pdelgallego··on GitHub is down
2017 S3 outage was a big reminder as well

pdelgallego··on Microsoft’s Q4 earnings and 2020 expectations
Azure regions/AZs are not equal to AWS regions/AZs thats why a single lightning strike can take down a whole region.

pdelgallego··on Ask HN: Why are there so many queue services but almost none support scheduling?
the current state is far from optimal. Some less AWS options are:

- Use DynamoDB TTL to trigger a delete and listen the dynamodb stream.

- Use step functions and pause execution for up to a year (1 million max concurrent executions)

pdelgallego··on Amazon expands its air cargo fleet
I don't think is the same case. AWS playbook will to abstract any customer operational cost into manage service ELK, MongoDB, Kafka, Redis, etc

I am sure there are hundreds of companies that were asking AWS to offer a fully managed Kafka service. I asked for it many times to my account manager when they where pitching Kinesis.

pdelgallego··on Amazon's empire rests on its low-key approach to AI
I read in Werners Vogels blog (amazon CTO), that there are four types of CTOs [1] based on Berray and Sampath paper. [2]

* Infrastructure Manager

* Technology Visionary and Operations Manager

* External Facing Technologist

* Big Thinker

Even just using IAM to grant permissions is going across those services is going to lock you in.

pdelgallego··on The Cloud is Just Another Sun [video]
That is one of the reasons AWS is giving a generous free tier for Lambda (1 million request per month). It is extremely easy to setup, and basically free for toy projects
pdelgallego··on Twitter migrates data to Google Cloud
it is The Jevons paradox [1]. I have seen it as well happening when I migrated a client from a standard cloud architecture to a serverless architecture.

>>> In economics, the Jevons paradox (sometimes Jevons effect) occurs when technological progress or government policy increases the efficiency with which a resource is used (reducing the amount necessary for any one use), but the rate of consumption of that resource rises due to increasing demand.

pdelgallego··on Would you still pick Elixir in 2019?
How does elixir plays in the serverless/FaaS world?
pdelgallego··on TypeScript at Google

pdelgallego··on Tech Giants Set to Face 3% Tax on Revenue Under New EU Plan
I am ok with free trade, as long as it also apply to freedom of movement of capital, goods, and people, and we have a common set of rules, and a common court that applies them.

pdelgallego··on Ask HN: Where do you host your API endpoint?
AWS ECS less powerful than k8s, but easier to configure for high availability, multi AZ/region, etc.
pdelgallego··on Plastc will cease operations and will not fulfill any pre-orders

pdelgallego··on What New York Can Learn from Barcelona’s ‘Superblocks’
Barcelona is a great city, but the construction of its subway is not the best example.

The construction of the Barcelona subway caused the collapse of at least one building, and over 50 needed to be evacuated in El Carmelo neighborhood.

Currently the construction of the subway is under investigation due to fraud, and bribery in the national court.

pdelgallego··on Ask HN: Alternatives to AWS?
I would love to read more about AWS vs Azure, how services compare, and strategies on how to avoid lock in.

Any recommendation?

pdelgallego··on Boto3 – AWS SDK for Python
> such as simultaneously backing up to s3 and glacier

I you want that for every object in the bucket (or specific files with a prefix), you are be able achieve that by adding a lifecycle rule:

1 Select the bucket 2 Add a new lifecycle rule 3 Action = Archive only 4 Archive to the Glacier Storage Class 0 after the object's creation date. (Enter '0' for same-day archival) 5 Save rule

You can automate that using aws cli

pdelgallego··on Nigeria 'on red alert' over Ebola death in Lagos
Only cover these two segment of the border. Spain is part of the Schengen area, as well as Portugal and France, so there is no need to have a real border with them.
pdelgallego··on Nigeria 'on red alert' over Ebola death in Lagos
The border between Spain and Morocco. Spain has two exclave located on the north coast of Africa, Ceuta and Melilla.

Every year ten of thousands of africans try to cross the border jumping over the 7m high fence.

pdelgallego··on Draft for an AngularJS style guide
The directory structure does not help to understand what kind of application is this one. Splitting the code into controllers, directives, services, ... or by pages hides the user cases. The only thing the directory structure is revealing is that this application use some kind MVC pattern, and that is just an implementation detail.

It would be great that when I open a project I see the main user stories/components, and all code related to a user case lies in a single place.

pdelgallego··on Little Lisp interpreter
You might enjoy Lisp in Small Pieces. Is one of my favorite books

The book is in two parts. The first starts from a simple evaluation function and enriches it with multiple name spaces, continuations and side-effects with commented variants, while at the same time the language used to define these features is reduced to a simple lambda-calculus.

The second part focuses more on implementation techniques and discusses precompilation for fast interpretation: threaded code or bytecode; compilation towards C. Some extensions are also described such as dynamic evaluation, reflection, macros and objects.
