parabyl··on Why I Left Rust
I think moreso than specifically meaning JeanHeyd was target as such due to race, the implication was rather that since JeanHeyd had previously raised that the lack of diveristy in speakers at the conf. was an issue, some members voting on this may have held onto that.

But, it's ironic (and sad) that the same person who raised the issue of diversity in speakers - who would have been the first PoC doing a keynote - was treated like rubbish and essentially pushed out to the point they no longer feel comfortable being part of it at all. It's also interesting to note that while the issues the voting body had with their talk was solely to do with the content of the talk, it begs the question of if any other participant would be treated the same way in dealing with that issue arising. In my experience it's not uncommon for that sort of irony to play out, but that's purely anecdotal.

Also, of course white is a colour but I've always seen PoC as a slightly more language-open alternative to the previously commonly used "non-white" which feels notably like language from an era long past.

> "...in violation of Greek, European Union and international law."

How's about if you're doing something that's illegal internationally, union-wide and locally, then you're simply doing something illegal (and likely evil, as in the case of kidnapping people and floating them out to sea).

Whether folks see SK/Israel the way you say or not, I'd wager both groups agree that it should always be illegal to do something as evil as kidnapping a group of people and sending them out to sea against their will.

parabyl··on Add opt-in transparent telemetry to Go toolchain
It'll be interesting to see how this is accepted by the community at large. I think explicit opt-in, combined with having the discussion about which metrics to collect in public, would be enough assurance for most that this isn't a bad idea - but doesn't neccesarily mean that most will opt-in as a result.
parabyl··on Show HN: A Tool for DJs to Talk to Spotify's Recommendations API
I've often thought Spotify would make a great alternative to Beatport etc., if you could control just that much more about music it recommends. So, I created Selecta, a DJ tool to talk to Spotify's Recommendations API and fine tune your search to find the sort of tracks you're looking for.

In this first version I've setup some limited controls from the recommendations API, such as danceability, energy and happiness. I couldn't quite decide if "more options = more fine-tuned search" or the inverse, but I'm listening to feedback from those using it and I'm quite interested to see the consensus there.

parabyl··on Show HN: Rag – A simple RSS Feed Reader that skips Paywalls
If you want to try it out without using your usual e-mail address, feel free to use a disposable email such as https://temp-mail.org/
parabyl··on Show HN: Rag – A simple RSS Feed Reader that skips Paywalls
glad you think so! it's been a breeze to use, so thank you too.
parabyl··on Show HN: Rag – A simple RSS Feed Reader that skips Paywalls
I used Newsboat as a feed reader for some time, but I wanted to be able to access my feeds on my phone and other devices. I created Rag with Supabase, React and Go, using go-readability to bypass paywalls you'd otherwise encounter opening articles from your feed, and instead allowing you to read the article in-app.

You can find the repo here: https://github.com/knightspore/rag

Welcoming any suggestions, contributions, or reviews!

parabyl··on Show HN: I built a little online drum machine using 808 style samples
Oof, so very dusty! Lovely track, thanks for the recommendation.
parabyl··on Show HN: I built a little online drum machine using 808 style samples
A little detroit techno vibe? https://peel.fm/15f0762

This is really neat! the kick some sweet distortion when you put an accent on it and have it layered with some other samples.

I've been using the Volca Drum recently and an idea from that which I imagine would be relatively simple to add to this would be a divide step option - allowing for double-time hats and the like. It would make a great addition to this fun little drum machine.

parabyl··on Roman church decorated with 4k skeletons
Similar story, when I visited there was a school group from Northern Ireland talking about "The catholics were brutal weren't they!"
parabyl··on Roman church decorated with 4k skeletons
Truly beautiful place, and one of the more interesting museums I visited in Rome in terms of artifacts and such on display.
parabyl··on Mexico’s subway drivers depend on WhatsApp to keep the trains running
A similar practice is common in South Africa in order to find out when the train is arriving (if at all). You'd have to ask the person at the ticket office to check the Whatsapp group for you (or if you're friendly enough with them, to add you to the group) where the ticket officers at other stations along the line update when the train has passed them.
parabyl··on Gross domestic product is a misleading measure of national success (2014)
As an aside, I still can't beleive we're using 'shit-hole' in this way because that man said it once. I myself am guilty, even referring to my own home country at time as such without realizing it.

But back to the topic, I think you're right about GNH and it's implications, especially when compared to Aotearoa and their efforts in establishing a more genuine level (rather than measure) of a literal 'national happiness'.

As a last touch, your comment (both words used, and in what it discusses) is comically ironic in that McKinsey is currently under investigation in my country for advising in a project that ended up landing us a few million dollars poorer and without a functioning public transport system that we could genuinely really benefit from right at the moment.

parabyl··on Show HN: A new search engine UX I've been working on in my free time
This is something I've really wanted for a while, and the design implementation is far better than what I would probably have gone for. Very nice! Bookmarked as a new Search Engine.
parabyl··on Ask HN: Have you ever had a changed-your-life moment?
For me, simply spending time with a Philosophy graduate in, and having these exact sorts of discussions around language quite frequently has had the effect of encouraging me to constantly question how efficiently I'm communicating (at times, to detriment).

On a more basic level however, logical sentence structure is a good place to start: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logical_form

parabyl··on Ask HN: Can you share websites that are pushing the utility of browsers forward?
I had a mild jaw-drop moment when it showed my house on a starry night with the satellite passing overhead! Very cool website
parabyl··on Yamaha DX7 Technical Analysis
Interestingly, the DX7's log drum patch is having a massive comeback in the South African genre Amapiano. I would draw a parallel here to the 808 bass, in that I wouldn't be surprised to see the Log Drum become a lasting element in South African electronic music.
parabyl··on Meterorite chunk crashes into house, bedroom, pillow
I previously thought Korea worked this way bit it seems it's a lot more puzzling than I thought.

parabyl··on Disinformation-for-hire in Kenya
This is a huge issue in South Africa too. It's become blatant to the point you can often immediately tell if a trending hashtag is being pushed by bot efforts just by looking at the way it's phrased + a few of the top tweets circulating it.

> Everyday new hashtags come up peddling the same misinformation against political rivals.

Is how I've been feeling for the past couple of years at least.
