pbiggar··on GLM-4.7: Advancing the Coding Capability
Looking forward to getting these new models on Thaura.
pbiggar··on Israel used Palantir technologies in pager attack in Lebanon
In my opinion, it's important to call out extreme abhorrent behaviour. A disregard of international humanitarian law and human rights qualifies imo.
pbiggar··on UK Government plans new powers to label dissenting movements as 'subversion'
There are people murdered in pubs. People are raped at festivals. those are awful, similar with striking someone with a sledgehammer. Should we shut down all pubs, or all festivals? No. All protests? Also no. Even all protests about one particular group? No.
pbiggar··on Paramount launches hostile bid for Warner Bros
Yes you can donate (why did you add the word "directly"?). It just passes through intermediary organizations, such as the Friends of the IDF. There are even non profits that pay for "lone soldiers" -- international mercenaries -- to take part in the genocide in Gaza. Hundreds of thousands of "lone soldiers" took part, I believe something like 20,000 came from the US alone.
pbiggar··on It’s time to free JavaScript (2024)
Important to remember Oracle is one of the most evil tech companies, and Larry Ellison is your prototypical evil villain. Oracle CEO Catz recently said "We are not flexible regarding our mission, and our commitment to Israel is second to none" and "if they don't agree with our mission to support the State of Israel, then maybe we aren't the right company for them".
pbiggar··on UK Government plans new powers to label dissenting movements as 'subversion'
In almost no cases has someone supported a terrorist group or advocated for violence. They're literally just taking lists provided by Israeli extremists and deporting them.
pbiggar··on UK Government plans new powers to label dissenting movements as 'subversion'
I can't tell or not, but are you aware that the US has deported/arrested thousands of people for their social media posts?
pbiggar··on UK Government plans new powers to label dissenting movements as 'subversion'
Because there are huge protests in the UK at the moment for Palestine, which led them to "proscribe" the group Palestine Action. Then everyone (correctly) freaked out about civil liberties, and you can now see videos of grannies being arrested by the UK police for having an "i support Palestine Action" sign multiple times a week.
pbiggar··on UK Government plans new powers to label dissenting movements as 'subversion'
If the UK shut down everything that was related to occasional violence, there wouldn't be a pub left in England.
pbiggar··on Norway wealth fund to vote for human rights report at Microsoft, against Nadella
If you'd like to know more about Microsoft's human rights issues, I had a lead campaigner discuss it with me on my podcast

pbiggar··on Norway wealth fund to vote for human rights report at Microsoft, against Nadella
It's relevant because Microsoft, like all big companies, have Human Rights Pricinples and such that are part of the company. It's basically impossible to get big institutional investment without it.

The issue is that they were caught not following their practices, and then lying about it. So the shareholders are asking that they produce a report about whether they are following their own human rights principles.

And Satya is resisting it, because it is very clear that they are not following them, as workers [1] have been calling out for years now. Many leaked documents have shown that Microsoft actually embeds employees directly with the IDF and makes millions in service contracts with them. [2]

pbiggar··on Norway wealth fund to vote for human rights report at Microsoft, against Nadella
Since it doesn't say it in the article, the human rights they're referring to is that Microsoft was caught providing Azure services to the Israeli army's unit 8200, which used them to surveil millions of hours of Palestinian calls.

Microsoft, Google, Amazon and Palantir are all providing cloud and AI services to Israel which it uses it the genocide in Gaza and the continued military occupation of Palestine.

pbiggar··on Silicon Valley's man in the White House is benefiting himself and his friends
The second I saw this I new it was David Sacks.
pbiggar··on The Nerd Reich – Silicon Valley Fascism and the War on Democracy
Fair point so let me qualify that. Among the fairly mainstream US left, who have put significant work into documenting and pushing back against the rise of tech oligarchs, Gil Duran is well respected.
pbiggar··on The Nerd Reich – Silicon Valley Fascism and the War on Democracy
This is real. Gil Duran is extremely well respected among those of us who are against the fascist takeover of Silicon Valley, which has been well-documented for quite some time.
pbiggar··on Your smartphone, their rules: App stores enable corporate-government censorship
Another way these app stores enable censorship is by having arcane and inscrutable review processes, where they often ban your app for no reason with no recourse (unless you know a Googler or Apple employee, who can investigate).

For example, we work with Aween Rayeh [1], an app that provides real-time traffic information about Israeli checkpoints in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. The author's account was banned for no reason at all on Google Play [2]. There was no means to get an appeal or a review.

What typically we see happening is that someone internally at these companies issues a ban for what we assume are ideological reasons. Then when someone looks into it there's no actual reason for the ban to have happened, and it sails through. We see similar thing with shadow banning on social media: someone gets hard flagged and their account is completely shut down, and then when someone looks into it, there was never a reason to do it in the first place.

pbiggar··on Fizz Buzz without conditionals or booleans
Simple solution using modulo arithmetic and arrays. Relies on python shorthands that hides implicit branches for the number case though.

    def main():
      fizz_array = ["Fizz", "", ""]
      buzz_array = ["Buzz", "", "", "", ""]

      for n in range(1, 101):
        # Use modulo to index into arrays
        f = fizz_array[n % 3]
        b = buzz_array[n % 5]

        # Combine fizz and buzz
        result = f + b

        output = result + str(n)[len(result):]

        print(output)

    main()

I couldn't figure out this line and had to rely on AI for it.

    output = result + str(n)[len(result):]
pbiggar··on Israeli-founded app preloaded on Samsung phones is attracting controversy
We're not basing on national origin, we're basing on specific participation in occupation, which is being done by the Israeli state and army.
pbiggar··on X removes translate function from Hebrew posts
I don't know about whether the feature was disabled, but there the absolute unhinged shit that people say in Hebrew is something that needs to be studied. Absolute cartoon evil shit.

7amleh documented it back in 2023: https://7amleh.org/post/7amleh-documents-19-000-violent-twee...

Law for Palestine also has a database of them: https://law4palestine.org/law-for-palestine-releases-databas...

pbiggar··on Israeli-founded app preloaded on Samsung phones is attracting controversy
In fact Elasticsearch was specifically mentioned as a partner of the "Gaza Humanitarian Foundation", a fake aid org who caused many Palestinians to be killed under their watch. (Elasticsearch denied involvement when I contacted them)

But to be more specific I would narrow it down to avoiding using any tech which Israel could use for surveillance, narrative control, or harm.

pbiggar··on Israeli-founded app preloaded on Samsung phones is attracting controversy
I added more context above to clarify the point I was making (which I thought would be self-evident, but I guess it was a bit more obscure than I thought)
pbiggar··on GPT-5.1: A smarter, more conversational ChatGPT
Why would that be a hard sell?
pbiggar··on GPT-5.1: A smarter, more conversational ChatGPT
I see. Well, let me explain what this is about.

AI models represent society, and society has significant biases against certain groups, which find their way into the AI. One of those groups is Palestinians. In fact, Israel is currently running an influence operation [1] to make AIs significantly pro-Israel (which means in many cases inserting an Israeli narrative to cover up their long history of Crimes Against Humanity against Palestine, including the current genocide, but also the apartheid in Occupied Palestine).

Existing AI companies have shown significant bias not just against Palestine, but against basic internationally understood principles of human rights, and indeed are cozying up to the US war machine in meaningful ways. Many people around the world do not trust any of these companies as a result.

Our Ethical tech alternatives, including https://thaura.ai, are built to provide an ecosystem of alternatives to the heavily-controlled tech companies, many of whom are directly complicit in the genocide in Gaza (eg Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Meta), and many of whom suppress pro-humanity narratives because of biases towards Israel (esp Meta, but also LinkedIn, Youtube, X).

Another example is https://upscrolled.com, which is an alternative to Instagram and X, against built on basic humanitarian principles (which IG and X do not adhere to).

Hope this helps!

pbiggar··on GPT-5.1: A smarter, more conversational ChatGPT
I assure you it's not a scam. We work with them heavily at Tech for Palestine. Will send over your feedback, thanks!

What would be helpful to assuage your fears? Would you like more technical info, or perhaps a description of the "biases" used?

pbiggar··on GPT-5.1: A smarter, more conversational ChatGPT
I've switched over to https://thaura.ai, which is working on being a more ethical AI. A side effect I hadn't realized is missing the drama over the latest OpenAI changes.
pbiggar··on AI adoption in US adds ~900k tons of CO₂ annually, study finds
There's ethical AI companies which are trying to reduce this, for example https://thaura.ai
pbiggar··on No Socials November
Non corporate and non-addictive social media doesn't really count. For example, Upscrolled [1] is an ethical social media that's doesn't aim to be addictive (among other ethical aspects). I don't think it's the same as being part of the dopamine machine like on IG.

pbiggar··on AWS to bare metal two years later: Answering your questions about leaving AWS
CircleCI - their version is CodeBuild.

Note: edited the comment above to use "copy" instead of "clone" to be more accurate.

pbiggar··on AWS to bare metal two years later: Answering your questions about leaving AWS
I'll add that Amazon execs told us to our face that they use your AWS usage to decide if they were going to copy your services (which they did in our case), so any dev or ops tool on AWS shouldn't be there anyway for competitive reason.
