pdshrader··on We’ve Launched a Netflix Tracker
Agreed, for subscription models, retention is more important than number of eyeballs.

Still, it's a little ironic that in our move towards online television, where one of the principal benefits is more reliable tracking than the Nielsen ratings, we still find ourselves relying on surveys of two thousand families.

pdshrader··on Google search chief Singhal to quit, to be replaced by AI head
Disappointing headline--no robot revolutions to be seen here.
pdshrader··on How to Be a Lawyer Without Going to Law School
The breakdown between "Tuition" and "Professional Degree Tuition" is strange (it's a Berkeley Law breakdown), but those costs together are pretty accurate for any law school, T14 or not. Quite a few law schools have even higher tuition.
pdshrader··on Show HN: I packed 161,000 most common passwords into a 1MB file
what makes "l58jkdjp!" such a popular password? Is that something in a language other than english?
pdshrader··on Predicting Next Year's Breakout Artists
I notice many of the artists you predict as breakout artists are Latin artists, but almost no artists on the Billboard Hot 100 are Latin artists. Are you predicting that these artists will reach some (possibly international) top 100 list, or are you making predictions about the U.S. Top 100?

I would think that this might be more informative if you separated artists/singles that are clearly catering to different language populations.

pdshrader··on Facebook Leads an Effort to Lower Barriers to Internet Access
Frankly, it sounds like he's just recharacterizing basic efficiency plans to make it seem like Facebook is on some sort of altruistic mission. There's little to no action called for, no commitments towards altrustic ends. It's just a "hey, we should get more people online" (which only helps Facebook's bottom line) and a "we're trying to make Facebook load faster" (again, bottom line).
