pcj-github··on Protobuf-ES: Protocol Buffers TypeScript/JavaScript runtime
The protobuf javascript generator and runtime really shines when your stack is compiled using the closure compiler; it shrinks down to very little code. Unfortunately, very few people outside google use this.

The protobuf-gen-es plugin sounds nice, I'll definitely be checking it out.

However, I don't understand the desire for people to write protoc plugins in anything but C++, and I'm not even a C++ developer (I much prefer js/ts for many things). Instead of a single c++ source file with a builtin cool templating library which compiles trivially to a tiny binary, you inherit a huge dependency chain that includes the typescipt compiler and nodejs runtime. Totally unnecessary IMHO.

pcj-github··on I’m Not Sure That (If?) GitHub Copilot Is a Problem
Personally I don't think it matters if Copilot spits out large near-complete functions or smaller one-line snippets, or if you find it useful or not.

The fact is that it consumes a large corpus of work and launders it in way that removes all attribution should be a big no. That goes against the entire spirit of copyright law. It must be opt-in, or make Microsoft wait 95 years to incorporate code in public repos for their for-profit enterprise.

pcj-github··on Ask HN: Am I the only one not caring about GitHub Copilot?
Spot on! Great explanation.
pcj-github··on Fine-grained personal access tokens for GitHub
At least five years overdue; glad this finally happened.
pcj-github··on Chess Investigation Finds U.S. Grandmaster ‘Likely Cheated’ More Than 100 Times
It is a premature conclusion that Hans was cheating in this game. Let the proper process play out, whatever that may be. Magnus has not presented any actual evidence. Chess.com is not an impartial player here in this drama and cannot be considered source-of-truth (they just purchased Magnus' startup for ~$80M; their fortunes are linked and would be subject to similar biases). WSJ article has not really done a deep dive.
pcj-github··on Apple Introduces Apple Watch Ultra
They used the word "extreme" 15 times, sigh. I didn't realize wakeboarding was an "extreme" water sport. TIL.
pcj-github··on Google IoT Core will be discontinued on Aug. 16, 2023
I don't work for Google or really care, but the GCP bashing dogpile every time they cancel a product is just getting pretty unimaginative. They offer hundreds to thousands of services, and some bets just don't work out. Glad to see many other people have perfectly functioning crystal balls.
pcj-github··on Fishing gear accounts for an alarming amount of plastic in oceans (2021)
100 million pounds of lost gear by the fishing industry is such a ridiculous underestimate that, judging by some of the comments here, make people believe this number to be somehow OK. The fishing industry has been dodging responsibility for ocean pollution and habitat destruction for forever, good to see more research that people can use to put pressure on them to actually give a s** and change their ways.
pcj-github··on Supreme Court Overturns Roe vs. Wade
Dissenting opinion (which I agree) starts on page 148 of the PDF: https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/21pdf/19-1392_6j37.pdf
pcj-github··on Supreme Court Overturns Roe vs. Wade
Agree 100%
pcj-github··on Deno raises $21M
Comments are a bit negative. I for one think they are onto something here. Surprised it's only 21M. I would have expected in these market conditions to beef up more for the next 2-3 years.
pcj-github··on GitHub Copilot is generally available
The free thing for (a few) open-source maintainers seems needlessly complicated... Who should qualify is non-transparent. They'd have been better off just charging everyone for it. Not an instant buy for me for the moment. Often it works well, but it also frequently takes time to correct/sort-out the suggestions. It might in fact be making me dumber as I wait for a suggestion rather than thinking it out.
pcj-github··on Three Arrows Capital reportedly facing insolvency
Turns out that tightly wrapping a small kernel of nothing with many layers of leverage can turn into a bomb that will blow up in your face.
pcj-github··on Fresh – Next-gen web framework
Excited about this!

Docs should include obvious link to github repo: https://github.com/lucacasonato/fresh (edit: it's already in the footer)

Also, deno/x needs an update: https://deno.land/x/deno_fresh

pcj-github··on When I First Saw Elon Musk for Who He Is
The whole Musk charade seems to be starting to crumble. Personally when I see folks driving teslas I can't divorce it from my image of him, and I end up having a negative opinion of that tesla driver I don't even know (why would they follow / prop up this guy?). I suspect tesla may go the way of facebook... One generation loved it, but for young people they run the other way.

Sad part is that tesla has some of the smartest, most hardworking engineers in the industry... absolutely top-notch. But, the reason they chose that job was due to a belief in the mission, of doing good in this world. I can't help but think those people are having second thoughts about working at tesla now that people are starting to recognize Musk actually is a bad smell.

pcj-github··on Tether Withdrawals Top $10B
Every article I read about this says something like "Unlike tether, UST wasn’t backed by fiat currency held in a reserve".

Which assumes tether is actually backed by enough real value to cover its calls in the case of a selloff, which it absolutely is not.

If I had any money in crypto (I don't), I would get the hell out of tether ASAP.

pcj-github··on The math prodigy whose hack upended DeFi won’t return funds
Indexed gets no sympathy from me; guy exploits a bug in the code. Awfully predictable that these would-be DeFi fanboys go crying to a centralized legal authority when things don't go their way.
pcj-github··on How Uber Uses Zig
I recall reading https://andrewkelley.me/post/zig-cc-powerful-drop-in-replace... as well and thinking this would be great to integrate with Bazel for hermetic cross-compile of go/cgo. Great to see they actually went and did it! Will definitely be trying this.
pcj-github··on How Albania Became a Pyramid Scheme
Sounds like crypto in this day
pcj-github··on SQLite in Go, with and Without Cgo
Good to know the pure go one has acceptable performance for most workloads.
pcj-github··on JavaScript Containers
Ryan Dahl is totally on-point here. It's one of those things that will be obvious in 10 years or less. Only SASS providers need bother with linux containers or "real" operating systems, the vast majority of everything else will be glued together over emerging runtimes like Deno/CFW, HTTP, and WASM.
pcj-github··on Teen mental health is plummeting and social media is a major contributing cause [pdf]
It is so obvious to any parent with a child in this age group the harm that phones and social media have done. My daughter, now 15, is on anxiety meds and scars up and down her arm from cutting. I'm an MD that crossed over to tech, but my earlier profession (vascular surgery) largely involved taking care of the wreckage that the tobacco industry wrought upon society. The parallels here are obvious and striking. The spell under which society was either ignorant or in denial (via advertising) about the harms of smoking in 1950 is very similar to what we have today.

1. More research needs to be done to solidify the data on what is pretty obviously happening, but we can't wait on the data to take action (it will be important for the lawsuits though).

2. We need regulation that forces these apps to only be able to execute for something like 2 hours in a 24-hour period before being sandboxed and shut off. They aren't mission-critical, nobody "needs" instagram more than this other than Meta. These kids need a break, and to breathe.

3. We need a large educational investment, quickly, to get people to understand the harmful combination of social media, device usage, and puberty. The comments in this thread make this readily apparent... The number of "but, but, but" and "whatabout" comments is pretty astounding here.

4. Social media companies must be litigated for knowingly and willingly doing this. Class-action lawsuits, in the many billions of dollars. The behavior of these companies will not change otherwise.

pcj-github··on Show HN: PostgresML, now with analytics and project management
I found this to be very confusing and took some sorting out that this is not an official project of postgresql. I personally think a name change and logo redo is in order here.
pcj-github··on I stopped working on black hole information loss
On the contrary, the near-final state of a black hole at EOL might be quite weak in energy.
pcj-github··on I stopped working on black hole information loss
If a "real" (big) black hole takes billions of years to evaporate, what does it look like just before it's about to die? (and completely evaporate). Why is this "tiny black hole" not possible to reproduce experimentally? (is it?)
pcj-github··on Netlify Edge Functions: A new serverless runtime powered by Deno
Does this complement or compete with Deno Deploy?
pcj-github··on Tell HN: Turned 44 today and I'm lost
Most of your intuitions are probably correct. You probably are past your zenith, and it probably is a slow decline from here. Your life probably doesn't have much real meaning. In fact, it's likely that none of us here really do.

So get over it. You still won the lottery in this universe in that you ever existed in the first place. Make the best of what remains.

pcj-github··on Lebanese turn to cryptocurrency as economy tanks
This seems backwards. In a country where there is a shortage of energy, they are using it to run bitcoin mining operations? Lord help us.
pcj-github··on An update on recent service disruptions
Lots of people commenting here about how easy it must be to shard mysql at GitHub scale...
