outime··on The car is not the future: On the myth of motorized freedom
I'd say the decline is happening (in my experience) in most public services, not just transport.

But anyway, I'm purposely staying away from discussing politics here since it's pointless, so I'll just share my experience as a public transport end-user, and the rest can fill in the gaps with their perspectives.

outime··on The car is not the future: On the myth of motorized freedom
It's interesting how people's positions can be so different. As a European who has lived in two (european) countries with good and affordable transport, I've always been a happy public transport user... until a couple of years ago, that is. Much of the transport is now filled with unpleasant people, dirt, delays, etc which paired with the insane prices of housing in the "walkable" parts of cities, has made me 100% invested in the myth of motorized freedom.
outime··on Windows 11 Update KB5063878 Causing SSD Failures
Torvalds* but I'm sure he'd not mind the extra H :)
outime··on I Bought an N100 Mini PC, Then Another
The latest RPi prices were outrageous when I checked, so I started looking for alternatives. I ended up getting a pretty nice N100 with much more RAM, an actual SSD, and more - all for just a bit more money. It’s been performing really well, and I also use it for Jellyfin among other things. I couldn’t recommend the setup more.
outime··on Fastmail breaks UI in production
I'm not a Fastmail user, but... if I were paying a company to read my emails and they shipped a new build that broke that feature due to a lack of basic testing, I'd be publicly "shaming" them.
outime··on Things that helped me get out of the AI 10x engineer imposter syndrome
Nitpick (since I couldn't leave a comment there, hopefully author reads it):

> It tends to struggle with languages like Terraform

The language is called HCL (HashiCorp Configuration Language).

outime··on Jokes and Humour in the Public Android API
It's even worse when you stumble upon a repo with already poor documentation, only to find it filled with silly jokes e.g. "You thought this would be easy, right? Well, that's what X thought too, but..." yeah, leave the storytelling aside please.
outime··on Adipose tissue retains an epigenetic memory of obesity after weight loss
Yeah, what you said is key - and I can also vouch that it's absolutely possible to keep it away for good, aside from small setbacks that almost everyone experiences, since we’re not robots.

The word diet is problematic because most people see it as something temporary. But you can't just eat healthy to lose weight and then go back to old habits, expecting the weight to stay off. That just doesn't make sense.

Also for many people, food isn’t just about pleasure - it’s also a way to deal with boredom, stress, depression, and so on. So even if someone sticks to a diet, if the psychological root causes are still there, it's going to be hard to stay away from junk food.

outime··on Bluesky's Quest to Build Nontoxic Social Media
I used to think like that, but now I believe the vast majority of those discussions are inherently toxic, so I just don’t bring them up anymore in almost any context, whether it's work, friends, family, or social networks (if I still used them, that is). It just brings so much unhappiness, and there's nothing to "gain", especially nowadays when you're constantly bombarded by social media, the media, or whatever else is pushing you in whatever direction is convenient at the time.

Let’s be honest, most political posts here get flagged and disappear almost immediately, especially if they lean a certain way. I’m not specifying which direction I think they lean because people will interpret it differently, and it would be pointless. It's yet another example of why, in most cases, it’s toxic.

outime··on Bluesky's Quest to Build Nontoxic Social Media
If you ban politics, someone will just say you're playing politics.

I personally think the idea of creating a place that suits everyone is unrealistic. It will never happen, and there will always be something that offends one side or the other. It seems like open social networks will always be toxic (whatever that really means).

outime··on AI agents: Less capability, more reliability, please
Technically, they could be using version control, not have a copy on their local machine for some reason, and have an AI agent issue a `git push -f` wiping out all the previous work.
outime··on Internet shutdowns at record high in Africa as access 'weaponised'
I know the current situation isn't the most optimal but barely working is an extreme hyperbole.
outime··on Zero-Downtime Kubernetes Deployments on AWS with EKS
>Instead you can take k8s, deploy it to bare metal, and have a much much more power for a much lower cost. Of course this requires some technical knowledge, but the benefits are significant (lower costs, stable costs, no vendor lock-in, all the postgres extensions you want, response times halved, etc).

>all the postgres extensions you want

You can run Postgres in any managed K8s environment (say AWS EKS) just fine and enable any extensions you want as well. Unless you're conflating managed Postgres solutions like RDS, which would imply that the only way to run databases is by using a managed service of your cloud of choice, which obviously isn't true.

outime··on Apple unveils new Mac Studio
You seriously don't get why?
outime··on Geothermal power is a climate moon shot beneath our feet
At least here in Finland, it’s becoming more and more common for houses to use this kind of energy. I’ve even noticed a few isolated apartment blocks using it. Finland obviously requires a lot of heat, and it seems that everyone I know who uses it is happy, so it’s certainly interesting technology.
outime··on Migraine is more than a headache – a rethink offers hope
As someone who has healed from some weird conditions by doing what you suggest (specially diet), I would be cautious about implying that everyone else is on the same path. Some people may have excellent diets and sleep schedules but still suffer from migraines or other debilitating conditions.

While I agree that lifestyle factors are often overlooked, especially in the West where we tend to medicalize every symptom, sometimes the root cause of the issue remains unknown. Suggesting that it's always due to something like not following a proper diet can be harmful.

outime··on Migraine is more than a headache – a rethink offers hope
I tried to find this advice in the thread but couldn’t, and I’m surprised since it’s surprisingly common!

Some sweeteners such as aspartame can trigger migraines (also some gut issues) depending on the quantity and person. While most of the people can take them just fine in principle, others suffer migraines a while after taking them. In my case, this was a relative who suffered a lot until finding out by pure chance that certain sweeteners where the reason, but you can find countless cases.

outime··on Privacy Pass Authentication for Kagi Search
The biggest flaw I always saw in Kagi has now been addressed by this. Thank you for listening and working to make the product appealing to (almost) everyone!
outime··on Firing programmers for AI is a mistake
Has there been any company so far that has fired 100% of their programmers to replace them with AI?
outime··on Swede dreams: How Sweden is embracing its sleepy side
It's very similar in Finland (they're called mökki here). Even though I'm not native, I do get the appeal of these holidays. It feels like staying in a very natural, raw place without all the modern conveniences. It's a feature, and not for everyone, but I personally love it.
outime··on My Struggle with Doom Scrolling
Shutting down the noise may help to find out the causes.
outime··on Ask HN: Those making $500/month on side projects in 2024 – Show and tell
Another thing I've noticed is that the logo for this thing in Curpress is broken.
outime··on Ask HN: Those making $500/month on side projects in 2024 – Show and tell
Congrats! Time to update the © years? It may look abandoned to the newbies.
outime··on Leaving WordPress (.org or WPF, still unsure which one)
It's just over-the-top statements causing pointless drama.
outime··on Phrase matching in Marginalia Search
This comment felt like indirect spam, as it doesn't really contribute anything IMHO. The phrase "in our experience" implies they’re in the same business, and upon checking the profile, I found that aside from the bio linking to their own thing, most comments resemble (in)direct spam. Everyone has their strategies, but I really disliked seeing this.
outime··on 91% of polled Amazon staff unhappy with RTO, 3-in-4 want to jump ship
I don't work in Amazon nor I have any particular information about this (although I have friends working there) but isn't this the intention in most companies that implement RTO against employees' wishes? There's always some collateral damage when virtually irreplaceable people jump ship but this is definitely planned. It's a cheap way to get rid of headcount. It only works when most big companies agree to do it at roughly the same timeline, otherwise people will just switch companies - RTO is too big of a perk to ignore, specially if you have a family.
outime··on EU ChatControl is back on the agenda
For me, they can GTFO in any case. Some EU law won't make "special" people comply with it or be punished for not doing so.
outime··on Low Cost Mini PCs
This is neat, although I have a word of caution (even if it might be a bit obvious): it's possible to find good deals, but you should be aware of power usage. There are modern mini PCs, such as those with Intel N100 processors, that are very cheap and consume very few watts while being useful for many purposes. I personally bought a brand-new CHUWI LarkBox X, and it's been great. It cost around 100 EUR on a deal. If however power usage isn't an issue for you and you don't care about other misc stuff (noise levels etc) then you can disregard this.
outime··on IRC Will Never Die (2021)
I began using IRC before the age of 10, creating fond memories along the way. But let's face the harsh reality: IRC has largely become obsolete for most purposes. The alternatives available now are not only more user-friendly but also offer superior functionality for the general population, so I highly doubt IRC will become popular once again anytime. While it is sad, why would anyone choose to use outdated 90s technology that poses challenges for the average user when there are more advanced and accessible options?
outime··on The News Is Information Junk Food (2022)
But why would you bother with this? If you want to know last year's unemployment rate objectively speaking, then you just head to wherever the statistics are published by your government and see it yourself. Well, if you can trust your government's statistics that is (and this is an extremely important "if").

So I doubt people are coming to a news site to read a one-liner with some statistic, they want more development, perhaps adding some opinions in between, comparing it with previous governments, whatever.

But yeah, there's not much business in a "news site" that'd just copy-paste statistics.
