patrickg··on fish shell
Can you post your solution (or give a pointer)?
patrickg··on fish shell
Simplified example: mkdir foo, cd foo. I type in mkdir foo then press enter, type "cd esc-.". Doesn't work. Command completion in fish doesn't help here. In real life this is of course mostly more complicated than a simple "foo".
patrickg··on fish shell
I have been using fish for a few months exclusively on my Mac. I really miss a few bashisms: mostly pressing esc-. inserts the last part of the last command. I have not changed the shell on my server, somehow I am afraid of breaking things... (bad shell scripts that don't have correct shebang line).
patrickg··on Source SDK 2013
This is what the parent wrote.

Edit: "it" refers to the Valve License (AIUI)

patrickg··on German intelligence agencies can decrypt PGP?
Why is there a difference if this is old or news?
patrickg··on German Parliament says: Stop Granting Software Patents
I don't think so. I would have heard otherwise.
patrickg··on NSA Prism logo is a copyright infringment
"Dear Mr. XXX, this is the NSA. We'd like to use the image we've found on your homepage as the logo for a secret massive surveillance and spying program called 'prism'. Could you please sign the attached 20 page license and send it back to us: NSA, Maryland. Thanks in advance, Mr Smith, Chief Officer for Domestic Affairs."
patrickg··on Bitbucket passes one million users
For me it's easy to deploy the code onto a server which runs the code. I am not the only administrator, but the only software developer. I want the other admins to be able to pull code from that repository (bitbucket offers "read only ssh keys")
patrickg··on The secret button at pedestrian crossings
Not only that, it also tells you if there is an "island" in the middle of the road where you should step over. The arrow has a bar through it (looks a bit like a cross sign)
patrickg··on Interfaces in Go make it hard to navigate code
I had the same problem as a beginner (http://stackoverflow.com/q/14577162/317915) and I think it's a valid criticism. If the documentation (go doc) could help that would be great.
patrickg··on How zsh is more useful than bash
I use bash as my everyday shell since 1996. I keep on reading the "how great zsh is" articles. And I always try zsh. But after a few minutes/hours, I go back to bash. It's really hard to change.
patrickg··on Why Isn't Gatsby in the Public Domain?
I have no idea how to address that aspect. I am sure many people try to make a new law to forbid "Mein Kampf", but others want to make a "annotated" version of the book. Let's see.
patrickg··on Why Isn't Gatsby in the Public Domain?
The (at least here in Germany) well known book "Mein Kampf" by Hitler loses it's copyright in 2016. The state of Bavaria uses copyright law (German: Urheberrecht) to disallow any distribution of the book. There is an ongoing discussion how the Government can prohibit future distribution of the book, now that it goes into public domain. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mein_Kampf)
patrickg··on Obama Campaign AWS Infrastructure In One Diagram
Serious question: does the 3d mode add any information? I am distracted by it but perhaps the size of the blocks have any attached meaning? Is there a 2d variant available?

Otherwise: very interesting to see such a large infrastructure used for the campaign. I wonder how it compares to an average campaign here in Germany. I'd assume only a 10th of the servers (while spending the same amount of money :)) used here. I can't see anything special on the web before elections other than some wordpress alike web servers.

patrickg··on Review: Textadept
Great! I will try it out. It uses lpeg based lexers and a Lua api. Now my daily (coding) work is 99% Lua coding, so I feel rather comfortable with it.

I also like the file chooser (I am on Mac OS X), much faster for me than the system wide.

That's my "first 4 minutes" impression.

patrickg··on O-notation considered harmful (use Analytic Combinatorics instead)
Isn't that why we look at best/average _and_ worst case? Not only the worst case alone?
patrickg··on US diplomat: If EU allows 'right to be forgotten' …it might spark TRADE WAR
In case of the email address: I think facebook is violating german law by storing my personal information which I'd consider private. (I am not sure if they still do that.)
patrickg··on US diplomat: If EU allows 'right to be forgotten' …it might spark TRADE WAR
Perhaps not so much about tagging the photo, but a) uploading a photo of me or b) giving facebook my email address (yes, thats common practice).
patrickg··on US diplomat: If EU allows 'right to be forgotten' …it might spark TRADE WAR
Any kind of personal data must stay privat unless I decide that can be revealed/public. Name, DOB, and address are personal data. I must have the right to prevent companies giving my address away (public or other companies).
patrickg··on US diplomat: If EU allows 'right to be forgotten' …it might spark TRADE WAR
I believe that this is the current situation in Germany and I assume other E.U. countries.
patrickg··on US diplomat: If EU allows 'right to be forgotten' …it might spark TRADE WAR
Good point :)

I think my point is: "if we don't implement SOPA, we (the companies) are all gonna die!"

Don't know how to express it in general, but I hope I can make my view clear.

patrickg··on US diplomat: If EU allows 'right to be forgotten' …it might spark TRADE WAR
Many companies will go bankrupt if X will happen. X=(tape recording, internet, ATMs, privacy laws, any kind of regulation).

I can't really hear this argument any more. Sure, any regulation will have bad side effects, but who are we? A planet full of people or a planet of companies that want to maximize profit on our back? The world will not end if we are allowed some more privacy for us.

patrickg··on Use of Goto in Systems Code
TeX is more or less one big pascal function with lots of gotos. While this makes it very hard to port to a more modular (and non-pascal) system, the source code (in typeset format: http://abel.math.umu.se/~lars/misc/tex.pdf) is very readable.
patrickg··on Sweden To Charge TV Tax For Anyone With A Computer or Tablet
We have this tax in Germany as well. They just don't call it a tax, but every household and company has to pay 216 Euro/year.

They used to bind it to having a computer/radio/tv/mobile phone (with radio/internet) but now you even have to pay if you don't own any of those.

patrickg··on How Google became such a great place to work
For employees, pension and unemployment are mandatory, correct.

Don't mix up tax and health/pension/unemployment because (that was the starting point of this thread) one can believe that if you say 50% tax these insurances might come on top of that.

Otherwise, if you want to know how much you will have on your bank account after getting 70k/year, your link was very good AFAICS. You will most likely get something like 40k out of it.

patrickg··on How Google became such a great place to work
Correct, they are not wrong.

Its like this in Germany (tax wise): (http://i.imgur.com/6oiGx5B.png) - the lower blue curve is the amount of tax you pay. The x-axis is the amount of money you get (on which you have to pay tax) and the y-axis is the tax percentage. This is for self-employed people only, regular employees will deduct 1000 Euros from the amount ("Arbeitnehmerpauschbetrag"). Other amounts such as the health insurance can also be deducted.

One side note: the link you have given also calculates health, pension and unemployment insurances. This might be confused with tax, but one should be make it clear that self-employed people don't have to have pension and unemployment insurance and health insurance is much higher than for regular employees. [But one can (in practice) get around paying for health insurance, but no sensible person will do that. - Nobody enforces that you have a health insurance if you are self employed.]

patrickg··on How Google became such a great place to work
The taxes are the same everywhere in Germany. What differs is how much you pay for pension insurance (and how much you get out of it, IIRC).
patrickg··on How Google became such a great place to work
Berlin is in Germany. You could check the official tax calculator: https://www.bmf-steuerrechner.de
patrickg··on How Google became such a great place to work
50% taxes in Germany? Example: you get 42.000 Euro/year, you pay ~20% taxes. If you earn 100.000 Euro/year, you pay 30%.
patrickg··on The London Underground turns 150. See how the tube map has changed
Not related, but also interesting. The railway U1 in Berlin going right through a house. Amazing when you are in front of the house's door. http://www.bahnbilder.de/1024/-hausdurchfahrt-im-uebergangsb...
