paulific··on The Psychology of Japanese Train Stations
And they play it at Takadanobaba station which located in the area where Osamu Tezuka, the creator of Astro Boy, had his studio. (There is also a huge mural under the railway bridge outside featuring all of his characters)
paulific··on Chess boxing
Can't resist the chance to recommend the Japanese comic Bunburyoutou (文武両闘).

There is a free trial (in Japanese) at http://maoh.dengeki.com/try/bunburyoutou/index.html but that is geoblocked an image search using the kanji above should give you the idea.

Basically the author took the idea of chess boxing and then let his imagination run wild. For example: In one contest the fighters competed to factor a series of increasingly large numbers, with the winner getting the sum of the factors in seconds for a free attack on their opponent.

paulific··on Münchhausen trilemma
Occam's razor is better thought of as a method of choosing between alternative explanations of the same observed phenomena. It suggests choose the one that requires the least unproved theoretical scaffolding to support it. It is not really "accept the simplest explanation" but more like "do not create complex theories unless they explain the facts better than the simple ones."
paulific··on All Work and No Play: Why Kids Are More Anxious, Depressed (2011)
Don't know if they still make them, but it looks like they did: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UygajWAbOVQ
paulific··on Uber’s Flying Taxi
I missread that as "self driving crabs" and now I want to see that. :-)
paulific··on Anarchists in the Spanish Civil War (2002)
Well its a marxist magazine, so its essentially pushing a political line that the anarchists were wrong not to pursuing socialist goals.
paulific··on I was a corporate restaurant consultant
At the university I studied at it was still called "Government". I suppose the "science" is to make a distinction between the "practice of" and the "study of". If you study history you are a historian, but if you study politics you are not a politician (usually), so I suppose you have pick something academic sounding.
paulific··on Uber vehicle reportedly saw but ignored woman it struck
Yes, in Japan there is a custom of briefly tooting the horn to say thank you (for example when someone lets you in in front of them) and they still have problems when people have different ideas of what constitutes "too long".
paulific··on Subscription Hell
As a net user since 1995 I preferred it back then. Admittedly this is probably tinged with nostalgia, but I remember people just sharing information without needing to charge you for it. Maybe I just started with low standards, but when people tell me I need to pay for this content, I go "meh, I just won't read it then". I don't feel the loss, but possibly I don't know what I'm missing.
paulific··on Subscription Hell
Well there are genuinely people out there who don't use the content. Our attitudes to media and who should be watching what haven't changed much from the broadcast era. "I'm not one Facebook" is the new "I don't watch TV.
paulific··on Subscription Hell
Hope you're enjoying it anyway. I think the Japanese look on it more as a salad bar or smorgasbord "So many good deals!" but maybe I've been living here too long. Some of the variants have to do with JR being split up into different regional companies so each of them wants their own initiative on top of the common one.
paulific··on Moving Fast and Securing Things
Yes, I did some translation work for a global engineering company whose approach to achieving "zero fatal accidents" was exactly what you suggest. Instead of placing the blame on people for not following the rules, they identify the ultimate cause and fix the problems with their systems that made the accident possible in the first place.
paulific··on 'Anti-authority' tech rebels take on ISPs, connect NYC with cheap Wi-Fi
Reminds me of the Corey Doctorow/Charles Stross short story Unwirer: https://craphound.com/unwirer/
paulific··on Mylo: A leather-like material made from mycelium
That sounds like a great science fiction story though!
paulific··on When algorithms surprise us
So you were working on a lab proof of S.L.A. Marshall's Men Against Fire? ;-) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S.L.A._Marshall
paulific··on The making of Dark Castle
This was my one break during the year of my honors thesis! Once a week on Sunday morning I would stop work and play Dark Castle for a couple of hours. Good times!
paulific··on Understanding Deep Learning Through Neuron Deletion
This sounds rather like Baron Wulfenbach from Girl Genius come to life http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php?date=20040107 Hacker News recognizes the power of Mad Science!
