What you can get out of one: e.g. caffeine, without it the "screensaver" will blacken the window, which I do not want..... You cannot disable soem features in window manager or apps. The workaour ist to use a shell extensions or sometimes called applet.
Yes. I just compiled and ran it on an M1. You need to fetch SDL and SDL_mixer from homebrew and fiddle with the Makefile. Thats the easy part. The sucky part is the data is expected in in /usr/share which i do not want to pollute. The sources are (sorry guys) a disaster. If I find an elegant solution to easily set the datapath I will push it to github and rename it to OpenAirCombat....
Because they would sell more games in the end. I guess this is exactly what will happen: A Steam Runtime for 32bit x86 games bundeled with FexEmu for M1 and a 32 bit x86 runtime for macOS in general.
Work count as work ?!? Soooo, anacdote time. I had this boss who walked into my office and saw me sitting in front of my computer, reading the screen and not typing. He asked me: "what are you doing?" I said: "thinking about how to solve problem X." he said: "okay, but why aren't you typing?!?!" For him it was working as a software engineer is only when you type.....
Why preinstalled? They are not even preinstalled on PoPOS. If you choose nvidia via powermanagement and they aren't installed, only then they will be downloaded and installed.....
If you think of the hazzle because of offloading (intel by default and nvidia by demand) just purge bumblebee(at least that was the issue before boowkworm) and you have mostly the same experience.
Regardless of how cool this is, which I truly think, won't this "break" tons of apps and tools? NTFS and (V)FAT(32) arent't case sensitive and I have seen tons of projects which will fopen file.xy regardless if the file was created as File.xy or fIle.xy or FILE.xy.... (you get the picture).
Interesting what he mentioned about IRC and the C channel on freenode being horrible. Never been there but in several others. I especially like to remember the #chicken scheme channel. Those was, maybe and hopefully still is, one of the friendliest, most helpful and nicest places in the world wide web.
Give it some time. The more these devices get available the better the software gets. I remember back when AMD64 cpus freshly emerged and you would try to compile some bigger or special software it simply didn't work and you had to compile it for 32bit, e.g. Wine.
I have this reproducible issue on an XPS 7590(using a Killer 1650) that when I do somehting GPU heavy, e.g. gaming, the Wifi connection will get super flaky and then stop completley. DMESG is flooded with error messages regarding wifi. I only realized this, that the Steam client has a little notification which would tell you that you went offline. I started to experiment and it works for me if I disable the 11n standard. The driver has an option to do so (modprobe -r iwlwifi && modprobe iwlwifi 11n_disable=1). Only then I can play games and have an internet connection... I am pretty sure that if this would happen on Windows, all the users would have gone balastic.
Thanks for positing this. I worked on the raylib 4 bindings for Chicken 5. When chicken switched from version 4 to 5 many bindings needed a re-work. Anyways, raylib has tons and tons of bindings, and the once for Schemes are all somewhat incomplete(like Chicken and Gambit), some do not work at all(e.g. Chibi) and therfor need maintanance. As raylib is evolving so do the bindings and need constant enhancement and fine tuning. I hope projects like this will encourage more people to chime in and maybe help to improve things.
Okay, one step further, and one step back: installing the asahi-edge kernel requires the mesa-asahi-egde package otherwise you won't see a thing. This isn't been done automatically. Now brightness works which is fine, but working e.g. with raylib which will create a GLX context fails now with mesa-edge...
Also the whole things seems somewhat un-deterministic. This morning I booted and the the Login screen nothing works. No keyboard input, touchpad won't move the cursor. Powerbutton works and will power off the machine. Then, u-boot starts and it stopped with some inputs, like it seems those keys I entered at the login scree, which shouldn't be at all NEVER....a few reboots and then it works normal. Very strange...
Actually it works quite nicely on a M1 14''. Even battery life is quite good. Compared to my Dell XPS 15 7590 it has twice the battery life, easily if not even more.
One thing which bothers me a lot as it makes the laptop hardly useable for me at night: display brightness cannot be adjusted, it is either off or 100%. Some user claim this can be accomplished by installing the asahi-edge kernel, which does not even boot for me.
And this also bothers me lot: why are things checked in/distributed which do not work at all in Asahi Arch?!?! If you install e.g. a dev kernel which does not boot because the NVME driver is broken and you do not have a fallback kernel you are doomed. You cannot mount the partition in macOS to fix this manually.
Maybe not now. But in 10-15 years when the machine is completly outdated and unsupported by Apple, and you can get them cheaply on ebay and co., it's nice to re-use those good machines for still needed jobs.
>The reality is these Intel processors are just a big inefficient hot mess.
Well that may or may not be the thruth but Linux and the cpu itself has sweepdstep, which can and should clock down to like 800Mhz when idle saving a lot of power. What I found the biggest drain was the display. Dell XPS 15 is a nice (linux) machine, almost everthying works out of the box, BUT the battery life is a joke. The 4k display is the biggest betteryt hog here (check with powertop). Also I do not understand why the manufactures build muxless machines for dedicated GPUs.I want to disbale nvidia complelty, unseen on the PCI bus via bios setting....
Exactly. I had a 286 for a long time and then jumped to a Pentium. In between that period I missed a lot of games which would only run on >386 especially Doom. I played a lot of Wolfenstein. My first walkthru was with one life and lots of lots of saving and reloading, because I didn't realize you could press m to use a medipack, HAHAHA dang!
That is not procratination. Procrastinators will avoid a task to verz best end and then do the least minium to get the job somehow done. You avoided and anvoided and then quit. I think this is a personality disorder called (anxiously) avoidant personality disorder. And I am not saying that to label or to fret you but to help. If you know the name and shape of your enemy it is easier to fight it. Please go and talk to a psychiatrist. A behavior therapy can help immensly.
I think there was an update in the past which drained the battery more than it should have BUT now since the latest update I have the feeling that the power consumption is even better utilized than it has been ever before on the 14". I watched Netflix for hours and hours and hours on the weekend. PS: I switched from Safari to Chrome. Not sure how big the impact is on the battery in regards of media streaming.
Oct 2019 I flew to Mumbai and was a bit scared because of smog, only to find a huge and vivid city where everything ran on gas, as it seemed. No smog! How great. 2 weeks later my returning flight home was from Delhi and we haven't even landed in Delhi my eyes started to burn... I hope you guys over there will find a solution for this.
