ozzydave··on The EV Transition Is Harder Than Anyone Thinks
Should help with brake dust too, EVs will only use friction brakes when regenerating won’t slow the car enough, which isn’t common.
ozzydave··on Monochrome terminal setup for an E-ink monitor (2022)

ozzydave··on Mazda has tested a synthetic fuel in an unmodified MX5 on a 1000-mile road trip
And the majority of people will charge when power is cheapest, meaning peak power won’t increase nearly as much.
ozzydave··on Hyperpaper Planner: fully interlinked dayplanner for e-ink tablets
This is cool! I've made my own last year, but it took some time - I'd have probably paid $20 to skip the effort. Being personalized means I can have a few tasks show up every weekday which is handy.
ozzydave··on Ticketmaster's tech problem isn't a tech problem
Life is short, and lots of people want to see these artists live.

ozzydave··on Alcohol death toll is growing, US Government reports say
I've found switching every other drink for an Non-alcholic beer is working quite well. They're pretty tasty these days, and your hands are still busy with a drink.
ozzydave··on America Has Lost Its Oil Buffer
We should guarantee a price to refill the SPR, so US oil companies will continue to invest in US production for the medium term. https://twitter.com/mattyglesias/status/1572896629489041410?...
ozzydave··on America Has Lost Its Oil Buffer
Oil transport is so cheap relative to the product that it’s not really a factor: https://steno.ai/planet-money/breaking-down-the-price-of-gas...
ozzydave··on Triple-dip La Niña confirmed as BoM makes declaration
Some dams have additional capacity for flood mitigation, like Wivenhoe Dam in Queensland. Unfortunately that’s not fool proof either: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010%E2%80%932011_Queensland...
ozzydave··on Thunderbolt, Displayport and Docks
This is the monitors fault though right? Because the manufacturer flashes them with the exact same identifier, so the laptop has no way to tell them apart. There was a blog post about it here recently.

ozzydave··on Ask HN: How do you organize or rename PDF files (books, papers, etc)?
I want to host a Calibre server somewhere in the cloud but not spend more than a $1 or two per month to do it. Anyone done this?
ozzydave··on Show HN: A VNC viewer for eInk devices capable of 30 FPS when writing text
Here's a font that worked for me: ```curl -Lo spleen-16x32.bdf.bdf https://raw.githubusercontent.com/fcambus/spleen/master/sple...```

Added a Dockerfile to make the build easier here: https://github.com/DaveHarrington/rM2-stuff

ozzydave··on The Economics of the Tesla Semi
I don't think it'll play out this way. There's no new tech needed to scale up recharge stations, and they can continue to scale up linearly with demand, so you'd expect the supply will increase to meet demand. Fast-charging stations are most needed near highways where land value isn't too expensive so I think you'll see a lot of solar local to the recharge stations too.
ozzydave··on Show HN: A VNC viewer for eInk devices capable of 30 FPS when writing text
Yeah, you could if you plug a keyboard into the remarkable as it’s just running Linux. The plug position is a bit awkward though.
ozzydave··on Show HN: A VNC viewer for eInk devices capable of 30 FPS when writing text
I’m doing the same, though I had to fork Yaft to get a bigger font.
ozzydave··on Show HN: A VNC viewer for eInk devices capable of 30 FPS when writing text
Do you mean "how am I SSHing to the remarkable"? That's pretty straightforward - follow https://remarkablewiki.com/tech/ssh. I'm just doing it from my laptop. You don't have to SSH though, you can plug a keyboard in as well but that's a little more involved.
ozzydave··on Show HN: A VNC viewer for eInk devices capable of 30 FPS when writing text
I've been using my Remarkable 2 as a terminal for Vim via SSH. Works a treat - like having a super capable typewriter: https://imgur.com/a/hyLjg14
ozzydave··on Solar canopies on parking lots
In this case it’s really on the executives at the utilities, who have a lot of power over the local politicians. This podcast did a great explainer: https://gimletmedia.com/shows/howtosaveaplanet/dvhz9ab
ozzydave··on Thinking with pen and paper
For me, only occasionally, but when I do it’s often a huge help - can save an immense amount of time not re-doing that work. Most of the value is in helping align my thoughts as I go though.
ozzydave··on We Need to Study Nothing
Some areas of space have a more matter than others e.g. galactic clusters, where the relative speed of the galaxies to each other is higher than the expansion. This video from the excellent Space Time series helps explain it: https://youtu.be/bUHZ2k9DYHY
ozzydave··on Ask HN: Meal Planning App?
I use Grocery too, it has a nice markdown based format.
ozzydave··on The Danger of Journaling Is Introspection
> That's why I started journaling: to be able to tell what happened in the past. Not just the big milestones, but all the little steps.

This tracks for me, especially with little kids. I feel more peaceful knowing that these days won’t just completely disappear into the past. Just knowing I can look back later gives me solace now.

ozzydave··on Dark Matter Fun
No, obviously not. Previous theories without dark matter (or MOND) aren’t sufficient to explain what we can observe. So additional complication is necessary.
ozzydave··on Compare Webb's Images to Hubble
It’s both, but the contribution from distance will be much greater than from the relative speed for an old, distant galaxy.
ozzydave··on Cheat sheet for if I'm gone
LastPass has a reasonable solution to this - your trusted person can request access, and you have a configurable amount of time to decline.
ozzydave··on Kindle, ePub, and Amazon’s love of reinventing wheels
I use a remarkable for this reason, and so I can scribble notes in the margin.
ozzydave··on Deploy to DigitalOcean from Glitch
This is cool. I’ve been running a few personal projects on Glitch for the past year, and some have grown up enough I’d like to have them run on a more robust platform. Going to give this a try.
ozzydave··on In 2019 40% of San Francisco traffic fatalities are from left turns
Has any city tried combining those HAWK Signals (flashing amber on crosswalk) triggered by a camera looking for pedestrians (/ cyclists etc)? I think that would be a cost-effective combination by making the pedestrians much more obvious.
ozzydave··on I returned my Remarkable2
No problem! https://www.icloud.com/shortcuts/5b5945a3f1a345f9aebe5c34f0c...

I got the idea from someone else but unfortunately forgotten who so can’t credit it.
