I think most people don't know that the fan in their microwave is not vented to the outside and that that is important. Maybe its a height thing- are you tall? I don't think short people realize how gross the top 1-2 feet of a kitchen are.
Sometime in the last 30 years builders learned how to build something that looks like a house, but isn't- no vent to outside in kitchen, 'two-car' garage that cannot fit even the smallest cars, etc. You don't notice these things as a kid, so you don't look for them when you buy your first house, by which point it's too late.
While you are technically correct in that DigDug used the wrong analogy, they are correct in that slicers are really good now and you won't spend hours dialing in temps, flow rates, and speeds like you once did. You do simple CAD stuff (e.g. scaling and orientation), add supports if necessary (and the auto option usually does a good job), then press slice to get a gcode file which you send to the printer (either network, serial, or through a SD card).
Also, just use the stuff- anything besides silver has almost no resale value so you might as well use it, put it in the dishwasher, use them as skeet, whatever.
> You're the resident historical consultant for all things 'failure by arrogance,' always ready to remind everyone that things are, indeed, not getting better.
Do people get into woodworking to use tools or do they get into woodworking to make furniture? We all have an approach to craft that is an ever-changing combination of self-fulfillment, practicality and external pressures.
I guess it depends on what you consider deep expertise- I assumed a 10000 hours/PhD level of expertise, which would be hard to achieve in a couple years while working.
If they're using it in prod then there are plenty of regulations that should force them to establish a real support relationship.
Sometimes this type of stuff happens for a prototype that an org is trying to get funded, but not for 10 years. I'd collect all of the org email addresses they used for the initial d/ls and contact them first- maybe one of the ones from ten years ago has gotten promoted to a point where they can establish a paid relationship or approve use of the open source version.
You know, even if you hired a protected class because of DEI fashion, that doesn't mean you can fire them just because the fashion has changed. The laws protecting them are still there, and I would think announcing "we're getting rid of DEI hires" would be giving a labor lawyer a discrimination case on a plate.
I remember waiting for either the third or fourth page book of that series to release when The Matrix came out and being like "Oh yeah, that's where this is going". Was a much better story for a movie than a series of 700 page doorstoppers.
The local Hobbytowns had an aisle of RadioShack branded components- really basic stuff you might use for an elementary school science fair. Of course one of the stores closed last year, and the other is 90% R/C cars, so even that couldn't last.
The public internet is a public square, but does it have to be some caricature 1970's Times Square dominated by dealers, pimps, and thugs all looking to extract whatever they can from me?
