paxys··on Norway should buy OpenAI
OpenAI is worth $800B because that’s what the last funding round valued it at. It does not mean that >50% of existing shareholders will agree to sell for that amount. If a serious buyer does emerge they will likely hold out for 2x that, maybe more.
paxys··on OpenAI disbanded the team that assessed catastrophic model risks
Read the article. No one is getting fired. They are being embedded within individual teams instead of having a separate org.
paxys··on Degraded performance for multiple models
Monthly uptime:

Claude API - 99.27%

Claude Code - 99.16%

Claude.ai - 99.14%

At any large tech company these numbers would get entire teams of engineers fired. Anthropic, meanwhile, has been busy selling its “better than human engineers” AI while not managing to crack three 9s of availability.

paxys··on What Happens If OpenAI Dies?
It’s far from vindication. All these TV networks have slots dedicated for extreme doomers to come in and say “the sky is falling! There’s going to be a recession soon. Sell everything!!” Been seeing it every day for 15 years now.
paxys··on What Happens If OpenAI Dies?
The article asserts that executives are leaving because they know OpenAI will fail and so their shares will be worthless soon. That’s a much more extreme read of the situation than the company simply being behind on some internal goals.
paxys··on What Happens If OpenAI Dies?
Not commenting on the rest of the piece but why is everyone assuming that OpenAI’s executive departures are all voluntary? Sam Altman has shown plenty of willingness to clean house among the top ranks in the past. He isn’t going to shy away from firing a revenue officer if targets aren’t being met.
paxys··on The Amazon tax
I feel at least in major urban areas Amazon’s delivery network is efficient enough that they have to artificially delay non-Prime orders. I order from Amazon only occasionally, and while sometimes there’s actual step-by-step tracking I’ll usually see no movement at all for 3+ days, and suddenly the item has dispatched from the warehouse and it is reaching my house in an hour.
paxys··on OpenAI disbanded the team that assessed catastrophic model risks
> OpenAI shut down its preparedness team at the end of July, the Financial Times reports. The team existed to work out whether OpenAI’s models posed catastrophic risks. It also designed the ways to contain them.

> The work has not disappeared. Responsibility now sits with senior staff inside existing teams, split by subject.

Seems pretty reasonable. Given everything that happened with Huggingface and similar incidents it’s clear that the team wasn’t doing shit.

paxys··on Google wins bankruptcy auction for Spirit Airlines emails, chats, documents
Talking like a middle management drone from a failed corporation is perfectly on brand for Google AI.
paxys··on Google wins bankruptcy auction for Spirit Airlines emails, chats, documents
> The data does not contain any personally identifiable information, according to a court filing by PJT Partners vice president Dylan Friesner, an investment banker for Spirit.

> The data will be "deidentified" — meaning that it won't be associated with individual people and the buyer agrees not to attempt to re-identify the users.

Sure, 100 million emails and 500 million chats totally won’t have any mention of customers. No employee has ever shared PII on email or chat. Their redaction is guaranteed to work correctly. Nothing to see here.

Is this captive audience not going to switch providers for a 50% discount? Especially when the effort is simply swapping one URL for another?
paxys··on My friends all hate AI; I just joined an AI startup
The electric motor was accepted only because horses and mules couldn’t protest. Every technological advancement throughout history that displaces humans has had massive pushback. AI is no different.
paxys··on India has paved the way for charging merchants a fee on UPI transactions
So a country of a billion+ people should reverse its very successful digitization efforts because a handful of tourists can’t be bothered to pay a small surcharge?

Smaller, in fact, than what they pay in their own country for credit card fees.

paxys··on GPT-5.6 Sol Pricing Cut by 50%
I don’t think there’s a real answer for this. Margin depends on whatever number the accounting department wants to make up.

Do you include research and training costs? Of all models or only the ones being served? What percent of the R&D budget do you allocate to inference? What about data center capacity? Do you count future commitments? All the circular financing deals? Do you count employee equity grants as costs? At what valuation?

Which raises the question - who is subsidizing this, and why?
paxys··on An update on leaving Gmail for Fastmail
> Going and updating my accounts with a new address was easier than I was expecting

Is this really true? Out of the probably many hundreds of online accounts I use I can think of very few that actually let you change the underlying email (which in almost ever case is the username) without having to create a brand new account.

paxys··on We Tracked a Shipment of Rare Books. It Ended at an Amazon AI Training Facility
Well in this case the original owner doesn’t know, the purchaser doesn’t know, the reporter doesn’t know, you and I don’t know. So what actually makes these books rare?
paxys··on We Tracked a Shipment of Rare Books. It Ended at an Amazon AI Training Facility
Is it a “loophole” that you can buy something and burn it? That’s how property ownership works. If the books were really so rare and valuable then the original owner should have given them to a museum rather than sell them as scrap. Yet no one who is complaining right now cared about them before Amazon got involved.
paxys··on We Are Forking dotenvy into dotenv-ng
It’s an open source project, so you don’t have to wish it.

“Hey dotenvy team, I’m a fan of your project and wanted to help out. I noticed that some of your announcements are AI generated, and would like to help bring back the human voice. I’ll be happy to proof read and/or write your blog posts and release announcements in the future. Let me know if this is something you could use.”

So the proposed "strategy" is – don't do it, and ask others nicely not to do it. Good luck with that.

paxys··on Codex in ChatGPT desktop app for Linux is now in preview
It’s only remarkable if they actually took 6 months of engineering effort to build this. It’s more likely that it just never got prioritized.
