Has anyone tried writing a distributed app with Hamler ? It would be great to see an example that shows off the inbuilt messaging of erlang and the static typing of Haskell.
A competent manager is a very rare breed indeed. Competent team leads - I've had a few of those. But at any level higher than that all competence seems to fall away. Success would seem to be despite management rather than because of it.
Yeah I know where you are coming from. I was reluctant to take medication and I'd prefer not to have to take it. But when things get bad it's good to know it is there as an option and it does help. It is hard to talk to other people - can you find people with similar interests or hobbies ?
I feel exactly the same. Exercise helps. Psychologist helps a bit. Medication helps too. Talk to people. You might find that more people than you think feel similar.
According to the HBO series on Chernobyl the Russians deliberately kept no statistics on radiation related illness and deaths related to the accident. They said estimates ranged from the number you quoted to upwards of 90 000 deaths. Thanks for telling us about the Banqiao dam failure I will read more about it.
The consolidation the author is talking about is consolidation of defence aerospace contractors - Grumman, Northrup, McDonald Douglas and Boeing. McDonald Douglas was in some financial difficulties and the defence department encouraged the merger to keep them alive.
I understand that Turing and Church came up with different approaches to describing the fundamentals of computing. You can see there is a relationship between LC and LISP. My question is how did we get to the von Neumann architecture and CPU instruction sets from either Church or Turing's work ?
The article mentions the overload on the computer was caused by "a mismatched power supply to a radar" triggering too many calculations. Any idea how or why the power supply was mismatched ? Luckily software saves the day but what was the root cause of the hardware fault ? Was that a case of a mismanaged change in configuration ?
Anyone else feel like commenting on build quality and reliability of xps machines. I bought an xps 13 for my mother-in-law with the hope of minimising support calls. The motherboard failed within the first year and it took more than three onsite support visits to sort it out with Dell who eventually replaced it under warranty. We have Dell Inspiron laptops at work and they are bearly useable heaps of junk. Hoped the xps range was better but based on my sample of one,it doesn't look like it.
They will have to fix the simulator first. As I understand it they can't currently simulate the handling of the aircraft under MCAS failure modes. If they correct the simulator and require pilots to train for the handling of MCAS failures then I have to problem with the reintroduction of the max on the same type certificate. From what we are hearing in the press it sounds like Boeing is still pressing for nothing more that a dumb iPad lesson. If the FAA falls for that they will loose all credibility in my eyes.
I agree that the coal industry does have a big influence over both parties. I'm sure donations do have a big influence but I think there is also the fact that coal mining does contribute a significant amount to the economy as outlined in the article. Also labour is influenced by the fact that its member unions represent members that are employed in coal mining. I agree with the greens to some extent. Coal mining is definitely bad for the environment, puts the barrier Reef at risk and contributes to global warming. It's easy to say just ban the Adani mine but you need to have a real plan to replace the economic loss and the loss of jobs. Tourism and technology and green industries are the obvious areas to target but there needs to be a real plan as opposed to hand waving and broad statements.
A very well written article that covers all sides of the debate. This issue has all but paralyzed the government of the country for at least the last three parliaments. It looks like this election will still be close with no side being able to win a commanding majority. Unfortunately it looks like we are going to get more of the same indecision and inaction.
Say I have my genome on 23andme is there a related SNP I could search for to see if I have the variant of the gene ? Not that I’m anxious about this or anything
This is pretty rubbish. AOA disagree would have been a good clue to what was going wrong and it sounds like it should have been a standard safety feature. It's hard to believe that this was made optional. You have to question the level of testing and the certification process as a whole. This MCAS disaster is a stain on Boeing and the FAA's reputation. I hope the FAA is going to come down harder on the reintroduction of the 737 max than recent media reports indicate.
I'm am conflicted over the whole tesla thing. The model S is a truly great car but I can't stand Elon's hype about self driving cars etc, etc. The model 3 got off to a rocky start but it sounds like the quality issues are improving. On the one hand I want them to succeed as they have been real innovators but by the same token when musk goes around hyping things up to create interest and bump up the stock price I would be happy to see them crash and burn.
The software fixes as described sound sensible and it's hard to believe they were not in the original design. Unfortunately I don't see how these changes will allow them to keep a common type rating with the 737 NG. After the updated MCAS has made its one shot trim adjustment you will now be flying an aircraft with different handling characteristics if you keep increasing the angle of attack into the stall. Surely the FAA can't sign off on the common type rating and half hour of video training ??
I'm with you on that. It also seems completely against the Boeing ethos of when the auto pilot is off you should be hand flying the plane and your control inputs dictate the movement of the flight surfaces. That has been a perceived difference in philosophy between Boeing and Airbus. MCAS sounds like a hastly thrown together work around and a disaster waiting to happen.
One story I heard was that one of the production engineers added a rivet in the skin near the corners of the window. This was added because he thought it would strengthen the structure. Unfortunately it actually acted as an additional stress concentrator. I'm not entirely sure there wouldn't have been an issue without that extra rivet. The guy that made that change thought he was doing the right things but in fact made things much worse.
I have been taking Effexor for more than 10 years. Two years ago I thought it was no longer being effective for me so I tried to taper down and stop taking the mediation. Over a period of weeks I dropped down from 150 mg to 37.5 mg. I could not drop from 37.5 mg - I experienced complete insomnia and terrible anxiety and I started to experience tinnitus. I went back to see a psychiatrist who initially didnt believe that everything I was experiencing was due to withdrawal - I had to fill one of my old scripts and prescribe myself my original dose of Effexor to get back to some semblance of normality. My anxiety and sleep levels returned to normal but although the tinnitus lessened its still there today. I worked with my doctor and eventually decided to increase the Effexor dose and it has helped greatly with my anxiety and depression. Apparently there arent many people who have reported tinnitus as an Effexor sessation side-effect. My doctor says it must just be coincidence - anyone else experience the same thing ? Just a word of caution to anyone thinking of stopping their medication - do it slowly and with the support of a doctor. I thought I knew what I was doing but I probably reduced my dosage too quickly and maybe this ringing in my ears is the price I pay.
Everyday I daydream about escaping the daily grind. I know the problem is really me and how I respond to stress. Basically whenever I work an issue I feel inadequate. I think someone else would have found a solution quicker or a better solution. I procrastinate and then rush to get something done and then beat myself up. I don't cope well with all the corporate b.s and religious wars over agile etc. Does anyone have any tips on coping with the stress of daily life as a developer ?
