outime··on Pfizer and Biontech provide update on Omicron variant
In many countries where vaccination rates are very high (think of Spain, Portugal...) the infection cases have been increasing yet people in the hospital or deaths caused by/with the virus have been rather low. Attribute it to vaccines, natural immunity, a potentially weaker variant - or everything at the same time but my point is: I agree with you, at least when it comes to these highly-vaccinated countries.

I wish we would just stop looking at infection rates as it's never going to change as long as the virus exists (and continues to mutate) and/or a sterilizing vaccine of sorts shows up and people take it.

outime··on AWS us-east-1 outage
Then you could just keep a local copy available as a fallback in case the latest code cannot be fetched. Not doing the bare minimum and screwing the end user isn't acceptable IMHO. But I also understand that'd take some engineer hours and report virtually no benefits as these outages are rare (not sure how Roomba's reliability is in general on the other hand) so here we are.
outime··on PHP is worth learning and using
I haven't commented on this thread until now (I left PHP so many years ago, I have nothing to add) but are you suggesting to never discuss with other peers about the available tools for the job? Could you be more specific on your proposal?
outime··on DoorDash Joins Forces with Wolt
I've never used pyszne but if I ever use such service I'd use my CC to pay and if I never get a refund I'd just file a chargeback. Sure, they may just ban you but you get your money back and you don't have to deal with their bs anymore.
outime··on Covid lesson: trust the public with hard truths
I personally think we should stop labeling a whole diverse group under the most stupid categorization we can think of. Media is also guilty of this, for example when some outlet posted something like “anti-vaxxers are now drinking betadine” despite being an isolated act of stupidity. This type of confrontation will only yield more division and therefore enhance distrust.
outime··on Covid lesson: trust the public with hard truths
What’s more interesting is that most of these people will survive this episode (given the known mortality data) and thus will “win” the debate (from their point of view) and will never ever trust the government (or health authorities) again. That’s the biggest downside in reality, and regaining the trust is going to be extremely complicated.
outime··on What we learn from twitch source code leak
This snippet has been constantly criticized and somehow it makes me think that the people who loudly complain about it have never worked in any kind of big company - which is fine but it shows a lack of empathy, experience or both. You can go to any big company around the world and you'll find duct tape because you know what, if it works, it isn't terrible to use/update and doesn't leak millions in lost revenue then there's no valid reason to spend dev time on that.

This most likely was a temporary solution that grew over time and was left like it, they just kept adding new combinations. It works. If you want to add a new combination you just add it and run a migration (or similar, I've not worked on Twitch but I assume it's not the most difficult thing in the world if it's still like this).

I understand that this can feel like an itch that you really need to scratch (I also feel it) but if you literally see the source codes of any big company you'll find stuff that anyone can criticize from their chair with little effort. Let's now go build a tremendously successful platform like Twitch without cutting a single corner ever and see how that goes.

outime··on U.S. Covid Death Toll Surpasses 700k Despite Availability of Vaccines
This is going to sound cynical but what you suggest doesn’t make money so there’ll never be such campaign in US unless there’s a way to make more money out of it compared to the current state of things - which is very difficult. The entire health care industry and policies in US are atrocious.
outime··on Amazon reaches agreement with trade unions in Italy
It must be real challenging to browse the web without an adblocker.
outime··on Why Erlang?
This doesn’t prevent bugs (if we’re talking about logical ones), it prevents extended outages because of them. In other words, if the application crashes you can log such fact and fix it later while your end users won’t notice a problem on your side in the right circumstances (unless it’s a crash loop which can’t be temporarily solved by restarting).
outime··on The future is in symmetrical, high-speed internet speeds
> This might be a deal the housing cooperative (equivalent) has with the operator though, I'm only renting.

Yes it is. I imagine most of the people upgrade the base speed amyway and you can get it pretty cheap e.g. 100/100 for 10 €/month which IMHO is very reasonable. I wish other countries like Spain would follow this model because it’s very affordable for everyone.

outime··on Secret Management in Kubernetes
Besides what others have pointed out about the base64 comment which is very unfortunate coming from RedHat... this is a very superficial article which doesn’t really explain how to actually store secrets safely.

I found happiness by either using AWS KMS (I assume other clouds offerings can do the same) by then storing the encrypted blob in K8s Secrets or through the Vault sidecar approach (obviously when using Vault only).

outime··on Facebook will start putting ads in Oculus Quest apps
I didn't feel it'd be necessary to specify to what I'm referring to from your short comment but to answer your question yes, I'm arguing with this particular part of your post:

>Can we officially admit that fb not only killed the oculus brand but perhaps even tarnished public opinion of this generation of VR?

This is just simply not true. There's absolutely no proof whatsoever that the Oculus brand is dead. In fact, it's one of the most popular if not the most in some platforms. And I also don't see how FB has "tarnished public opinion" of this generation of VR since again it's one of the most popular which is rather incompatible with that. Perhaps you have data that I don't have, in such case please share it so I can learn.

What you wanted to say, perhaps, is: "can we agree that in our small bubble, the Oculus brand is dead" which would argueably be not true either as I anecdotically now many HN readers who own them and are very happy but it'd perhaps be a bit closer to the current situation.

My whole point is, here there's a lot of hate towards certain companies. I share it to some extent as well but I'm definitely going to point out when nonsense is being spread in comments like yours. Your comment was simply not true and got upvotes of people who dislike FB which is a very respectable position but I thought we could do better and not promote fake facts just because it harms some company we (in general) dislike.

And no, not meant to be insulting. I don't see how can I be insulting by pointing out your comment isn't correct or to be precise, in fact, I'm answering your stated question: "Can we officially admit that ..." - no, we can't. The data shows otherwise.

And a finishing disclaimer: I don't have hidden interests towards FB or work for them in some indirect way. The only thing I have is WhatsApp, the rest I stopped using very long time ago. I won't buy Oculus for the reasons you and others state. But I'm not blind and I know that most of the people don't care at all and will buy. In other words, the majority of the people won't stop buying it because FB owns it or it requires FB login or they do data harvesting or all of those things combined.

outime··on Facebook will start putting ads in Oculus Quest apps
Such strong statements on this website with no facts presented whatsoever never ceases to amaze me. “I hate FB therefore you gotta agree everyone else does as well”.

Outside of our little bubble most of the people really don’t care even if we’re talking about VR. As another commenter said it’s actually the most popular VR and that could’ve been found through a quick search but then the feeling to impose our own reality to others seem to be sometimes stronger. And this is the top comment at the time of writing...

outime··on Poll: Only 18 Percent of Germans Feel Free to Voice Views in Public (2019)
An important reminder about the existence of the silent majority which won't cease to exist even if you keep shaming them for their ideas.
outime··on California Senate Approves Bill to Legalize Psychedelics Like Psilocybin and LSD
As a counterpoint, psilocybin forced me to make uncomfortable changes in my life in just two sessions and absolutely zero effects, also very cheap. But then it took a couple months preparing myself to do it properly and with someone. It saved my life.

I’m sorry about your friend. I don’t know anything about her so what I’ll say is in no way related to her (also ayahuasca is a different beast). One of the big warnings is that you should never take them if you took psychiatric medication last year or your family has a history of serious psychiatric problems. Another one is that you definitely have to have a proper set and setting so you have someone who supports you in case you see something that’s way too scary so you can rationalize it.

I highly recommend “How to change your mind” from Michael Pollan to understand how these things are helping a lot of people but also to understand the inherent risks. For many people it was the only thing that saved them from suicide.

outime··on Europe’s cookie consent reckoning is coming
How are they supposed to collect fines then?
outime··on Three things to never build yourself: auth, notifications, payments
I understand that you want to promote your solution and you have a disclaimer in the previous comment - and that's great. But if you keep insisting then you should IMHO at least provide some reasons on why your solution may be better than e.g. Keycloak and not just posting the name a couple times and see if it sticks.
outime··on Online cheating charges upend Dartmouth Medical School
I don’t think OP meant otherwise, it was just a description of what being a med student entails because the submission is about med students.
outime··on Hardening macOS (2018)
>Not that I've ever done anything wrong, ...

When you see that people need to write this disclaimer even on this website it feels like the privacy ship has long sailed.

outime··on Vegan cheese has quietly but steadily infiltrated mainstream supermarket shelves
Yeah I have exactly this. I tolerate small amounts but I avoid it on a daily basis. And I do love cheese but ain’t worth it. Lactose-free (aka adding lactase) helps sligthly but it seems it’s not the only thing causing trouble to me. All in all, we’re lucky we have alternatives.
outime··on Tracking the WhatsApp habits of random smartphones
I'd say a sample of 5000 random phone numbers is more representative than individual comments from a community obsessed (in a positive way) with privacy.
outime··on Tracking the WhatsApp habits of random smartphones
>Nobody uses Signal in France [from the 5000 sample]

If one would've come to HN and read the last few months worth of posts you'd come to think that a lot of people from around the world moved to Signal. But then again this is a reminder about how little HN represents compared to the general population's tech choices.

outime··on When 70M people visit your joke site
I also understood it that way but I can understand how some folks may get it the other way.
outime··on Zorin OS 16
I’m not talking about people who can’t afford paying and needing one, but even those can find a designer to help them if the project is interesting enough. I have done it myself and it’s been good for everyone involved. But my comment was targeted to the “I could totally afford a designer but I’m good enough myself” when most of the time is just ego speaking.
outime··on Zorin OS 16
Totally agree. I don’t understand why so many programmers insist on designing stuff themselves. Except few exceptions we all suck at that (but then I admire people who are good at both).
outime··on Embrace the Grind
>Which is why it's so utterly toxic that corporate America runs on an interrupt driven system, with meetings sprinkled carelessly across engineer calendars.

As a person who’s worked in both american and european big companies... I can tell it’s not an american illness only and I have heard the same from asian friends. Best I got was one or two meeting-free days (at least on paper, in reality these would be ignored as well). I just got used to these things.

outime··on Netscape ISP Homepage
WiFi range extenders usually implies same home and same family members and not the house down the hill so neighbors don’t need to pay their own. It’s a bit absurd though since that house wouldn’t be able to pay their own in this case.
outime··on Signal Server code on GitHub is up to date again
Even if you have access to an up-to-date source code it doesn't guarantee at all they'd be running a completely different version if so they wish. I mean this have just happened yet this question kind of implies you'd still trust such entity to run the server from the source code you have access to. I hope this collective illusion dies already.
outime··on On Cache Invalidation: Why Is It Hard? (2018)
>Is it okay if the item is gone, but the cache remains for just a little window of time? If not, can we remove it from the cache first, then for real?

This is typically called eventual consistency [1] which is common when working with distributed systems, the same way you may write an entry and doesn’t become immediately available. This is often the case on my day to day work and you “just” have to work under the assumption that data isn’t the most recent sometimes.
