p0d··on Ask HN: How do you raise your kids in the age of AI?
There are certainties only adults need to understand, such as we will die. However, my close friend's three little girls understand this following his early death.

The certainty that kids require is to know know they are loved and provided for.

As humans we all have to chose at some stage a worldview that believes we are material objects or there is a God. I have chosen the latter and brought my children up with the knowledge of the Bible. I am certain God is with me, this life will have challenges, and I will go to a better place when I die.

p0d··on Why does Britain feel so poor?
I am a walker and walk around most of my city, Belfast. The affluence I encounter does not seem to match the news narrative. I am concerned that I have become hard-hearted. Alternatively, I wonder if I just see the world differently to others. I have not determined how to come to a conclusion on the matter.I have lived and worked in some of the poorest regions and housing estates of the UK. If anyone has insight I would love to hear it.
p0d··on Ask HN: How to backup iCloud images to second cloud provider
I have been using rclone for years, it's great. https://rclone.org/iclouddrive/
p0d··on Ask HN: How to Consult Part-Time as a Community College Instructor
I am in a similar position to yourself but more concerned about remaining current, than looking for paid work.

Working with a colleague/friend in my last job for ten years gave me the edge to stay ahead. I have not figured out how fill that gap.

p0d··on Ask HN: Is maintaining a personal blog still worth it?
This is exactly why I started to blog 20 years ago. To remind myself how to do things and help those who stumbled across the posts. It was a way of saying thank you other people's posts who had helped me.
p0d··on Ask HN: Is maintaining a personal blog still worth it?
My 20 year old blog is private to myself. I have observed I keep having the same plans and ideas at different times. It has been very useful to pin those ideas down to a persistent plan or strategy.

I have also found it useful as I am an external thinker and over sharer. A day rarely passes that I don't send up a random thought to the blog, rather than it being an unnecessary whatsapp.

p0d··on Ask HN: I'm a dev who never wants to be on call again. What are my best options?
Not an answer to your question but I used to keep the on call money in a separate pot. Then over time I would buy something fun from the pot, like some new tech. I found this helped me.
p0d··on Ask HN: What's Your Morning Routine?
get up around 6 and pee...eat 1/2 homemade oatmeal cookie...drink glass of juice...eat rest of cookie...60g of porridge in a bowl with skimmed milk to bring it up to 240g...90s in microwave...cut up fat pear while waiting...add pear to warm porridge with a generous amount of honey...cup of regular coffee...read the news and other stuff...7, read bible in a year daily reading quietly outloud (as it helps me concentrate)...pray...save some thoughts to my private wordpress journal from my phone so not to bug my wife with my random musings...8, get ready for work [I was fat for 50 years of my life, now I am not...routine helps me but I am learning to stop boring my wife and kids about it...hence this outburst ;-)]
p0d··on Ask HN: To get married, I need to send an email the shortest time possible. How?
both our rings cost $80...30 years next year :-)
p0d··on Ask HN: How do you manage the risk of losing access to your email address?
I have my own domain, pay for fastmail, and use Gmail as my client. More than this and you are overthinking.
p0d··on Ask HN: Who has an interesting job?
I have gone from being an Infrastructure Team Leader looking after 120 servers to a Lecturer and teach around 120 students.I get a much greater sense of fulfillment working with people.

I'm also surprised to find teaching is harder work than a 24/7 saas. You can become removed from your users in IT. Your users in teaching are right in front of you with all their joy, stuff of life, and drama.

p0d··on Over 47? Have you gone through midlife transformation?
At 49 I left my IT job to join an incubator and grow my sideline business of 15 years. That lasted about 9 months and since then I have become a Lecturer in Computing in Further Education. I love my new job. It has many freedoms and also challenges. Freedoms around hours and challenges around your "users" being 3 feet in front of you.
p0d··on Ask HN: Best Resources for a New Dad?
Are you worried about your wife, as you mention hormone issues?

My wife was depressed for a time after our first child. This was a difficult time for her and I felt like an absolute failure. My church minister asked me one day did I think my wife was depressed. My wife and I talked about it, she went to the doctor, took medication for a month or two and was back to her normal self. She had never taking similar medication before or during the last 30 years.

Do your bit, be a good provider and hopefully one day like myself and my wife you will be drinking hot chocolate in your child's apartment like we were last night, having a laugh and a chat.

p0d··on Ask HN: What is your one-person-SaaS project?
I have been running this by myself for 15 years, https://freeperiod.co.uk, while working fulltime (with my employer's knowledge).

September is busy as there is a bit of work to do for the new school year.

The key learning for me is that people will pay you to solve a problem and that problem does not need to be rocket science.

p0d··on Ask HN: What's the most creative 'useless' program you've ever written?
this had also crossed my mind back a while back for reading home gas meters :-)
p0d··on Ask HN: What book had a big impact on you as a child or teenager?
Stig of the Dump and Peter Pan.

As an adult I can now see as a child I was drawn by lonely characters, finding friends and going on adventures. I was well cared for in my family but not emotionally. I was the boy who turned up at your house on Christmas Day. I invested too much energy in transient friends and running the streets. I am very happy to say my kids have had an entirely different experience of life, though I attribute about 70% of this to my wife.

p0d··on Ask HN: Security risks when buying mini-PCs/PCs from unknown vendors?
I bought a pc from an unknown computer vendor and my credit card details where stolen. My card was used to buy lottery tickets and had to be cancelled.
p0d··on Ask HN: What's the worst advice you've ever received?
"You are ugly and need to learn to live with it", from my Father at my 18th birthday.

I share this not to garner sympathy. I am more than 30 years over it, but it did impact more than I understood at the time. If you are still hung up on historic lies I would recommend you find a way through or you they will dent you, even if part of you knows they aren't true.

My view of myself was later shaped by christian faith. The Bible tells me I am fearfully and wonderfully made. I have an attractive wife and good looking children but even that was not even enough to fix the dent. As humans we do not have all truth inside our own heads. We need a second opinion on much of our internal thoughts and processes.

p0d··on Ask HN: How to finish last 30% of a side project?
I have made significant sideline money over 15 years making a saas product where testing was, "oh look, that didnt work", or Chris, "the website crashed".

I had no idea what I was doing when I nade the site. I bought an html4 book and copied code from the PHP manual.

Stop beating yourself up and get something out there. The truth is you haven't got to the hard bit yet, selling it (which I'm guessing is your direction of travel).

I can guarantee from your comment the code you are writing is better than mine. There is joy in making something that you can call your own.

When I first showed my website to people a few said it was rubbish. That rubbish site has paid for deposits for my kid's houses, many family holidays, and much more.

Get it done and look forward to the next challenge :-)

p0d··on Ask HN: People who were alive when walkmen were introduced. What was it like?
I remember laying in bed listening to The Cure and being amazed at all the different sounds I could hear. I also remember loving being able to listen to Survivor while running.

As others have said, there was no sense of social isolation. This is nore of a modern construct as people become more focussed on self and less on those physically around them.

p0d··on Ask HN: How did you become a good listener?
I'm not sure if I'm a good listener, but I've improved by asking people questions instead of just talking about myself. Doing this makes you realize how tedious it is to be around people who dominate conversations, and it shows you how tedious you might have been yourself.
p0d··on Ask HN: How to deal with memory/cognition slowing down as an engineering leader?
I'm 52 now and I rely more on my notes app now, which is Joplin. Keep making notes as you are doing at present and it will help.

I also resonate with the person who said that reading out aloud helps. I start each day reading the Bible and I read out loud when my mind is overly busy. I find this helps.

I also like your comment about never being great at making decisions quickly. I often describe myself as a good thinker, if not a fast thinker. In saying that, we do tend to compare ourselves to the fastest thinkers we know. So don't beat yourself up too much :-)

p0d··on Ask HN: How do you structure your shared finances with your spouse/partner
Some start out with one shared account, then nove to one shared account and a separate account for each individual. I have been married for 30 years and believe the latter is best.
p0d··on Ask HN: What single line of code would you put on a programming shirt?
print("Nike")
p0d··on Ask HN: What's your successful or moderately successful side project?
My sideline makes about $12k a year, costs around $200 to run, and has been running for 15 years. It's a room booking system for schools. I reckon I need to put in 2-3 weeks of work a year.

I haven't figured out yet if I am a rubbish businessman or an excellent sideliner :-)

p0d··on What's the most radical book you've read?
Agreed. I love the Old Testament too, as it is so raw and real. Murder, betrayal, sex, prostitution, and war. Interwoven with the hope of a new start with Christ coming to earth, and a new beginning when he returns.
p0d··on Ask HN: SaaS prcing. Why not charge the little guy?
Your comment made me wonder if this is the reason a lot of software is a nigthmare. As in, workers will put up with something if they are mandated to but individuals will not.

The analogy in my head is the most excellent little bespoke bun shop I go to every week with my wife which is awesome. Compared to buns made for the masses in the supermarket.

Maybe there is a market for craft software as in craft beer :-)

p0d··on Ask HN: Seeking ideas for preschool/school projects
I'm a lecturer and it strikes me you are talking about some pretty advanced stuff there:-)

I would go for a hands-on, making exercise. I think my son was around 7 when I made a crystal radio with him. He was pretty bored until he heard voices in the earpiece. I will never forget the look of surprise on his face. You are an extremely curious, independent learner. Most students are not in my experience. The biggest challenge in education is moving the least able, to the most able forward. So consider activities that work for all. You suggested group work which is a good idea as you can assign members specific tasks.

p0d··on Ask HN: Can you recommend some poetry?
Try some of my local poets, Louis MacNeice and Seamus Heaney.
p0d··on Ask HN: How do I get better at programming as a hobbyist?
I have been a hobbyist, made a website moneymaker, for the last 20 years.

Pick a framework/s with good documentation and code grom there. Get AI to help fix your code but not write it.

You do not learn well help surfing and getting a dozen answers to the same question.
