penguin_booze··on How the Disaster of "Forever Chemicals" Was Kept Secret
They should really consider adding an audio version, even if AI generated.
penguin_booze··on How the Disaster of "Forever Chemicals" Was Kept Secret
No punishment can undo the crime. So we might has well end the criminal and save the money that clothe and feed them otherwise.

But the larger point is that we should abolish the notion of 'limited liability' about corporations. That'll strike fear into the heart of executives, knowing that the law can come after both them and all their moneys and possessions. Suddenly the thought of 'oh, what if I fuck up?' pop up in their heads. They'll imagine their families begging on the streets for basic sustenance. That, if nothing else, will get them to behave like a normal person.

penguin_booze··on Why are European countries moving their gold out of North America?
That's step 1 done. Steps to follow are: move off the US dollar, cancel trade agreements with the US and restore your own laws in your country, evict US military bases from your country.

penguin_booze··on CEO fired developers to make room for AI. Developers create open source AI CEO
> What does a CEO(and other managers) do really?

Take risk with other people's lives and earn the big bucks for that.

You think the rich will let that happen?
penguin_booze··on Firefox 157 will include JPEG XL by default on all platforms
> 2024: Firefox says they will ship support if Google implements a Rust version

OOC, why does Firefox care what language Google used for their implementation?

penguin_booze··on Apple Releases New Polishing Cloth
Apple will be releasing packets of Apple-approved electrons to charge your Apple devices. Would you believe it - only costs the paltry sum of $2000 a pop! Charging cable with Apple-approved copper atoms will be extra, though; not that much, just $799.
penguin_booze··on Why aren't smart people happier? (2022)
I first came upon this phrase from the movie 'Liberal Arts' (quoting some religious text):

For in much wisdom is much grief. And he that increaseth knowledge, increaseth sorrow.

penguin_booze··on Remote workers report the highest well-being in study of 7,700 employees
> For years, many employers have worried that work-from-home arrangements leave employees isolated, disconnected from coworkers and more likely to leave their jobs.

Aww! All this while, I didn't know RTO came from a place of genuine worry and care about your workers. There I was thinking, that RTO was more about control and domination. Forgive me master, for I knew not.

penguin_booze··on US announces new sanctions on top ICC figures
You know, there could be a world where US sanctions are as priceless as toilet paper rolls. But that needs collective action.
penguin_booze··on The Amazon tax
The income tax in UK has this quirk: once you fall near the top tax bracket, you retrospectively lose all tax-free allowances you could have availed, had you not fallen in the top tax bracket.

Likewise, once corporations blow past a revenue cap, they shouldn't be eligible for lower rate of corporate tax. If the US is any cautionary tale (it always is), it's a moral imperative not to let corporations get too big. Letting corporations grow big and still avail tax cuts, is like feeding your own cancer.

penguin_booze··on India has paved the way for charging merchants a fee on UPI transactions
> US-India trade deals

There it is! Behind every revealed shittery and fuckery, there's one name that constantly come up. As for this example, I'll give you a clue: it's not India.

penguin_booze··on The Iran War Is a Whole New Level of Quagmire for the US
> Just not USA.

US does whatever the most expedient is. Democracy was the 'flavour of the month' some time ago. Even then, one can only assume it was front to some "friendly" bullying. Now the mask slipped.

penguin_booze··on Jason Arday, ex-Cambridge professor at centre of plagiarism row, found dead
The whole tale reminded me of the case of George Santos (Or, Scamtos, as he's known since then). Regardless of the facts, the way this ended up is tragic.
penguin_booze··on Understanding is the new bottleneck
> Aren't we supposed to be taking ourselves out of the loop now, and letting the agents loop themselves

That's what Boris Cherney said. Boris Cherney is not your dad. You don't have to listen to him.

penguin_booze··on Deutsche Bank becomes first foreign yuan clearing bank in Europe
Cozying up to China warrants caution. But moving away from USD is an absolute imperative. It's good to have options, you know.

penguin_booze··on German advocacy group lodges criminal complaint over Meta AI glasses
I suppose these devices might be a helping hand to folks who are visually impaired.

As if it's not enough to run a global surveillance platform, they now have released the world a army of live, lobotomised surveillance drones. My take is that the only legislation we need is this: give legal immunity to the people who want to grab the glasses off the smug faces of the said drones, and smash it into pieces.

penguin_booze··on Itadakimasu: A word you say to the food, not the cook

penguin_booze··on The UK's war on anonymity has come to America
> The right people to protect children are those responsible for them - their parents and guardians.

They can only do so much, within the boundaries of their home. It takes a village to raise a child. The policies, thus, should be made village-wide.

penguin_booze··on US strikes $1.2B deal to pay German firm to halt offshore wind projects
> make stupider and stupider decisions on ever larger scales

They found the right man for it. Cometh the hour, cometh the man.

penguin_booze··on I'm switching my phone from Android to Linux
I'm all for using a Linux phone. The caveats thereof are mentioned in this thread.

I've a wish list of one, though: make the Web the primary GUI front end. Essentially, apps are a specialised browser window. That way, I can program (both the front- and back-end) in plain text, just using regular Linux tools and a text editor -- no bloatware and gargantuan IDEs mandated.

penguin_booze··on Changes at Google DeepMind: Demis Hassabis from CEO to Chair, Jeff Dean departs
