this was on 2005 too

penguinlinux··on Ask HN: Shall I continue or pivot?
You should pitch this app to Conde Nast media. Specially their women magazines. They would love an app like this customized with their branding. Specially if the products advertised on their magazines also display on your app. This will make the magazine more social in a mobile world.
penguinlinux··on LogMeIn to discontinue free remote access product
I once wrote a pretty cool batch script that would use a minimal vmc executable which then tunneled a reverse vnc session using putty's plink . I used to package it and sent it to people that needed tech support, they would click on the icon and it would then route their session over ssh to my computer at the office. Then we moved to free logmein but i guess now i have to search for that script again.
penguinlinux··on Ask HN: So your manager fires one of your coworkers no word why, What do you do?
Thanks for the advice. I will bring these question this friday and will ask my boss to get together and just explain that I am worried that the same thing can happen to anyone including me.
penguinlinux··on Ask HN: So your manager fires one of your coworkers no word why, What do you do?
I did ask my manager but he couldn't give me a concrete reason as far as my coworker I don't want to reach out to him right away because I know he is probably feeling very hurt and know he probably needs a little time to process what just happened.
penguinlinux··on Ask HN: Alternatives to DigitalOcean?
Go with aws , they have a free tier service. You can easily get a cloud machine there in a mini instance. Plus you get to play with their web console or use their command line and interact with your instance from your linux machine or mac.
penguinlinux··on Ask HN: what chair are you using for coding and how comfortable is it?
Office depot chairs that were bought on discount by our company, even the CEO uses one of these generic chairs and if that is good enough for him it is good enough for me.
penguinlinux··on PaCanvas (BETA) - Pac-Man clone in HTML5

penguinlinux··on Ask HN: what's the best way to find the right medical specialist in the US?
Does your insurace allow you to see anyone in the country. You are looking for a specialist but you don't say in which state?
penguinlinux··on Ask HN: Would you hire a college kid who has completed the Matasano Challenges?
Depends on the need of the company.
penguinlinux··on Ask HN: Any Hackers Love Sports?
Wait until the Word Cup comes this year, I know many hackers that love Soccer.
penguinlinux··on Ask HN: How to deal with competitors?
Your competitor is doing something else. Better advertising, better customer support, better prices, find out what is it that these customers like. Remember your customers are not only buying a service but a relationship with you.

Any links to your company and your competitor, so that we can compare you two

penguinlinux··on Ask HN: How to deal with an abusive co-worker?
You are not in high school anymore, you don't need to accept the bullying of this guy. Tell him to act like adult, and tell your boss that he needs to follow proper HR practices and control this guy. Your sanity and peace of mind depends on a healthy work environment. If your boss can't control this guy tell him that you will seek legal advice on how to deal with this situation.

You boss will hear this and make sure things get under control. the last thing he needs is a lawsuit

penguinlinux··on Ask HN: How do you wake up?
if you have trouble waking up put your alarm and don't snooze it, just wake up. Drink a full glass of water and jump on the shower, a cold morning shower will wake you up.
penguinlinux··on Ask HN: How do you generate fake data?
you can find datasets online and customize them for your application or needs?

What exactly are you trying to accomplish what kind of data are you looking to reproduce.

penguinlinux··on How can a failed 40 year old tech entrepreneur find a job at a startup?
This person does not say what type of skills he brings to the table.
penguinlinux··on Ask HN: How long before you leave?
you don't specify the real reason why you dislike this job.
penguinlinux··on Ask HN: How to fire your co-founder?
You are trying to throw your cofounder under the bus without going directly to him first? Tell him whats on your mind. At least you owe him that. At one point you picked him to be your cofounder and now maybe things are not working out, it might be his fault, maybe he is having issues or doesn't know he is not collaborating as much, but you owe him at least a direct conversation man to man. He will appreciate this more than being thrown under the bus.

again, I don't know the full details of your situation but there is two sides to a story. Whatever you end up doing won't be pretty but talking is and discussing things hombre a hombre is the best approach.

penguinlinux··on Hi Can you recommend a mobile mail client that doesn't use a ton of bandwidth?

penguinlinux··on Is there any value to a CS degree at 50?
I have a recommendation, If you are good with Linux and setting up servers why don't you become a DevOps/Sysadmin.

You can find a job in that field, Here are some of the skills you will need.

1.-Linux know how to write scripts, bash. python, 2.-Learn to automate server setups with Chef,Puppet, Ansible 3.-Learn how to deploy software using Capistrano, Jenkins, Maven 4.-Learn how to help developers setup Dev Environments.

I am a sysadmin been doing this job for almost 12 years and I am not old but I not a spring chicken either, but I have job offers all the time. I have a great salary and I come home and learn more stuff everyday on my own. I get paid to do what I love.

It doesn't matter how old you are, if you are trying to compete with young developers that might be hard but I can tell you that developers hate setting up systems or debuging issues and that's where Devops engineers come in handy.

I have a few books i can send you if you are interested.

Cheers

penguinlinux··on The delusion of Social Networks
I work in technology, I am a geek who has worked for big companies and yet I don't use Facebook, I think is a waste of time. I realize that most people there are just self promoting, I use linked in which is more useful for me to make connections.
penguinlinux··on Ask HN: What are the best optimizations you have made?
Tweaked the caching layer for one of the busiest technology media site on the Internet. using only 2 varnish servers I was able to front millions of hits to 5 web back end nodes running wordpress. The configuration for varnish was tweaked so good that we even considered dropping Akamai.
