That means you are probably using a limited set of lightweight apps. Or maybe competing for the longest lasting S3 award :P Usually, people tend to install more and more apps and those apps themselves are getting more and more resource hungry. That's what's driving the higher and higher hardware requirements and that's how the manufacturers survive. This is not even Android or iPhone specific pattern, this is true for all my laptops as well. Several years ago a dual-core 4Gb ram laptop felt like a hell lot of power and now, with Docker, VirtualBox, tonnes of services running inside of them, and a video call on background, my i7 16Gb macbook feels like a turtle.

Add: Skype, I think is a great example. I used to use it (maybe through immo.im) on Nokia 5233 and it was fine. And today Nexus 6P is getting hiccups.

I think replacing a not broken phone, at least to a flagship, is rarely a rational decision. People buying a flagship are buying a new toy and they want this toy to entertain them, give emotional satisfaction and show a little bit of "tomorrow". That's (in my opinion) is what the high price tag for. Essential tried to enter a high price territory from the first shot and just failed to impress. Otherwise, I bought a Nexus 5X for my mom last year and I think that was a pretty rational choice. It's cheap, performant and still supported by google. Absolutely no need to replace until she breaks it.

From what I hear from my fellow Android users, it's a common story. And yeah, it happens less for iPhone. My thinking is that partially it's a platform fragmentation to be blamed. As long as the phone is new, companies will be running perf tests for it, but it's physically not possible to rigorously test an app for 2+ years worth of Android devices. While in Apple ecosystem 2 years == just 2 devices. I'm an Android user from the inception and I observed this ~2 years trend for every one of my phones. My wife's iPhone 5s (not the strongest device by any means) seems to be still fine though.
pacavaca··on Ask HN: Which internet option you use when you are on biz trip to USA?
Cricket is quite cheap too. https://www.cricketwireless.com/ The price should be comparable to T-mobile, but they run on top of a different network (AT&T). Not sure which one is better though.

How does it work in your company? Which systems do you use and how do you manage to search across them. Please comment!

So, is it actually "by humans" or it's a synthesized speech? Just wondering, sounds a bit robotic :)
pacavaca··on Show HN: Ask anyone for book recommendations or give one
Feels like it needs some selection from shelf & list right on the recommendation page. People are generally lazy and digging through two lists to recommend just one sounds like a lot of work. On the other hand, glancing at random 5 (N) and trying to suggest something similar from your list feels much easier.

You can then share on socials something like "Could you please recommend me something like `title 1`, `title 2`, `...`", so that people know if they can help right after reading your ask. imho.

pacavaca··on Show HN: Desktop search for your GitHub, GDocs, Jira, and more
Hi HN,

We've been working hard on OneBar.io and finally, we're ready to show the very early version to the world. Think of it as an Apple Spotlight, searching your Jira, Github, Google docs (trello, slack, email, dropbox and many more later).

In this first beta you can:

- add a private github repo (go to Gihub in integrations)

- add a public github repo (go to Git)

- add a google drive account (not a big one, please :) )

- connect Jira and Confluence

- search in web and using our desktop app (recommended). The app is electron based and tested mostly on mac, though linux build should also work.

Some things to check out in desktop app:

- vim-style controlls (ctrl+j/k/u/d, G, gg, /, : )

- continuous search (try selecting a word and hitting a search icon again)

- search modifiers (in: type: last: project:)

- shortcut to activate the search is cmd+shift+O

Currently we're trying to learn if something like this is needed. So, please, let us know what do you think. Just comment here or use the chat icon in web version or Support menu in tray dropdown. Thank you!

P.S. In the current state it can easily choke on big projects, so it may not be a good idea to add linux kernel repo...
