website is the website for the Wall Street Journal. Wall Street is pretty much used to describe the financial markets of the US as a whole. If you are reading an article about finance it's useful for the reader to have instant access to the stock price information.

How anyone would find this to seem scammy I wouldn't understand.

Sooo... you want a world without business or government entities? What?
penprog··on Doom
What sold me about this game is that it was made by the creators of Soldat. I have so many good memories playing that game.
penprog··on Dev for succesfull kickstarter Divinity: Original Sin talks about his experience
One of the most enlightening blog posts I've read on development of software applications. Talks about how they had to manage investor and kickstarter backer expectations. How they cut half of the content they created because if was bad and how iteration was key to their dev process.

This blog post describes perfectly what is needed for a software product to succeed.

penprog··on TV is increasingly for old people
I wasn't trying to be a jerk, I should have explained myself better. Basically using a smart tv is analogous to young people using the internet in this situation because

A. You are picking and choosing your content.

B. You aren't exposed to advertisers (unless you are using hulu but even then you are picking what show you want to watch)

C. You aren't paying a massive monthly subscription.

D. It works using the internet, not cable.

The article isn't so much about using a TV (the actual device that displays the picture) or a computer monitor as it was about watching "traditional" tv (the content, shown in a scheduled manner)

Smart TV and cable are not the same.

> It makes sense to keep things separate, even physically separate

Saying something doesn't make it true.

>2. If I watch TV, I do not want to be bothered about thinking what to watch. I reserve these kinds of decisions for work or for things that actually matter.

Fair point. It's the same reason I listen to pandora in that sometimes I'd rather not choose.

> 3. If another person makes the program for me, I'm likely to be exposed to interesting things that I would not have picked by myself.

Maybe but more often than not, this isn't true unless you find the massive amounts reality tv to be interesting.

But none of the reasons you describe make TV with cable optimal for anything except lying back and having random (not necessarily good or interesting) entertainment thrown at you and exposing yourself to hours of psychological marketing tricks.

penprog··on TV is increasingly for old people
Same, I am currently in college and have free cable in my room. I even had a TV at one point. Never hooked them up. Ended up selling the tv.
penprog··on When Feces Is the Best Medicine
It was talked about when it was said how it was embarrassing for patients to have to find their own donors.
