overu589··on Elements of a Durable Civilization
What happened to the “building cities to last generations” trend?

I find it a shame to see a stadium torn down which could have been converted into a township of housing, commerce, craft and industry.

Like the dead modern malls. Zoning and impenetrable policy machines keep artisans and experimental communities from making use of these spaces.

Civilization is what is made of it.

overu589··on Ask HN: Is This Burnout?
Find other work or be grateful for stability?

You could go deeper inside, like a samurai code monk, and let nothing of impermanence affect you.

Either way, the burnout comes the days after the crash! Best way to not burn out is not crash!

Stay off stimulants, eat decently and exercise regularly, these will clear the mind and stave off burnout like it is a pesky cold that only comes when you are too lazy in your ways you didn’t see it coming!

overu589··on Show HN: Steel.dev – An open-source browser API for AI agents and apps
Very interesting. I’m not sure I immediately see your application either however I have been having similar thoughts.

After playing a popular indi game (Kenshi) I was wondering about the very simple automation interface the game relies upon. Why not a virtual world (with interfaces attaching any external source) in which business logic agents interact through the available interfaces of the environment, and other agents. Though tbh, I imagine the entire environment as implemented in layers of YAML style schemas and profiles. So all data, whether in a datastore, active instance, streamed or serialized can be related to in the same way. An envelope with attributes and content specified by the type attribute. The only code would then be the rendering environment, and whatever these agents call for stream processing.

Sort of a gamification of automation, though what can’t be beat is dead simple account of what any one thing is doing at a given time.

overu589··on Kids are getting ruder, teachers say. And new research backs that up
And there is that recent study assuring us every generation thinks things are just turning more to shit.
overu589··on Can Fiction Improve You?
For sure! Every new idea we grapple in our minds is a layer of complex world view our minds are prepared to scale to. Fiction is also a great playing field for our philosophies. Maybe also to ego stroke ourselves (modern?)
overu589··on Show HN: My Remote Teaching Station (Mk IV)
Nice man!
overu589··on Data is the new uranium – incredibly powerful and dangerous
I perceive this as the kind of think tank scare piece which motivates politically irresponsible paranoia.

We all know every API can be traced and logged and tapped throughout the physical internet. It is regardlessly plain that human incompetence and neglect are the leading causes for vulnerabilities in our infrastructure of everything.

I suppose those efforts to recruit the new generations into opsec and infosec are more inspirational.

Is this like, “the invisible hand”, explained?
overu589··on Designing a Conscious Machine
Oh, you got me. Too casual a read, and you switched to acronyms so I didn’t catch my association. It’s great that you’re exploring these ideas, though it still feels like the computer is tabulating.
overu589··on Optimizing the Time and Dose of Melatonin as a Sleep-Promoting Drug
Totally! I only ever take HALF of a pill and that always works for me. Taking too much only means you’ll have twice the trouble next time!
overu589··on Designing a Conscious Machine
> and then, obviously, into seeing the immediate truth of "there is a true sentence";

This is not actually an obvious link.

The thinking therefore is connection is not one of sentience, rather of EXISTENCE.

Existing is proven by the thought of it. Sentience is your assumption.

The rest digresses from there. All that stuff about language and sentience and etc.

Sorry bud, I know you thought you were on to something.

Existing based upon reflection is one thing, that other stuff is an extrapolation!

overu589··on Ask HN: Why do many AI experts care so much about AI safety?
Remember the 14 year old who committed suicide over the chat bot? Or those people who will eat glue on pizza because some LLM told them so? Or those lawyers (and now medical professionals) who use notably incorrect generated content?

The consumer cannot be trusted, so the producers’ bear the legal (and social) obligations.

Are you sure their vapid stare is not “wtf” without words?
overu589··on Claude Shannon: Mathematician, Engineer, Genius and Juggler?
It’s funny seeing Shannon as an old man. Yeah, sure, it was a long time ago and everyone gets old. For some reason, in my mind’s eye he is immortalized as the ~35yr old of his prime.
overu589··on Ask HN: How do I consolidate all my messaging services into ont big dashboard?
Trello?

I haven’t used it in … years, so I don’t know if it supports everything you need, though that was its original intended purpose

overu589··on Ask HN: What would you preserve if the internet were to go down tomorrow?
I have downloaded nearly 2TB in archives from the interweb, just in case the whole civilization thing were to “go down tomorrow.”

If you would like to begin preparing for your tomorrows, this is a good place to start: https://the-eye.eu/public/Books/

overu589··on Ask HN: Did Elon Musk buy Twitter for a political agenda?
> You're the one … evidence to back it up.

Okay, okay! Fair enough!

> And the only difference …

I’m not sure you’re right about that stuff. I think some are more casual (“go with the flow”) on this translation. Others “scheme”. I don’t think Musk is a “schemer”. I think he’s a lost billionaire man child who should stfu and get back to rockets and cars. Rockets and cars! Can you believe this guy? Wtf!

overu589··on Organic foods are not healthier or pesticide free
What did I say? I just described everyone I know.
overu589··on Ask HN: Did Elon Musk buy Twitter for a political agenda?
You are naive to speak so against absolutely anyone. Or a hypocrite. Everywhere everyone is “politically motivated.” That’s different than “an agenda”. I see it as his boy toy. He’s the big boy, twitter/X is his ego toy. (Look how he hops around the stage with trump. What antics. He’s trippin.)

I wonder why my OC was negged. Some liked it, now it’s flat. This down vote thing should be more conversational. It’s like chatting with ghosts.

I don’t think my comment was provocative at all. Only an honest take.

overu589··on Organic foods are not healthier or pesticide free
They’re probably less heathy due to their lack of engineering.

I think people do it so they aren’t environmentally dirt bags. I’m sure the bits of plastic grocers sometimes add drive them crazy, though they’ll still pay twice as much for something maybe a little less attractive so they’re not the ones poisoning things.

overu589··on Ask HN: Why is functional code more readable than Python-style comprehensions?
Python comprehensions are a clever language shim. Functional code is an ode to scala/haskell/erlang in a way that any language should advantage.
overu589··on Ask HN: Did Elon Musk buy Twitter for a political agenda?
No. Musk did not purchase twitter for this purpose.

Musk like many men is susceptible to influence my his peer group.

Remember that talk in the beginning with Dorsey?

I imagine this part: Musk and Dorsey having their billionaire bromance phone chat. “Someone needs to go in there and clean house” (remember the sink?) “tech has lost its way, too much woke modern luv” (remember the purge?)

Remember his outed phone texts? All this cryptic cronyism with the big boys and their “everyone else just doesn’t get it” attitude?

I think he believed that crap he was telling himself when he bought the place, and I’m sure he always wanted “X” (his vision) and twitter was a host body for his assimilation.

Musk cannot choose between being an effective entrepreneur and a social-political force of opinionated change (ego eccentric).

I’m pretty sure Dorsey talked him into it with passive language and Musk thought he was the white knight who was going to “show everybody”.

This Trump business is simply more of that ego centricity flaring his billionaire brain.

Even Trump is hardly the man he was in his earlier days.

Power drives men insane.

That’s my take.
