paustint··on Google Assistant will lose 17 features in the coming weeks
I looked through the features and they are all very obscure things that I have never used and likely never used by 99% of users. E.x. Who wants to send an email through the smart speaker?
paustint··on Apple unveils M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max
Seriously.... My 16gb MacBook pro M1 work machine runs out of memory constantly. I had a MacBook air 8gb and it was useless, it would freeze constantly and have crackly audio. I found that 24GB ram is really the minimum that is usable on M-series when doing any type of basic work.

Likely an output of so many electron based apps which are memory hungry, but if the memory is supposedly "really fast" then I would expect better performance. Never had the issue with Intel.

But with a nice bit or memory, the performance is really nice.

paustint··on I built Excel for Uber and they ditched it
At one point in the article there is a photograph of a chair in the uber hallway and a caption indicating that the couch in the picture (or one similar to it) was where most of the work was done for this project.
paustint··on “WebAssembly runtimes will replace container-based runtimes by 2030”
WASM is not just a browser technology, it can be (and is heavily) used for edge and servers.

I can write code once and run on many runtimes across many different programming languages.

I think the server use-cases are actually more compelling than the browser use-cases.

For example, Fastly's edge compute supports running WASM code at the edge. Similar to lambda, but in the language of your choice and with great sandboxing qualities baked in.

paustint··on Ask HN: Scrolling Window Manager for macOS?
I have no idea about answers to your question, and this may not be useful at all to you, but find I am very productive using spectacle[0] for window sizing and multi-monitor window arrangement.

cmd+tab to change applications (like on every OS), but also cmd+~ on macos to change windows within active application (e.x. cycle through all web browser windows)

I don't use multi workspaces at all, so sorry if this comment isn't useful, but thought I would throw it out there just in case.

paustint··on Heavier cars are safer for their drivers, but far deadlier for everyone else
We have had big cars for a really long time. Look back to the 70s, the cars then were called "boats" because they were huge and they had a lot more steel than current cars. Yes, I agree, more people are favoring SUVs and trucks than prior generations, but huge cars have been around for decades.

I recently purchased a 79 Lincoln Continental Mark V and it is that same length as my 2020 F150 - 40 year spread, same size vehicle.

People need to drive safe and not be stupid behind the wheel. I would guess that cell phone use while driving kills way more people than "big vehicles" do (most of us are guilty of this). I feel it is a technology+cultural issue.

paustint··on TC39 Proposal: Type Annotations
The confusing thing is that even though we have all been writing import statements in Typescript, that is not the same as ESM. Now, even though we all think we have been using ESM, when libraries only export ESM our tools/build chains are not compatible.

This episode isn't 100% current, but still relevant and discusses this issue: https://changelog.com/jsparty/137

paustint··on GoDaddy Cert and Chrome Update = Net:Err_certificate_transparency_required
No issues there for me. Also clear on crt.sh https://crt.sh/?q=5E+7E+34+26+F0+DB+84+8F+53+5D+3E+A5+63+B2+...

Safari works, but cannot access bitbucket.org in Chrome.

paustint··on GoDaddy Cert and Chrome Update = Net:Err_certificate_transparency_required
Yeah, noticed it with Bitbucket and Sendgrid - cannot access their websites from Chrome.
paustint··on Ask HN: What are some tools / libraries you built yourself?
I work on the Salesforce platform and got annoyed at how long it took to do basic dev/admin type tasks and all the existing tools are horrible or outrageously expensive and slow, so I built https://getjetstream.app/ which includes a lot of admin/dev type tools (query builder, data loader, api explorer, anon apex with syntax highlighting).

I also built a supporting tool to parse SOQL queries to support Jetsream because everything open source was broken and really sucked. https://paustint.github.io/soql-parser-js/

paustint··on Ask HN: What are some tools / libraries you built yourself?
This looks really cool! Just added a reminder to check out in more detail when I get to a computer :)

Thank you for sharing.
