pbiggar··on PSF has withdrawn $1.5M proposal to US Government grant program
The Trump administration is definitively coming after 501c3s. I run a nonprofit and all the movement around us has been preparing for this since these laws were first announced. Ironcically, the laws to investigate nonprofits were first proposed under the Biden administration to attack the Palestine movement, and like most things in the Palestine movement, they were quickly turned against the rest of the country.

pbiggar··on Why SSA?
Oh for sure, I was agreeing with you. The target audience is academics.

For non-experts, I love "Engineering a Compiler" by Cooper and Torczon.

pbiggar··on Why SSA?
I don't think it really explains what it's for though. Here's my explanation (from my PhD thesis on compilers):

Static single assignment (SSA) form provides an efficient intermediate representation for program analysis [Cytron et al., 1989, 1991]. It was introduced as a way of efficiently representing dataflow analyses.

SSA uses a single key idea: that all variables in the program are renamed so that each variable is assigned a value at a single unique statement in the program. From this key idea, SSA is able to provide a number of advantages over other techniques of dataflow analyses:

Factored use-def chain: With a def-use chain, dataflow results may be propagated directly from the assignment of a variable to all of its uses. However, a def-use chain requires an edge from each definition to each use, which may be expensive when a program has many definitions and uses of the same variable. In practice, this occurs in the presence of switch-statements. SSA factors the def-use chain over a φ-node, avoiding this pathological case.

Flow-sensitivity: A flow-insensitive algorithm performed on an SSA form is much more precise than if SSA form were not used. The flow-insensitive problem of multiple definitions to the same variable is solved by the single assignment property. The allows a flow-insensitive algorithm to approach the precision of a flow-sensitive algorithm.

Memory usage: Without SSA form, an analysis must store information for every variable at every program point. SSA form allows a sparse analysis, where an analysis must store information only for every assignment in the program. With a unique version per assignment, the memory usage of storing the results of an analysis can be considerably lower than using bit-vector or set-based approaches.

pbiggar··on Why SSA?
I was involved in making the book. It is very much a book for academics, and came out of an academic conference bringing together people working at the forefront of SSA-based research.
pbiggar··on Internet's biggest annoyance: Cookie laws should target browsers, not websites
The cookie laws make it so that web sites have to ask permission to track you, surveil you, sell your data, etc. And surprise, almost every website wants to track you, surveil you, and sell you data. The EU should have just banned the unethical behaviour, the middle ground of every single website asking for unethical tracking is a travesty.
pbiggar··on Why more SaaS companies are hiring chief trust officers
Remember to always ask if your Trust officer was in the IDF.
pbiggar··on You won't believe what degrading practice the pope just condemned
It's interesting to see the media focus on this part of the pope's speech. Part of the degradation of journalism in the media is choosing which narratives to tell.

In the Vatican's press release on this story [1], they started with journalists in Gaza and Ukraine [2]. In fact the image they used for the story was a journalist in Gaza with blood on their camera. They continued [3] with the political attacks on journalists, such as those by Trump and Netanyahu [4], among others.

That the Guardian, alongside a lot of major media, turned this into a joke tells us a lot about how media chooses to shape the stories they tell us. Another example of the Guardian manipulating stories comes from how they report on Ukraine vs Gaza, for example in https://www.instagram.com/p/DPOhhduDALe/.

[1] https://www.vaticannews.va/en/pope/news/2025-10/pope-journal...

[2] 'Pope Leo on Thursday paid homage to journalists who are working on the front lines of conflict. “If today we know what is happening in Gaza, Ukraine, and every other land bloodied by bombs, we largely owe it to them.”'

[3] In light of this, the Pope reiterated his long-standing appeal for the release of journalists who have been unjustly detained or persecuted. "Doing the work of a journalist can never be considered a crime," he insisted. "It is a right that must be protected."

pbiggar··on Vercel CEO meets with Netanyahu to discuss AI education
Folks, this is an indicted war criminal, who is committing an internationally recognized genocide. And Vercel CEO is shaking his hand and supporting him.

I feel like I'm losing my mind here.

pbiggar··on Netanyahu meets with influencers to discuss using social media as a weapon
For politicians, yes. Many are bribed by AIPAC and have directly participated in this. The people are not so happy, and many are noticing.
pbiggar··on Netanyahu meets with influencers to discuss using social media as a weapon
"We're going to have to use the tools of battle. The weapons change over time. [...] And the most important ones are with social media. And the most important purchase that is going on right now is Tiktok. Number 1. Number 1. And I hope it goes through because it can be consequential."
pbiggar··on Netanyahu meets with influencers to discuss using social media as a weapon
In this video, Netanyahu also discusses in pretty straightforward terms how taking over Tiktok is strategic for him.
pbiggar··on TikTok Sold for $14B
Incredible that this happened. AIPAC and the ADL targeted Tiktok because it didn't restrict Palestine content while the other social media did. And so the US Congress killed it. Absolutely incredible first amendment work from the Land of the Free.
pbiggar··on Microsoft blocks Israel’s use of its tech in mass surveillance of Palestinians
There was an interesting point in the earlier article on this, where Microsoft tried to push their Israeli employees under a bus. They claimed their Israeli employees had lied to them about the use of Azure for war and civilian harm because they held more allegiance to their army than to Microsoft.

Now obviously, this was a lie, but the implication is staggering: Microsoft can't trust it's own employees in Israel, and believes they're lying to the mothership! And if microsoft can't trust them, surely no one else should either!

pbiggar··on Delete FROM users WHERE location = 'Iran';
It's the phrasing. You're using a fun and casual term for something awful. You are correct about the amount of sexual assault in American prison of course.
pbiggar··on Count Folke Bernadotte: Sweden's Servant of Peace (2010)
The Stern gang, who killed him, became the IDF (along with the Haganah and the Irgun). These groups performed the ethnic cleansing of Palestine that allowed Israel to be built on Palestinian land (commonly known as the Nakba).

> One of the chief organisers of the assassination was Yitzhak Shamir, who became Israel’s prime minister in 1984.

Exactly.

pbiggar··on When Knowing Someone at Meta Is the Only Way to Break Out of "Content Jail"
This is exactly what happened to people speaking up about the genocide in Gaza. 7amleh documented this in multiple reports [1][2][3]. See also [4]

Wondering where the EFF was for that issue?

pbiggar··on Defense.gov Now Redirects to War.gov
Interesting. That does match what we've seen. Interesting his use of the word "terrorists" - they also use this word to describe the resistance against Israel's oppression. Truly a multi-faceted word that can be used to justify any crime against humanity!
pbiggar··on Defense.gov Now Redirects to War.gov
They don't declare war anymore if they can avoid it. Being at war comes with obligations and consequences, so they prefer to drone strike Yemen and Gaza without declaring war
pbiggar··on Formatting code should be unnecessary
This is how darklang works as well.
pbiggar··on ICE obtains access to Israeli-made spyware that hack phones and encrypted apps
So the question is whether Israel is a democracy. If a state both maintains an occupation and denies the occupied population political rights, then it is not democratic (even if the dominant ethnic group and some others are allowed to vote).

At its core, democracy requires political equality. The governed people must have a meaningful say in who governs them and how. That is not present in Palestine due to Israeli occupation.

It allows Israelis to vote, including Jewish settlers in occupied territories, but it does not allow occupied Palestinians (many of whom live right next to settlers) to vote.

pbiggar··on ICE obtains access to Israeli-made spyware that hack phones and encrypted apps
Hardly a democracy when it occupies Palestine, and Palestinians can't vote in Israeli elections.
pbiggar··on Show HN: Amber – better Beeper, a modern all-in-one messenger
Would love you to add Signal, as well as DMs in Instagram, Twitter, Bluesky, LinkedIn.
pbiggar··on Colleges see significant drop in international students as fall semester begins
Not surprising. There are 3 main causes here:

- general anti-immigrant attitudes, policies, and policing (ICE)

- deportations of students exercising free speech rights (to criticize Israel)

- forcing colleges to change policies (again, to protect Israel from criticism by students and student groups)

pbiggar··on Ask HN: The government of my country blocked VPN access. What should I use?
There's a new VPN that you might try, built by Boycat.

https://www.boycat.io/vpn

Don't know if it will help in this situation as it's designed to be a VPN not controlled by Israel, but it might be worth a try.

pbiggar··on What happens when ambassadors are summoned by the host country?
I just watched something about this (I don't know the channel so I'm unclear on the accuracy here) - see the second half of the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LT_0IxVKGsQ

Summary: Netanyahu threatened Australian Prime Minister Albanese, and Albanese capitulated quickly.

pbiggar··on What happens when ambassadors are summoned by the host country?
Interesting the story that led to this question. France has said that it will recognize Palestine, and so the US ambassador wrote a letter falsely accusing the French of antisemitism for recognizing Palestine.
pbiggar··on Sequoia backs Zed
Hard to take their Code of Conduct seriously anymore https://zed.dev/code-of-conduct
pbiggar··on Left to Right Programming
Incidentally, Darklang had this built into the language/editor combo from the start. You can see it in the examples on our youtube, maybe this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQpBG9WkGus

To make a long story short, we added features for "incomplete" programs in the language and tools, so that your program was always valid and could not be invalid. It was a reasonable concept, and I think could have been a game changer if AI didn't first change the game.

pbiggar··on Show HN: Occupied Tech Podcast, episode 1: Microsoft [video]
