parshimers··on Pangolins found to carry viruses related to Covid-19
No one (in this thread at least) is claiming it's a weapon. The point is that the research lab at the center of this pandemic has, and continues to, research and collect viruses just like SARS-CoV-2. The authorities in Wuhan also tried to cover up the outbreak before it became too severe to deny. It may be a coincidence, but it also may not.
parshimers··on Pangolins found to carry viruses related to Covid-19
It wouldn't be the first time something like this happened, either. Russia accidentally released Anthrax[1] from one of their facilities in the late 70's, and it killed over 100 people in the neighboring town. Of course they tried to cover it up, and the truth did not come out until much later.

parshimers··on Sanoid – Replication and Backups with ZFS
Yes. I have an Atom on one end of the pipe as well, but it's over 10Gbe and to a 6 drive mirrored and striped vdev. Using SSH as the transport it would only approach 100MB/s, using mbuffer it can max out the storage at about 250-275MB/s.
parshimers··on Sanoid – Replication and Backups with ZFS
I wanted to use this tool for backing up my laptop to my NAS, however it only allows SSH to be used for data transfer, which is a real bottleneck for speed. It basically means you can only transfer as fast as one core can decrypt or encrypt data on either end of the pipe.

I ended up using https://github.com/oetiker/znapzend instead, because it can use mbuffer for the actual data transfer, which is much faster.

parshimers··on SQL queries don't start with SELECT
Query languages that came after it that weren't concerned with compatibility realized this. XQuery has "for" first, which is to a first approximation FROM, and "return" last, which is like a more powerful SELECT. SQL++ and its brethren also had it this way very early on. However there's so many applications and users that are accustomed to it the original way, that it is not usually possible to fight against the inertia.
parshimers··on Instacart paying 80 cents an hour because worker received a large tip
What absolute garbage, it defies the entire point of tipping. Is this even legal? If a restaurant got caught doing this, they would definitely lose many customers or even get run out of business.
parshimers··on Could High-Speed Rail Ease California’s Housing Crisis? See Japan
It's pretty funny that we still talk about HSR in California as a hypothetical, over 10 years after it was approved. Obama wasn't even in office yet. There's not a single piece of it you can ride, anywhere, despite the $9 billion it got approved for from day 1. The first transcontinental railroad only took 6 years to build, in the mid 1800's.
parshimers··on An Epidemic Is Killing Thousands of Coal Miners
>In the past 30 years, the biggest coal seams were mined out in Appalachia, leaving thinner seams coursing through sandstone.

...

>And because there's no coal, it is considered development mining or construction. So sampling the air for toxic dust is not required, even though it is the most dangerous dust. Former MSHA officials told us some inspectors did it, but most did not.

Hopefully the lawsuits cost them. However the folks that make these decisions never see the consequences; they've taken their bonuses and gone by now. Furthermore the mine doesn't pay for medicare. We all do.

parshimers··on The Internet Will Be the Death of Us
> . While Sayoc carved out ugly niches on Facebook and Twitter, Bowers found even safer harbor for his racist, xenophobic and anti-Semitic passions on Gab, a two-year-old social network that has served as a nursery for white nationalists.

pretending people couldn't find places to air antisemitic or white nationalist sentiments before the internet, or that the internet makes it easier, is silly. if anything the internet makes it harder for these fools, because now if they show their faces or use their real names, they're doxed and harangued at every turn by an internet lynchmob.

> I don’t know exactly how we square free speech and free expression — which are paramount — with a better policing of the internet, but I’m certain that we need to approach that challenge with more urgency than we have mustered so far. Democracy is at stake. So are lives.

right, as opposed to the rosy times before the internet, with timothy mcveigh, the DC sniper, and the unabomber. or how about john wayne gacy?

why this guy is paid to spew inane opinions like this is beyond me

parshimers··on Credit-Card Backlash Mounts as Kroger Weighs Expanding Visa Ban
Seriously, dealing with cash is a hassle, especially on a self-checkout. Arco has tried the same nonsense and I avoid them at every turn, because it requires me to a) have cash and b) stand in line to pay , rather than it taking a moment to swipe a card.
parshimers··on Google Chromecast is down world-wide
I really wish Google was less opaque about problems like this, rare as they are. The only way to know this is happening right now is to get frustrated enough to search around reddit, the only official indication is through Twitter, etc.
parshimers··on A drug that can repair cavities and regrow teeth (2017)
>At the very least, you can have a fun biology experiment.

I think amateur dentistry possibly resulting in turning a $50 filling into a root canal, implant, or worse, isn't most people's idea of a good time. It's great that it worked for you, but it sounds very penny wise and pound foolish.

parshimers··on “Get Out of Jail Free” Cards in New York
The Wire has it, though it's not a card exactly like this, it's just a detective's card. If I remember right, Omar tries to use it to avoid being thrown in jail.
parshimers··on AWS Fargate – Run Containers Without Managing Infrastructure
I'm pretty sure someone at Amazon is an Aqua Teen Hunger Force fan: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOd7HQoKxcU

Oglethorpe: We have successfully traveled eons through both space and time through the Fargate. To get free cable.

Emory: I think it's a s-star gate

Oglethorpe: Its the Fargate! F, its different from that movie which I have never seen, so how would I copy it?

parshimers··on Smarter half tiling in Gnome Shell/Mutter
If this piques your interest, you might want to give shellshape a look as well. https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/294/shellshape/ . It lets you tile your windows in a more advanced way than simply side by side.
parshimers··on Acid Attacks on the Rise in the U.K
Best thing would probably be a lot of water. Here's a video of someone willingly pouring 98% sulfuric acid onto their hand, they just wash it off: https://youtu.be/XeVZQoJ5FdE?t=284 . Plus, if someone pours a random liquid onto you, it's kind of hard to know if it's water, acid, lye...
parshimers··on 100-year old fruit cake found in Antarctica's oldest building
"Nice hiss." They really should mail it to him considering it smelled OK. I think he'd try eating a bit of it. I doubt it'd be the worst thing he's tried on that channel, even if the nuts are a bit rancid.
parshimers··on Monsanto leaks suggest it tried to ‘kill’ cancer research about weed killer
>There's a video where a Monsanto lobbyist spouts circular talking-points about how glyphosate was safe to drink, offered either Round Up or glyphosate and refused to drink it.

But, you can actually watch a video of someone else drinking some! (at about 8:00) : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8sgEhpHM4k

parshimers··on Tesla Model 3 is equipped with a driver-facing camera
> Audio, not so much.

" Haldeman: That the way to handle this now is for us to have Walters call Pat Gray and just say, “Stay the hell out of this…this is ah, business here we don’t want you to go any further on it.” That’s not an unusual development,…

Nixon: Um huh. "

parshimers··on Cosette: An Automated SQL Solver
Because it's awesome! You've never had to rewrite a query for some sort of reason other than the results returned (e.g. performance) and really wondered if the original and rewritten query were exactly the same?
parshimers··on Should Community Colleges Abolish Algebra?
> " First of all, we've seen in the data from many of the pilots across the country that are using alternative math pathways — that are just as rigorous as an algebra course — we've seen much greater success for students because many of these students can relate to these different kinds of math depending on which program of study they're in. They can see how it works in their daily life and how it's going to work in their career. "

I remember using this argument a lot when I was a smart-aleck kid, that what should I care about Algebra, because when the heck am I going to use it. It feels like total bunk looking back at it now. I just hadn't seen or appreciated math as something worthwhile in its own right, regardless of application. I maintained that view until I got into more advanced math classes in college. For example the being shown the Cauchy–Schwarz inequality in Linear Algebra for the first time, that was just a total 'Ah-ha!' moment of joy. I really doubt I'd have that impression of that moment if the professor had been trying to demonstrate the immediate, concrete utility of that proof at the same time.

I'm not really sure how one can reliably relay onto others the fun in math for its own sake, but it's there. It feels like a cop out to say a particular type of math needs to serve a purpose 'in the real world' instead of just being worthwhile intrinsically, as a fundamental part of reasoning.

parshimers··on The Myth of Drug Expiration Dates
> This assistant district attorney operates on the theory that if your prescription was expired on the date of the alleged conduct, you no longer “possessed a valid prescription” at that time and therefore cannot avail yourself of the affirmative defense.

Christ. That is insane. What are people supposed to do for medicines that are used only in the case of an emergency? I really wonder what goes through some of these prosecutor's heads sometimes.

parshimers··on “Spiel des Jahres” Game of the Year 2017 winners
+1 for Coup. It's easy to teach and very fast.
parshimers··on Using Deep Learning to Create Professional-Level Photographs
This is cool but I really don't get why one could call this actually creating "Professional-Level" photographs. It's more like a very good auto-retouch. There's still the matter of someone actually being there, realizing it is a beautiful place, and dragging a large camera with them and waiting for the right light.
parshimers··on The 1863 edition of the “Dictionnaire Infernal” is the stuff of nightmares
The forgotten beast Asmodeus has come! A great centaur. It has a pair of dragon-like wings and it squirms and fidgets. Beware its deadly dust!
parshimers··on Improving air conditioner efficiency could reduce worldwide temps
Where they're effective I think people already tend to use them due to how cheap they are. The article mentions the regions that are starting to buy the most A/Cs are places like India and SE Asia, all of which are humid and hot.
parshimers··on Search across every word from 25 years of the Simpsons
"This is great! And all I've done is enter my name-Thrillhouse!"
parshimers··on My Uber driver robbed me, so I took Uber to court and won
That's not why the site is broken if you're using uBlock/NoScript. It's broken because it loads everything (even the text of the site) from 3rd party domains and scripts.
parshimers··on Why I Quit Being So Accommodating (1922)
He was the first person to (formally) propose the idea of an ice age, and find evidence for it. That's pretty impressive. I don't see how what you pointed out about his beliefs detracts from the point the author was trying to make by using him as an example of a driven individual. Does the fact Newton spent many years practicing alchemy detract from his achievements? It's not about whether or not they were right or wrong in hindsight.
parshimers··on Survey data show millions of workers are paid less than the minimum wage
Yeah, for real. Does someone have the tl;dr version?
