patrickg··on List of Open Source Licences in Mercedes Cars [pdf]
Meta-question: what does [scribd] mean in the title?
patrickg··on Did these guys just reinvent the Web?
Yes. Thats why I rarely click on such titles.
patrickg··on Free Font: Norwester
Wow, an ASCII font. Useless in most part of the world (sorry for being dismissive. I actually like the font, but without any "funny" characters, it's use is very limited) Now, I'll probably get all the downvotes from today...
patrickg··on Which encryption is NSA-secure?
You can't tell if a Cypher is unbroken, because no one knows it (outside the NSA, for example).
patrickg··on Which encryption is NSA-secure?
How do you think anyone can tell you "encryption XYZ is NSA-secure"?
patrickg··on Use ASCII art to highlight code parts in Sublime Text
Interesting idea..

I have never used the minimap. I found it too small to be useful and it distracts me from the code I write. I navigate mostly by Cmd-R (on Mac, probably Ctrl-R on others). If the ascii-art wasn't that big in the real code, I'd think about it.

"me too", I had to use the URL in another browser to read the story. Ghostery + Adblock + Chrome
patrickg··on The iPhone 5s Review
OK, thanks, I understand. (I hope we'll never read it in the news "thief cuts off finger".)

patrickg··on Golang Object Oriented Design
Yes, I still have my book "Object Oriented Programming in the BETA Programming Language" by Madsen/Møller-Pedersen/Nygaard with a price tag of 80 DM in 1997 (> 40 EUR now) (I now live in Berlin)
patrickg··on Golang Object Oriented Design
BETA was the beginner's language at the University of Dortmund (Germany) back in 1996/7/8. Never saw it outside of these buildings.
patrickg··on Golang Object Oriented Design
+1 for mentioning BETA. Any actual user of that language?
patrickg··on Golang Object Oriented Design
I think that's how interfaces work. You define an interface by the methods a receiver has (a struct complying to the ReadCloser interface for example must implement Read() and Close()). While one has to get used to it, it works very nicely in practice.
patrickg··on iPhone 5c
... then you've probably never used this phone :) http://www.oebl.de/D-Netz/Geraete/Siemens/P1/P1.JPG

(IIRC this was the phone with the full size sim card)

patrickg··on iPhone 5c
Thanks for the info, I am obviously far behind ...
patrickg··on iPhone 5c
iPhone 5c + 5s require 'nano sim'. What will be next? I still remember using a full size sim card (the left one here: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e0/GSM_SIM_...)
patrickg··on PayPal hardware powered by Go
... plus you get a (output) binary with very few dependencies, easy cross compiling, nice tool chain (go fmt is great) and much more that are good arguments (for me) to use go.
patrickg··on The Great Language Game: How many languages can you distinguish between?

patrickg··on Non-English-based programming languages
I have a dual language database publishing system and I use English and German as a language source. While the obvious advantage of using english as lingua franca, I tend to use my mother tongue (German) system. It feels a bit more natural to me and it's really nice to use in presentations to non-technical people. It seems as if the barrier to use the language is much lower than it is when the programming language is English.

patrickg··on The State of eGovernment in Germany
But in most trades you can just start.
patrickg··on The State of eGovernment in Germany
1) You can run UG which starts at 1 EUR (+ 100-200 Euro for bureaucracy).

2) It is your money to spend. You never give it to anybody else. So "you don't get that money back" is completely incorrect.

patrickg··on The State of eGovernment in Germany
Huh? What stops anybody from registering a company at the Handelsregister and start working? Who needs a certificate and a proof of experience?

Or do you mean society enforces it?

patrickg··on Building our first app in Go
Thanks for the pointer! I remember seeing this, but I forgot about it. Glad to have it back.

Losing my karma: This article is (partly) BS. I have just tried the steps in the page, and it worked like a breeze.

2013-05-26, 23:10 CET: The link is not hidden, it is clearly visible and with correct description. Currently this works also on a sunday.

2013-05-27, 19:30 CET: Login / registration works on Chrome / OS X .No forced logout.

2013-05-28: link activation worked fine without problem

and so on. I don't want to say that the OP is wrong, it might be the OP has experienced exactly what he has. But generalizing this is total bs. I have done many bureaucratic steps here in Germany and most of them were really fine (submitting tax forms, applying for tax ID, business registration (Gewerbeanmeldung, Handelsregister), banking account, healthcare insurance, ...).

There are many different places where to submit forms, but usually the local trade organizations (Handelskammern) help you by organizing / bundling things together. Been there, done that.

I have a git repository on the server & push to that repository. On the server, I just pull, compile the binary and use upstart (service xyz restart) to restart the binary. Not nice, because I kill all connections. I'll switch to something more elaborate when I'll have more users on the web service.

We offer our database publishing software as open source (http://speedata.github.io/publisher/index.html). It is used in many commercial environments as a better alternative to XSL-FO. Our software allows much more flexible layouts. That said: english documentation is still behind and we are lacking nice show cases. If you need more info, just contact me.

I use shared connections, that makes tab completion scp usable.
