pacaro··on We’re all just temporarily abled
Did you ever try `cal 9 1752`
pacaro··on We’re all just temporarily abled
Only if you use a proleptic calendar. If you are entering dates from historic documents, you need to know which calendar the author of the document was using
pacaro··on Revealed: WHO aspartame safety panel linked to alleged Coca-Cola front group
Particularly the way coleslaw is presented in the US. You can make a perfectly delicious and healthful coleslaw without mayonnaise or cream (or sugar!)

I just looked at the ingredients of a premade coleslaw (Safeway). The second and third ingredients are mayonnaise and sugar respectively.

pacaro··on A supercapacitor made from cement
Poured concrete almost always needs reinforcement, which is typically done with steel bars (rebar), which would presumably mess with the capacitance. Maybe making cinder blocks (breezeblocks) out of this would be more interesting
pacaro··on Pull of the Undercurl
Where does the undercurl come from? TFA credits kitty, which I understand to mean supporting undercurl in a terminal. My first experience of it was with the spell checker in Microsoft word circa 1993, does anyone have an earlier sighting?
pacaro··on The Heresy of Decline
In Washington state at the very least this isn't true. The default parenting division is 50:50, and there would need to be strong extenuating circumstances for a parent that wants 50% parental time to not get it. In my experience men are less likely to seek 50%.

Equal co-parenting is hard, it pretty much requires that you live in or near the same school district as your ex. Being a weekend or summer co-parent doesn't have the same constraints.

It won't be the right solution for every case, but it is always available.

I know several single dads raising kids with little or no co-parent from the mother, but it is the exception, I know far more who went with "every other weekend plus one midweek night"

pacaro··on Busiest day ever for electric vehicle charging predicted on UK roads
A couple of weeks ago I rented an electric car from Enterprise in the US and they told me to not worry what the charge level was when I dropped it off, they'd just charge it overnight.

I returned it with ~4 miles left

pacaro··on SlowDownAndWasteMemory()
I worked for a while with Henrik Frystyk Nielsen, who worked on the early HTTP spec and httpd. We would give him a hard time for this — among other things.

I know that Phillip Hallam-Baker probably first used that spelling in a document

pacaro··on SlowDownAndWasteMemory()
Woosh. Also Henrik is Danish, he can claim that English isn't his first language
pacaro··on The rule says, “No vehicles in the park”
I'm not sure that I have an established opinion about TFA, but my tone was poor. I'm well rebuked
pacaro··on The rule says, “No vehicles in the park”
It's definitely a rhetorical challenge, and even if TFA is using a poor analogy, it does serve to illustrate this problem, which feels to me like part of what it is trying to communicate.

I have a lot of experience thinking that I get the point of someone else's argument, and then realizing later that I didn't actually get the point, or not in a way that was useful to both parties in the conversation

When I don't feel understood it's usually because the counterparty hasn't said things that allow me to recognize that they have internalized what I'm trying to communicate

Changing tack a little, I think that this is one of the things that I admire about some legal writing, that they are intentionally addressing the act of communication in addition to the substance of what they are communicating. In addition there is a recognition that their words have consequence

pacaro··on The rule says, “No vehicles in the park”
Regardless of whether you do actually get the point, when multiple comments indicate that they think that you didn't get the point that tells you that you have failed to communicate that you got the point. Doubling down doesn't help
pacaro··on Writing prettier Haskell with Unicode syntax and Vim
I use vim digraphs pretty extensively, but typically for comments, and not code.

It's nice to be able to concisely document anything mathematical this way, it's also cute to be able to use the box drawing characters

pacaro··on The Neural Net Tank Urban Legend
Some time in the mid 90s I spoke with someone who had worked on this kind of problem (and others) on the London Underground. There had been a desire to know platform occupancy, and that this could be achieved by using a NN. The story as relayed to me was that the NN was never much more reliable that simply measuring the brightness of the platform — or rather the reflection of lights from the platform surface — which could be fairly easily calibrated

I took it less as a cautionary tale about NN and more about looking for simple solutions

pacaro··on I booted Linux 293k times in 21 hours
I can see some interesting approaches here. Given n threads/workers you could divide the search space into n sample points (for simplicity let's divide it evenly) and run the repeated test on each point. When a point hangs, that establishes a new upper limit, all higher search points are eliminated, the workers reassigned in the remaining search space.

Given the uncertainty I can see how this might be more efficient, especially if the variance of the heisenbug is high.

Biasing a binary search would only be beneficial if you know something about the distribution of the search space
pacaro··on The Surprising Power of Documentation
This issue around poor writing skills is something that I've thought/worried about for a while. At some level of seniority (the more junior the better IMO) we expect developers to write design docs. The inability to communicate clearly in those documents is a huge problem. Oftentimes misunderstandings and ambiguities are cleared up at design review, but then never reintegrated into the document, leaving two artifacts, the implementation and the design doc. These obviously drift over time, maintaining correspondence is hard. But when one only ambiguously described the other from the get go, then the documentation is broken. This too is technical debt.

If you are fortunate, you can write code in an organization which has a high code quality bar, uses consistent styles etc. But it is rare (vanishingly so I nearly 30 years experience) to find the same bar applied to the design docs.

pacaro··on Implementing Cosine in C from Scratch (2020)
Agreed absolutely. I've used quaternions when someone else made the decision that was what the physics engine was going to do! But when I'm the decision maker it's 3d vectors and matrices all the way
pacaro··on Implementing Cosine in C from Scratch (2020)
I went through the same exercise implementing trig functions for scheme in webassembly...

It was a rabbit hole for sure

https://github.com/PollRobots/scheme/blob/main/scheme.wasm/s...

[Edit: above is just the range from 0-π/4, the branch cuts for cos are at https://github.com/PollRobots/scheme/blob/main/scheme.wasm/s... ]

pacaro··on Implementing Cosine in C from Scratch (2020)
Of course gimbal lock is a thing, and there are ways to avoid it, even without quaternions, but I'm curious as to when it should be avoided. I think that gamers are now so used to it, that removing it might cause more problems than it solves
pacaro··on Autoimmune disease can attack the brain, cause psychiatric symptoms
Getting to see a rheumatologist is way too hard. I have a more mundane autoimmune disease (psoriasis/psoriatic-arthritis) and excellent insurance, and it's still a struggle. And then it's a struggle to get authorization for the medication, even with good insurance
pacaro··on Zig is hard but worth it
I understand this, but haven't found this to be an issue personally. I just download the pre built tarball, expand it, make sure that /opt/zig-latest symlinks to the right folder, and setup path

That's more work than apt-get install for sure, but not so much more

pacaro··on When LIMIT 9 works but LIMIT 10 hangs
This. And profile guided fuzz testing. Ideally every basis path that serializes/deserializes should be tested
pacaro··on Medieval Illustrations of Bonnacons
Medieval Europeans would have been familiar with polecats. They are/were used for pest control, although they were considered pests themselves. They're probably the ancestor species for ferrets too

In the 70s I knew someone who kept them as pets and for hunting rabbits. They really do stink

pacaro··on Show HN: Ki Programming Language
Zig seems to have similar goals and be rather further along, thay would be a good comparison language. I feel that zig's error handling is cleaner that ki's
pacaro··on The Viterbi Algorithm at 50 (2017)
Another fun fact, you could use one of the Roman dodecahedrons mentioned in another of today's articles to encode or decode Golay codes by hand...
pacaro··on The Viterbi Algorithm at 50 (2017)
Voyager also uses Golay codes which are pretty neat too. The original paper is just one page.
