Decade old code might compile but might not run on modern hardware. E.g. I have some code base, s7 scheme + c++, which is 100% posix and it compiles on M1 macs but does not run. And no this is not due to the change from x86 to arm, as the code runs fine on x86 linux as well on e.g. raspberry pi's. macOS seems to prevent drawing outside of the main thread. IIRC this used to work in the past on OSX. I know, you shouldn't do this, but as it works fine on other platforms/systems...
>I had a coworker that nearly burn his leg when having the laptop on them and coding with Spotify in the background.
I wanted to argue: this isn't a laptop, until I remebered how my XPS 15 almost burned off my finger tips, and not only once, but several times. If you pack a gaming gpu into a notebook, guess what will happen: people will use it to play games, and boom: the thing is at a constant ~90°C while doing so...
How is a product like this passing any QA and beeing rushed out of the door ?
Because of the @ sign ? That and many things regarding Macs are quite odd. When I as a programmer has to google how to enter [ | and ~ I am about the throw the thing out of the window....
It doesn't truly matter or? It's not like you are going to work on sundays. You only realize it with calenders in e.g. Outlook, and long gone TV guides....
Crosscompatiblity? IIRC the same concept was used for some exo-lisp gtk bindings, IIRC fennel, and I couldn't get it work for the life of it under M1 macs....
What baffled me most about that time, was that (some) developers would use PCs to develop ZX spectrum games. This was e.g. described in Bob Papes fantastic book "It's behind you", where he recalls the development of R-Type. Nowadays you would definelty do so, and you still can, e.g. with using C with z88dk and target a whole palette of Z80 targets.
I am not sure if I understand correctly. So this is a scheme running on a scheme. You need e.g. Chicken to compile/minify it and then run it via Gambit.... Why? Why would I do, except of learning puroposes of course, do such thing. I clearly am missing something.
Yeah, the M1 is fast and does not get loud when doing heavy tasks BUT the whole system needs polishing by Apple. Last night i brew installed haskell-stack (HEAD) which would compile the whole thing. It takes quite some time and while doing so I was watching a show with Quicktime. The sound would skip every now and then like it was in the early 90ies with Linux and Sound. That was quite irritating and annoying. (14'' M1 Pro)
>....if I'm in an area with thousands of others using headphones, I might get >some interference. That's it. Otherwise, totally fine.
Which imho is completely unacceptable because it annoys the hell out of me. I was using AirPods with an Xiaomi 8 Pro phone half a year ago. And this happended constanly and most of the time at street crossings in urban areas where 2-3-4 people would cross your way. Since I switched to an iPhone this never happened again.
PS: Why was I using AirPods with a cheapish android mobile phone? I tried lots of air pods like products from various vendors and each and any of them worked nicely for a couple of days until I would charge them overnight which killed the charging box where the headphones resided in or the headphones themself. Or like other useres in this thread described: one headphone would pair the other suddenly not anymore...
I just saw that there is sales on PS Store. So if you own a PS4 grab the whole collection with all 4 Jak games. But yeah, an open source JAK would be unbelieavble.
2021 was the 2nd year in a row that there was sales on Apress where they throw out great Lisp books for 6/7/8 Euro printed or digital. Subscribe to r/lisp or r/common_lisp and you will get the news.
So if they have C Functions for all the things, this mean I could improve render depth? I just played OOT with mupen64 and realized that e.g. when you run around in Kokiri Forest some object like npc's will appear only when you are pretty close to them. I guess this was done in the past because of computing and rendering powers, right? Would be nice to tweak this.
SOMA sources would be nice. Just last night I ran into this bug under Linux when pulling the lever at the relay station in delta sector the game reproducibly crashes with an trap divide error in libfmodevent....
From the github page (https://github.com/raspberrypi/rpi-eeprom/issues/28) you can see that this needs an updated firmware which you can install via rpi-update. Never used Ubuntu on the Pi only raspbian, but I am sure they also have those rpi tools.
How does Ubuntu run on the Pi work? I never got passed installation, because after install the first boot just hangs. It seems to me it wants to install additional stuff via ethernet which in my case is not attached and I never had the option to configure wifi....
If you buy a e.g. 2+ plus some mods you can attach it to a modern TV and use SDs or even harddisks to load roms in a jiffy, which exeeds, at least my, childhood dreams. That you get for half the price imho.
Same here. When I first saw that feature 2014 on my MBP back then I thought Linux will have that soon. Man was I wrong....But actually it should work, as I can e.g. tap 3 fingers on a link now here on a XPS to open it in a new tab.
Cool write up/experiment, and I can feel the pain with Linux and Sound issues. A few days ago I had a job interview and they used MS Teams. At first I was completly blown aways that there is a native linux app. For the first 5 minutes I tried to get sound input working but gave up. Luckily once you press the invite link, you can also choose to join via browser, and then sound input worked directly as expected.
Actually the MBP is a poor example imho. If your dGPU dies, like it used to in the past and needed resoldering by a specialized shop or replacement of the whole logic board, you lose your external monitor capabilities. Maybe they improved that situation nowadays.
