pajop··on Fabric (YC S16) Is a Home for All Your Memories
My late Mom used to write a lot of stuff about in Multiply. She even got Boing-Boinged once by Cory Doctorow. Guess what? All those posts are gone when Multiply went down. If Fabric.me gets it right, it wouldn't matter if these sites go down - you'll still have the memories.
pajop··on Just A New Fractal Detail In The Big Picture (2015)
Tim Urban points out in his AI article that it might be dangerous to expect that the AI that we know now would still be the same AI we will have in the very near future http://waitbutwhy.com/2015/01/artificial-intelligence-revolu...

"So as AI zooms upward in intelligence toward us, we’ll see it as simply becoming smarter, for an animal. Then, when it hits the lowest capacity of humanity—Nick Bostrom uses the term “the village idiot”—we’ll be like, “Oh wow, it’s like a dumb human. Cute!” The only thing is, in the grand spectrum of intelligence, all humans, from the village idiot to Einstein, are within a very small range—so just after hitting village idiot level and being declared to be AGI, it’ll suddenly be smarter than Einstein and we won’t know what hit us:"

pajop··on Ask HN: Is Knuth's TAOCP worth the time and effort?
btw, if you didn't find an in-joke [1] funny [2][3][4][5] then it's probably because of a very good reason :)

Knuth himself found it funny [6]

pajop··on Ask HN: Is Knuth's TAOCP worth the time and effort?
it's worth reading just for one of the best book in-jokes ever - see the introductory part "Notes on the Exercises" of Volume 2 "Seminumerical Algorithms"

3. [M50] Prove that when n is an integer, n > 2, the equation xn + yn = zn has no solution in positive integers x, y, z.

Knuth's book was published in 1973. The initial solution to this exercise was solved by a then Princeton professor in 1993 and was finalized by same professor and his former student by 1995.

pajop··on Requirements for DRM in HTML are confidential
I agree with this. When I was buying physical music CDs and play it on my laptop - different CDs had different DRM formats. After a while, I had 6-7 different DRM-enabled players. I stopped playing physical CDs on my laptop after that.

pajop··on Should we stop believing Malcolm Gladwell?
I'm trying to think now what would be the opposite of this? Books that are completely counter-intuitive, that forces you to rethink your original Weltanschaunng in the first place - Niall Ferguson's "Civilization: The West and the Rest" and Nassim Taleb's "AntiFragile: Things that Gain from Disorder" comes to mind. Even rereading Adam Smith's "The Wealth of Nations" can give you this counter-intuitive insight.
