pcj-github··on Show HN: Meet.hn – Meet the Hacker News community in your city
I like this.

I know this might sound petty, but the thing preventing me from signing up is your comfort level dispersing information through x.com. You said "meet.hn has a twitter page", but sadly, twitter is dead and has been replaced by something sinister. I can't support them, even tangentially.

pcj-github··on Parsing Protobuf Definitions with Tree-sitter
From the docs "The protocol compiler can output a FileDescriptorSet containing the .proto files it parses." (https://github.com/protocolbuffers/protobuf/blob/main/src/go...)

I don't understand the point of using tree-sitter to repeat that work (almost certainly having bugs doing so). Am I missing something?

pcj-github··on gRPC: The Bad Parts
FWIW I never worked at Google and I used protobuf / gRPC extensively at work and in nearly all of my side projects. Personally, I think overall it's great. I do wish trailers were an optional feature though.
pcj-github··on GPT-4o
The thing that creeps me out is that when we hook this up as the new Siri or whatever, the new LLM training data will no longer be WWW-text+images+youtube etc but rather billions of private human conversations and direct smartphone camera observations of the world.

There is no way that kind of training data will be accessible to anyone outside a handful of companies.

pcj-github··on Losing my son
What a gifted writer.

A very close friend of mine's brother was bicyling back home after his first year of college and was struck by a drunk driver, he was left in a vegetative state for about 8 years before finally passing from urinary complications. The father, also a creative person, wrote "In the Line of Fire", if you ever saw that film with Clint Eastwood. They said it was the worst and best thing to ever happen to them; I still don't understand what it means.

pcj-github··on Stable Video Diffusion
Soon the hollywood strike won't even matter, won't need any of those jobs. Entire west coast economy obliterated.
pcj-github··on Billing Engines Don't Solve Pricing Problems
I'm working on an internal pricing service that interacts with Azure. I'm not looking to use this service since I certainly would not want to create yet another external dependency, but will agree that pricing can be complex. For example, I was a bit shocked that there are over 450,000 individual things that Azure can charge you for.
pcj-github··on The Techno-Optimist Manifesto
This suggests to me that Marc Andressen struggles with bipolar disease. This blog post reeks like the tailings of a manic episode.

Was he not able to find anyone to bounce this off before pressing "publish"?

pcj-github··on Making Hard Things Easy
Every time a jnvs.ca article goes popular on HN I have to relive the trauma of my Stripe interview with Julia where I just could not get that simple test to pass despite having years of programming experience. Ugh! She was nice though :)
pcj-github··on Twitter has officially changed its logo to ‘X’
Well, I'm gone. Just deactivated my account. So done with literally anything that smells like Musk.
pcj-github··on Understanding DeepMind's sorting algorithm
https://github.com/github-drama/github-drama/pull/46
pcj-github··on Get Phones Out of Schools Now
I would really like to see level four and five implemented at all public schools.
pcj-github··on Google DeepMind
Will Google stop sharing progress in foundational AI research to it's competitors now?
pcj-github··on Protobuffers Are Wrong (2018)
"They’re clearly written by amateurs, unbelievably ad-hoc, mired in gotchas, tricky to compile, and solve a problem that nobody but Google really has."

Quite a statement from someone that spent less than a year at Google.

Personally I really appreciate protobuf; it has saved me and teams I've worked with a ton of time and effort.

Putting this article on my ignore list.

pcj-github··on Zed, the new code editor from Atom developers, has entered open beta
Impressive start. What's the story on extensions / plugins? How are the existing languages supported? (LSP?)
pcj-github··on The fall of SVB and how I tried to save as many straps as I could
The story would be even more compelling if the author referred to himself in the third person.
pcj-github··on Git branches are named sequences of commits
A git branch is a text file containing a single sha1 value and a newline. Pretty sure the author can't tell me the named sequence of commits given that information.
pcj-github··on A spellchecker used to be a major feat of software engineering (2008)
Actually there's way more to it than loading /usr/share/dict/words into a perl hashtable and calling it done. A good spellchecker from scratch is still a massive engineering effort in 2023.
pcj-github··on WebContainer API
This looks really cool (I love anything with a filesystem API), but I'm unclear on the role of hosted proxies in this setup. Also, the licensing costs aren't clear.

"WebContainers rely on hosted proxies and server-side acceleration to enable truly instant development environments. By obtaining a WebContainer API license, your business can gain access to higher API rate limits, uptime reliability, and a range of benefits designed to help you maximize the potential of the WebContainer API in your organization."

pcj-github··on My Salary History
Hmm, I don't think you know Colorado too well. Senior level dev makes about 2-3x of OP.
pcj-github··on Show HN: Open-source OAuth service for 40+ APIs
Worth mentioning: https://docs.nango.dev/nango-deploy/oss-limitations

To keep the setup of the Nango open source version simple we have made some choices that may not be ideal for production. Please take them into consideration before using it in production:

The database is bundled in the docker container with transient storage. This means that updating the Docker image causes configs/credentials loss. We recommend that you connect Nango to a production DB that lives outside the docker setup to mitigate this.

Credentials are not encrypted at rest and stored in plain text

No authentication by default

No SSL setup by default

The setup is not optimized for scaling

Updating the provider templates requires an update of the docker containers

pcj-github··on Git archive generation meets Hyrum's law
If it can't be made stable, `git archive` should specifically add random content (under a feature flag to be removed after a year or two) to so as to make the generated checksum completely unreliable and force users to adopt different workflows.
pcj-github··on I lost $209k of my own money trying to start a business
The travel startup is pretty much a meme at this point. If your target user only needs your app once every few years, it's going to be really hard. An early discussion with any half-rate angel or venture capitalist would have been a useful exercise.
pcj-github··on Git archive checksums may change
Thanks!

pcj-github··on Why we need to know LR and recursive descent parsing techniques
As a self-taught programmer with no formal education, I figured writing a lexer/parser toolkit would be a good way to bootstrap my CS knowledge (about 20 years ago). I went down the rabbit hole for months on it, really glad I did.

I can totally relate to the authors interest in error correction of LR parsers, it's a fascinating topic that I also was nerd-sniped by at the time: https://github.com/inxar/syntacs/blob/6461578a04d3b0fda5af20...

pcj-github··on The Buy and Hold Mindset
Seeing your net worth go down by billions is probably a decent motivator to write a blog post hinting to the market that prices look real good now.
pcj-github··on .bestbuy
The question wasn't "what's nic mean?", it was "is buying your own top level domain going to be the new normal?" Presumably if you have enough cash, I'd say yes.
pcj-github··on Hey, GitHub – Waiting list signup
I could see it being useful for things like "goto line 42" or "rename this file as...", or very simple things like that, otherwise, I don't want the cognitive overhead of having to translate coding intent through a voice interpreter.
pcj-github··on Twitter to start layoffs -internal email
I'm going to call B.S. on this one. with SpaceX and Tesla, many employees are driven by a sense of purpose independent of the behavior of their shared/part-time CEO based on the fundamental mission of the company. In Twitter's case, I doubt the notion of whipping engineers to making more advertising revenue via blue check marks is going to rouse a sense of pride, purpose, or productivity. I guess we'll see!
