papaver··on The Business of Phish
thats the magic of jam bands. its amazing getting lost in a jam, feeling the transition from one song to another, forgetting the bad has been playing non-stop for the last 30 minutes. its the newness that is most attractive for me. its the closest live music that comes to dj's spinning live. you don't know what your gonna get till its time.

its sad to see this type of music dwindle away when it was so rampant during the 60's. its magical feeling the energy from a band that can talk to each other through their music. its the same magic that happens between basketball players when they are in the zone and can pass the ball without looking to their team members.

magical.

papaver··on Top Coders Can Now Get Agents
reminds of the old days at EA when the coders were the rockstars and in the lime light. loved the ads with photos of techies.
papaver··on Stop externalising your life
reminds me of the buddhist quote:

"If while we are washing dishes, we think only of the cup of tea that awaits us, thus hurrying to get the dishes out of the way as they were a nuisance, then we are not 'washing the dishes to wash to wash the dishes.' What's more we are not alive during the time we are washing the dishes....If we can't washes the dishes, chances are we won't be able to drink our tea either."

i remember going to a gdc after party where they had a burlesque show for entertainment. 75% of the crowd had their phones out recording the event while watching the dancers through their phones. so sad.

there is little more fulfilling than enjoying the present moment. its fun looking into the past and sharing but it comes nowhere near living in the now. weather that is during the act of eating or washing the dishes...

papaver··on Dirt may explain why richest countries suffer diseases rarely seen anywhere else
its always amusing to read articles from respected sources about beliefs one has held for a long time. it feels mostly obvious to me that underexposure to germs can lead to more problems than fix. i guess a lot of my beliefs could come from visiting india and less developed countries.

its quite scary how many daily/regular routines come from people with ulterior motives. reminds me of the diamond article recent published by pricenomics. most people are ok with conforming to the norm without question.

anti-bacterial soap? really? im pretty sure all bacteria is not bad, and some actually quite helpful. regular shampoo? makeup constantly blocking the pours, not allowing the skin on the face to breath? deodorant?? i wonder how the toilet paper companies convinced the entire western culture that washing their bum with their hands was disgusting. isn't it more disgusting to have a bum thats not washed?? ah the magic of the marketing department.

papaver··on If you have failed to grok vim, ditch the arrow keys
i think work is the best place to do it. just stick with it knowing that it may take a few days to get back to your original pace. don't allow your self to use the arrow keys and you will pick them up much faster. just remind yourself that you will be able to make up all the lost time because you will easily be twice as fast once you stop picking your hands up from the home row.

i went through the same pains. the worst was copy and paste. what a pain! but in a week or two it will become mostly natural.

papaver··on The Story of Bageshwori, Watsi's First Patient
wow, totally awesome. the scene needs more startups like this. congrats guys. this is one of the coolest startups ive seen in a long time.
papaver··on TrustEgg (YC W11) Launches, Lets Anyone Create Trust Accounts For Their Kids
money isn't everything. you don't need a trust fund to pay for an education. a 'good' parent spends time with their kids. that's all a kid really wants. i know plenty of friends making 6 digits and double income parents, so much money but no time for timmy. its so sad. conversely my hippy friend makes mostly nothing and spends every waking day with his kid.
papaver··on TrustEgg (YC W11) Launches, Lets Anyone Create Trust Accounts For Their Kids
whoot whoot, more trust fund babies...
papaver··on How I Failed, Failed, and Finally Succeeded at Learning How to Code
absolutely brilliant.

this article hits the nail strait on the head.

i initially started learning how to problem solve when i started dabbling with my first computer. living in saudi arabia created an isolated environment. access to information, especially game related was hard to come by. the only thing left was to hack away any way possible to achieve the desired results, which was mostly beating the game.

thank you sierra and lucas arts for all the adventure games. i literally played all the games and beat them all without cheating, must have spent literally 1000s of hours playing and teaching myself. i learned how to hack and problem solve because it peaked my curiosity, it was just all a game to me.

now coding and problem solving come quite naturally.

it really all comes down to constant and correct intervals of dopamine release. just like any sport, entering the dopamine "flow" is what keeps me programming. time disappears, its me and the problem, fencing back and forth, just enough challenge to prevent frustration to prevent boredom.

if you program and don't experience this... i don't know why anyone would want to program if they didn't truthfully.

papaver··on Jeff Atwood Goes Off The Rails
oh please. aaron knew what he was getting into when he broke the law. in the end suicide is the easy way out. depression or not. i don't claim to know what aaron was going threw, but i do know he knew a huge community of people were ready to fight for him, yet he choose the easy way out.
papaver··on The Psychedelic Experience FAQ
i must say experiencing level 5 is amazing and scary. one truly understands how reality is constructed by the perception of the senses.
papaver··on Why online dating is broken
After some thought, Ultima IV popped into my head. Specifically the beginning of the game when the player is asked several questions which don't necessarily have a correct answer but do in effect slant the players morality in one direction or the other.

Thee and thy friend are valiant but penniless warriors. Thou both go out to slay a mighty dragon. Thy friend thinks he slew it, thee did. When asked, dost thou A) Truthfully claim the gold B) Allow thy friend the large reward?

Has anyone attempted to use such metrics to find matches between individuals?

I've also noticed that couples who have different interests actually engage in more sharing. Seems like sometimes when both partners have to many interests in line, it is a cause of detachment instead of bonding.

papaver··on Explaining coder's block to non-coders
seriously one can get coders block?? don't think i've ever experienced that. if i don't know something im in research mode. then back to coding again. i only experience 'block' like feelings when at a path in the road which requires me to pick from two solutions with equal pros and cons. could be that i code most everything bottom up, so its relatively easy to work on small tasks and build up and not have to think about the huge monster one is about to tackle.
papaver··on Apple - Think Twice
thank you for posting this!! looks like i ran into in just the knick of time. i just recently purchased a new macbook pro with a retina display for my brother how lives out of the country. will make sure i have a samsung display so he doesn't have ghosting issues or apple care issues in the future!
papaver··on The Ultimate Vim Distribution
the problem with packs... there is so much stuff to ingest, most of the stuff goes unused.

learn to use default vim first. then start adding aliases and macros as need to speed up things.

most of the plugins mentioned are useless to me. default vim is super powerful as it is.

why try to fix problems that aren't there? the beauty of vim is the unique way each user approaches it. every time i sit next to a vimmer i'm like 'how the hell did you do that!" same thing that happens when vimmers watch me code. ive been using vim for 6+ years now, i still haven't even got close to using 10% of it, and i daily use around 50 or so key commands.

papaver··on How do you live your life?
i try to live by the motto 'no regrets.'

instead of wishing you weren't a meth head, use the experience to your advantage. help other meth heads get clean, since you can relate with them more than someone who has never been there.

wishing you didn't do something rarely helps.

life shouldn't be measured by success or failure. life just is. if you ever get a chance read siddhartha by herman hesse, a brilliant story of self-discovery.

papaver··on Developers, what headphones do you find best to wear while coding?
bose headphones without noise canceling, been using them for 7 years, used the upgrade plan a couple of years ago to get the newer version for half the price.

papaver··on Ex-Google hiring committee member about job interviewing
i agree, memory is not limited in that sense. a better analogy is memory in some sense is sorted. topics that are used daily are generally near the 'front' of the que while older topics slowly fade to the background.

when fading to the background i envision a bubble forming around certain topics allowing one to use and reference them unconsciously at a macro level, but leaving the micro information hidden.

an example would be when i worked in games and did a ton of 3d math to animate and move objects around the world. at the time i was a gameplay programmer these ideas where at the tip of my fingers. i didn't have to think twice about matix multiplications, dot products, vector projections.

currently i work on ios/android development. i don't use 3d math much when deving any more. if you were to quiz me, i may not be able to implement or use those ideas very easily. a few weeks working with the same topics would bring them back to the forefront.

i learned all the sorting algorithms in college. i could probably implement a couple, but most of them i don't recall immediately or at all since i rarely care about the efficiency of the data i sort these days. i know of their existence, but to a degree that is all. if i were in a position where sorting was important, i would make sure to educate myself to appropriately.

i google almost everything. there are rarely days when i don't google something for work. learning is infinitely fun. i think being able to research a problem and find a solution is as valuable if not more as already knowing the solution.

papaver··on Ex-Google hiring committee member about job interviewing
i think the best answer to any google interview question i didn't know is..... "i'd google it"!

but seriously, why do i need to remember information about languages or algorithms i don't use daily? my memory is limited and i prefer it to be filled with the most useful information at the time.

papaver··on Ding Dong, Daily Deals Are Dead
i don't think the concept of daily deals is dead just the middle man version that groupon and its clones have ridden on for so long.

i think companies like scoutmob, tiktok, and pirq are doing a good job in trying to find new sustainable models that are beneficial for both the merchants and the consumers.

disclosure: i work for tiktok.

papaver··on H - The surprising truth about heroin and addiction
its just not that simple. the article doesn't state how it was taken in most of the cases.

i speak from experience and have seen the results of what happens to kids that mainline h. if you smoke or even ingest heroin its way way easier to do it in moderation because you don't reach the highs that shooting it produces.

most kids that shoot, try to get to a state of almost pure euphoria where your body is in pure ecstasy and you come in and out of lucid dreams. once you try that all other forms of consumption seem like a waste.

i don't believe its easy to shoot up in moderation.

papaver··on Pixar open sources production animation code, patents
pretty epic pixar, thanks! good way to set an example for the rest for the fx community on sharing.

have to say im pretty impressed with the state of the code.

love it when i see ++index in for loops! props.

papaver··on The Myth of the Super Programmer
its not really about programming.

its either you are a superstar problem solver or a simple problem solver. the programming is just a means to an end. a superstar problem solver has the ability to take most problems and break them down and find the means to solve any problem, weather related to programming or math or most anything else.

superstar problem solvers can jump into most fields of software and learn how to cope in their new environments. every job i've had has forced me to learn a different language and work on a completely different problem. the problems may change, but how one attacks and breaks them down them rarely does.

papaver··on H - The surprising truth about heroin and addiction
i think this quote really sums it up, "I try very hard not to use when I'm miserable, because that's what gets me into trouble."

it all depends on your personality. if you can get high and be responsible you can probably cope with using in moderation. unfortunately, i imagine a majority of people are not like that. i know several friends that have very addictive personalities and getting into junk would have ruined their lives.

a lot of it depends on how its taken as well. mainlining vs snorting vs smoking are all significantly different experiences, the amount taken as well. one can function when its only a small amount taken, increase the dose and you'll be lying around not being able or wanting to move.

i've tried everything under the moon though and i consider heroin pretty dangerous. i would not advise anyone to try it unless they have a very strong head. it is also one of the most amazing experiences i have ever had. the singer of sublime thought he could jump in and get out when he wanted, he overdosed, quite a sad story.

papaver··on One Horrifying Account Of Working At Zynga
I don't understand people that bitch and moan about working long hours in the software industry, especially games. You can leave whenever you want, its a free will state. Would you have been bitching and moaning if all this happened yet you made millions? You lost so you cry? Seriously, been there done that, learned my lesson at EA, moved on and made sure I don't put myself in the same situation again. No one is putting a gun to your head.
papaver··on Why Twitter’s Co-Founders Are Betting Big On A Vegan Meat Startup
i don't understand vegan meat. if you are vegan why would you want to eat stuff that resembles meat? there are plenty of amazing vegan dishes that look and taste amazing. it feels like a cop out to be vegan yet eat stuff that looks like meat. if you want to eat meat, just eat meat! there are plenty of places to buy meat that are raised by farmers that take care of their animals. it just costs significantly more than cheap meat.
papaver··on The Heretic - the U.S. government banned medical studies of the effects of LSD.
I wasn't necessarily bad at solving problems before. I think it just opened my mind to more avenues of attacking problems.

After hallucinating to a point where your thoughts influence your vision, you have a different relationship with perception. It's not something easily explained to people that have not gone through a similar same experience.

When on any sort of hallucinogen I never though I could solve math problems or computer problems. Quite the opposite really, I was almost useless at the computer and getting simple things like running winamp's screensaver seemed like a chore. The mind is easily distracted and literally thinks at speeds that is above average. I remember playing Dead or Alive and being able to literally see the game moving in slow motion and completely kicking the computers ass. Under normal circumstances I was never as good.

The whole idea being, experiencing a different reality opens the mind to a whole different set of possibilities. Things like what is a memory? Is there really a difference in experiencing something in a dream vs real life? You are what you sense which is all in your head. This is often why it is seen as a spiritual journey.

papaver··on The Heretic - the U.S. government banned medical studies of the effects of LSD.
Thanks for the reference. Would not have expected to see an article like this make the front page of HN.

I know its changed the way i perceive the world. Could possibly be the reason I find it easier to see problems from different angles and in a different light.

papaver··on THN Magazine Stole Our Code and Design
Get over it. This happens everyday a thousand times over. Provide a better service that keeps users from going elsewhere. Keep innovating to keep the competition one step behind.

Heard of Pinspire? The Samwer brothers have used the copy game over and over again to get mad rich.

It's not worth your time getting upset. Look at it as a form of flattery and move on. Your time is better spent on making your site better than bitching and/or attempting to get them to stop.
