penetrarthur··on Ask HN: What things do you wish you discovered earlier?
I especially like the exact moment during the workout when you feel that "blood starts flowing in the head again" and you gain some sort of clarity. Especially if I've been working really hard that day.
penetrarthur··on What Happens to Your Brain When You Stop Believing in God
My best argument is that there is no point to discuss any of it. All the people you discuss are irrelevant.
penetrarthur··on Launch HN: Bottomless (YC W19) – Coffee Restocked with a Smart Scale

God, this is like the best webpage in the internet. Thanks a lot!

There has to be someone naked. Let's find him/her.
penetrarthur··on Show HN: Strength News – An HN-inspired website for sport and gym enthusiasts
There is a fitness related website I used to read a lot - http://www.ergo-log.com/

You can post some stuff from there while more people haven't shown up.

penetrarthur··on Show HN: Egeria, a multidimensional spreadsheet for everybody
Doesn't work on pixel 2 xl. Says Egeria requires at least 1280x400 pixels to display correctly.
penetrarthur··on The cold start problem: how to build your machine learning portfolio
I think that experience in shipping and experience in maintaining a project is largely different. I'd rather work with someone who has maintained one live project, rather than with someone who has shipped 5. Especially on mobile. Shipping a simple game is not hard. Understanding how much you have fucked up with load times and fps is valuable. Understanding why certain technical and architectural decisions are wrong is valuable. I have rewritten big parts of the game just to fix performance issues even though the team has shipped 5 games before.
penetrarthur··on The cold start problem: how to build your machine learning portfolio
In the gamedev, I would not want to work with someone just because he has built a game on his own. Gamedev is notorious for having a low barrier of entry and then there is an exponential learning curve. I'd rather work with someone who has a deep understanding in some specific area or has worked on a library of some sort. I think there are a lot of other technical fields that work the same.
penetrarthur··on Ask HN: How to Evolve a Legacy .NET Application with Python
What is the reason to rewrite a legacy c# code to python?
penetrarthur··on WhatsApp Cofounder Brian Acton on Why He Left $850M Behind
Telegram. It also has channels similar to facebook feeds/twitter without comments and/or retweets.
penetrarthur··on Ask HN: Codebase at my work is a complete mess, what should I do?
Gamedev.

I joined a small company 8 months ago. The code at first felt somewhat sane, but the more I worked with it the more I understood that the whole project is a huge copypaste mom's spaghetti. I started rewriting everything I "legally"(somewhat within the scope of my tasks) could. I also kept asking the lead coder about the poor quality and poor decisions up to the point where all we did was argue. Management saw this and it turns out they were not satisfied with his performance for quite some time. He gets kicked out(after 4 years). During the 8 months I have deleted 1/3rd of the whole codebase, replacing it with much better code both quality and performance wise. I did that because I don't want to spend the next couple of years suffering from someone's bad decisions and complete lack of experience. Now I get to work on much more interesting tasks, everything gets delivered faster. Some of the stuff I wrote gets used across other teams. Only things that still keep me getting stuck in debugger are those I haven't rewritten and everyone agrees we have to rewrite them in near future.

I know I made a risky decision, but it was well worth it.

penetrarthur··on Ditch the Batteries: Off-Grid Compressed Air Energy Storage
Volvo diesel cars avoid turbo lag by storing compressed air. Not very relevant but interesting nevertheless https://www.roadandtrack.com/new-cars/car-technology/news/a2...
penetrarthur··on Ask HN: Learning multiple languages vs. mastering one
Don’t learn languages, learn frameworks instead. Pick a problem and find the most popular frameworks that are used to solve it. Learning language just for the sake of it is useless.
penetrarthur··on Machine Learning Crash Course
I've been reading about it "getting popular during the last two years" for at least 6 years.
penetrarthur··on Ask HN: How do you overcome the problems of task switching?
I use Trello, but the problem is rather in being too proud of how I did the previous task and being too excited so it distracts me from starting the next one.
penetrarthur··on Ask HN: How do you overcome the problems of task switching?
Thanks for the rich and insightful answer. I poorly phrased the "career" part of the question. Noone is pushing me to do more. What I meant was that I feel I can do better for the sake of the project and my own development but because of some "click" in my brain I am left unsatisfied with myself.
penetrarthur··on Ask HN: How do you overcome the problems of task switching?
Thanks! This is is very useful.
penetrarthur··on Ask HN: Which IDE you use and why?
It's not even about the hotkeys. It is rather about the fact that you start thinking in terms of how the given code can be refactored with just a couple refactoring functions. Working in large codebases becomes extremely easy. Inline this method, extract that method, extract interface here, delete this interface and use this base class instead of that, extract a class from parameters of the method...I could go for days.
penetrarthur··on Ask HN: Which IDE you use and why?
Everything jetbrains. Resharper at work, pycharm and idea at home.
penetrarthur··on Ask HN: What do you use to jot down random thoughts and ideas at any time/place?
I dump them into Google Keep and set a reminder for that particular note.
penetrarthur··on Waze Carpool
Let's hope it doesn't end up as Foursquare/Swarm.
penetrarthur··on Rust in 2018: easier to use
It is not about languages. It is mostly about frameworks. I want to write my next web project in a mature framework.

penetrarthur··on Can you make a 10-year malt whisky in weeks? The chemistry says yes
500$ isn't medium price range and that is not a result of perception. You can buy a lot for under 500$, I'd say everything but the "exclusive" stuff.
penetrarthur··on Ask HN: What's your daily-driver headphone model?
I've seen replacement leather pads for 20$ or 40$
penetrarthur··on Mono for Unreal Engine
Yeah, I am also surprised by the fact that people are constantly nagging about GC. In real gamedev on Unity, memory management is very serious and everything gets pooled. If GC is a problem, you rewrite the code so that it isn't.
