pbiggar··on A Facebook Insider's Exposé Alleges Bad Behavior at the Top
I'm referring to Israel's invasion of Palestine, which in this specific instance started on October 9, 2023 or so, and resulted in the total destruction of Gaza, and the direct killing of 60,000, and the indirect killing of possibly 300,000.

This is the invasion that had more bombs dropped on Gazan civilians than were dropped in the entire Afghanistan war. And one in which Israeli snipers repeatedly shot and killed children, doctors, and journalists.

I was not specifically referring to Israel's 17 year blockade of Gaza, during which it destroyed their airport, port, and control the water supply and electricity, which it has currently cut off, a severe war crime.

Nor am I specifically referring to Israel's invasion of the West Bank, currently happening, where Israel has recently stolen more land than all the land it stole since the Oslo accords.

Nor am I specifically referring to Israel's brutal domination of Palestine since its invasion in 1948, during which European refugees drove 750,000 native Palestinians from their homes, stealing their land and massacring over 15,000 in a series of brutal attacks.

Yes, that is the mechanism of how the suppression is pushed internally. For details of the actual suppression, see these reports / documentaries:

Another source of allegations about the behaviour at Meta comes from 7amleh's report on how they systematically suppressed what Americans and others were allowed see about Israel's invasion of Palestine.

A similar product is Boycat - https://boycat.io. AFAIK they are adding a campaign focused on the US since the US started adding tarifs everywhere. Would love to see them adding something for the EU side of things.
pbiggar··on Bye, Prime
Bray says he doesn't think amazon is any more objectionable than is mandated by capitalism. Perhaps he's right. But their participation in the genocide in Gaza should be objectionable by any definition. It's clear that Israel would not have been able to completely destroy Gaza and kill probably [1] 100,000s of people without the cloud tools provided by Amazon (and Google and Microsoft) [2]

[1] Numbers you've heard like 40,000, reflect only the absolute minimum number of people killed directly by Israel, and not those killed indirectly (running out of insulin, starving, etc). https://data.techforpalestine.org/updates/gaza-ministry-casu...

pbiggar··on Intel ruined an Israeli startup it bought for $2B–and lost the AI race
My understanding is that the Intel management, especially former CEO Pat Geislinger, are ideological supporters of Israel [1], and that they have repeatedly made decisions to prop up bad investments in Israel because of that ideology.

One of those decisions was to put an Intel factory on the land of a Palestinian village that had been ethnically cleansed by Israel during the 1948 Nakba.

Another was to announce in Dec 2023, at a time when Israel was losing international support due to what was becoming internationally recognized as a genocide, that it was about to invest $25B in a new factory in Israel [2]. Intel investors were not happy and Intel was made to reverse this decision.

pbiggar··on Google drops pledge not to use AI for weapons or surveillance
I didn't say Google developed Lavender. The article describes how AI is used by Israel in the genocide. On what cloud platform does Google's military run?

pbiggar··on TikTok goes dark in the US
The "aggressively weaponized in currently very active grey zone conflicts" sounds very very scary! Do you actually mean that young Americans are using it to teach each other about the US-enabled Israeli occupation of Palestine?
pbiggar··on EFF statement on U.S. Supreme Court's decision to uphold TikTok ban
The shutdown is entirely because TikTok wouldn't suppress content about Palestine.
pbiggar··on Facebook deletes internal employee criticism of new board member Dana White
Meta is making their own decisions, eg their "Zionism as proxy" policy, disabling the Columbia SJP account, or disabling reach for political speech. It should be straightforward for their employees to voice disagreement with this, and Meta has had a famously open attitude about this until just a few years ago.
pbiggar··on Facebook deletes internal employee criticism of new board member Dana White
Meta's internal CEE team also deleted a lot of internal employee criticism of Meta's censorship of Palestinian content and other anti-Palestinian policies. Well discussed in the 7amleh report (start on page 15 https://7amleh.org/storage/Advocacy%20Reports/Delete%20the%2...)
pbiggar··on What's happening with founders over 40?
Another option is to put that experience to good use. I just turned 43, I should probably have retired. But instead I founded Tech for Palestine, doing whatever we can to help end the oppression on Palestinians by Israel. Hard tiring work, but it feels like a good leverage for all those skills I spent my 20s and 30s building. Maybe that perspective will change once I have kids, which is in slated for the next few years.

pbiggar··on How to Reach Angel Investors in the San Francisco Area for Agentic AI Startup?
I think you might misunderstand what I'm saying. An introduction is an email. If you already knew that, then you either misunderstand how the game is played, or your friends won't introduce you because they don't believe in what you're building.
pbiggar··on How to Reach Angel Investors in the San Francisco Area for Agentic AI Startup?
Make friends with other entrepreneurs. Impress them and ask them for intros to their investors. If you're good, and your product is good, they'll want to introduce you as it looks good for them.
pbiggar··on I Don't Have Spotify
It has shareholders which benefit from killing people, and who benefit more from war proliferating. How do you think that turns out in the long run? How has it turned out for Ukraine?

War companies sell war, and they sell it to evil people (see Israel's apartheid and genocide in Gaza). The privatization of war is bad for everybody.

pbiggar··on I Don't Have Spotify
Love it! Even since Spotify CEO Daniel Ek's investment company invested $100m into weapons tech, we've been looking at how to move off his platform.

pbiggar··on Smarter Than 'Ctrl+F': Linking Directly to Web Page Content
I use these for footnotes, eg in [1] which had a lot of footnotes. Ghost and other blogs don't support footnoting well afaict. Sometimes I miss restructured text, which did this quite well, markdown alas does not.

pbiggar··on Show HN: I made a URL expander because short links are too mainstream
The challenge with scaling a url _shortener_ is that multiple urls might end up with the same short url. That presents a scaling challenge where you have to deliberately design a coordination framework across your set of machines, which introduces coordination, a DB, prefixes, and all your favorite answers to the interview question de-jour of the late 2010s.

With a URL _lengthener_ though, you don't need it at all. The sheer amount of possible outcomes means that the odds of ever getting two of the same is infinitesimally tiny.

pbiggar··on UK will give sovereignty of Chagos Islands to Mauritius
> The remaining British overseas territories are: Anguilla, Bermuda, British Antarctic Territory, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Falkland Islands, Gibraltar, Montserrat, Pitcairn, Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, Turks and Caicos Islands. There are also two sovereign base areas on Cyprus under British jurisdiction.

Good note at the end

pbiggar··on Iran just launched over 400 ballistic missiles at Israel
Though to be clear, that apartheid is an example of a lack of democracy.
pbiggar··on Y Combinator Traded Prestige for Growth
Until we actually have controls to protect against excessive force, which we patently do not and have never had, building better weapons will always be used against civilians to commit attrocities.

Right now, we ignore the controls we do have. The US is not supposed to provide weapons to anyone violating human rights, which Israel is very obviously doing, as is agreed universally outside the US. But we still provide them with weapons as they are our "allies". While this is the case, de facto any better weapons we build are used to commit "better" crimes against humanity.

pbiggar··on Y Combinator Traded Prestige for Growth
There are 40,000 people killed in Gaza by US weapons, in what even Biden called "indiscriminate bombing". YC should not be making cheaper ways for our allies to commit genocide.
