osacial··on Why do we value gold?
There are 3d printers out there, that are designed to print gold, but they all cost the same regardless of metal that you want to print.
osacial··on Why do we value gold?
It is possible to create gold out of thin air - side effect is radioactivity.
osacial··on Why do we value gold?
What this article is getting wrong is that gold is not used as currency in everyday use. You don't see anyone paying with small sized golden coins for one reason - gold is soft metal, that wears out easily. And gold is very recent currency in the history of humans - it became part of currency(with bunch of other metals), for those societies, that had metallurgy capabilities and could measure and cut metals and exchange them with other people - provided, they saw value in those metals(and valued work that has to be done to extract those metals).

Currency by itself is abstract - it does not exist in nature(you can't see it in periodic table) and value is what we agree upon. If we can come to an agreement, that gold must cost something, then we can agree that also bitcoin costs something, as similar to gold, to make and maintain bitcoin, there must be some value put into it.

There still exist stone currency in Pacific. They weight heavily - some of them are still used, even if they have sunk to the bottom of the ocean and no one can say if they exist, but people use them and have accepted that they still exist, so they are virtual coins, that are predating bitcoin by millenia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rai_stones

Gold as such means absolutely nothing in modern economy - the main unifying currency is work, that has to be done to generate product. Digging out ore and extracting gold or other metals costs manhours - if the work is done by robots, then they still need to use energy+hours. In the end final product is valued by how much you need to put effort into getting it. Same applies to gold - go and mine gold from contacts of electric appliances and see how much of your time and equipment it is worth.

osacial··on Vertical farming does not save space
There are many empty spaces created because of factories moved to China or because people are ordering from amazon(and supermarkets have closed down) and even in covid times people need to eat, while rest of the business in city has been shut down.

It does not make much sense to grow wheat, but it makes sense to grow spices or other products that are transported from afar and which can be grown local indoors instead. Also, those vertical(and indoor) farms use LEDs, that consume much less energy - not to mention, that plants do not need that much light, than what is needed for humans to feel comfortable.

osacial··on Lithuania plans to hold drills in case of accident at the Belarus nuclear plant
Columbia had 28 missions - 28 launches and 27 successful landings. There has been no Russian space vessel, that has been launched more than 1 time into space. Even Buran space shuttle had only 1 mission, before it was abandoned.

I wouldn't comment on quality of cars, as I do not own any Russian car - and I also do not own any nuclear submarine(yet), but what we know is that Russians can't properly build bunker for their own fuhrer and Nuclear plant is less significant project.

osacial··on Lithuania plans to hold drills in case of accident at the Belarus nuclear plant
Well, people in Latvia were very upset about plant in Ignalina - not because of the distance from Riga, but because of a very close distance from border of Latvia(because not all of them are living in Riga).

I guess, this is a very political topic and that has nothing to do with technical parameters of plants, because Belarus is constantly polluting rivers and that pollution is coming through into neighbouring countries. And there is nothing that these countries can do about and power plant belongs to the same issue.

Yeah, your commenting activity doesn't seem to be Russian troll at all to readers of NH, but for someone who has to encounter similar active trolls in Baltic sources, this doesn't seem like credible non-troll activity(paid or unpaid - doesn't matter). So, under a threat of being blocked here, I think, that it should be noted that some of the behaviour of cbmuser(and accompanying friends and "opponents") ticks most of the flags of what in Baltics is known under a name of "Russian troll factory", where they are actively swarming on specific topics.

osacial··on Vertical farming does not save space
Vertical farm in a city fits in economical sense, as their market is there, while farmers have to haul their product to consumers.
osacial··on Iran's blogfather: Facebook, Instagram and Twitter are killing the web
That is too simplified look about what he is complaining about.

Internet in current state doesn't offer meaningful way for humans to communicate and connect with each other - it has turned from Agora into a dog walking space with erected poles to urinate on them - that is a great way to communicate for dogs, but a really big setback from the hopes that internet initially gave(for humans).

facebook demographics has changed a lot as well - it is getting popularity in non-English speaking world, but it is on a path of decline. I do not use facebook(and many friends are off facebook as well), but my mother interestingly does use facebook a lot, because it is a great tool to do marketing - even if the marketing consists of spreading ideas. The problem about mentioned social apps is that facebook, twitter, instagram can't be treated as something more than tools for marketing and approaching them as communication tools is a failure. Blogs initially offered more as a tools for communication, though most of them nowadays have evolved into online TV, to better serve the audience. Even some journalist I was following and reading articles now does regular podcast on youtube - though most of the reason for it is that this way is easier to earn money.

"The web wasn't killed by companies, it selected the companies that catered most to what most people actually want out of the web." That is false statement from the marketing point of view, where people actually do not know what they want. There are many clones of apps out there and even with better functionality and all the problems fixed that are present on current apps an we can wonder why no one uses them... There are also too many examples of how some of the great companies were killed off by intent and has nothing to do with how web is functioning whatsoever.

osacial··on How to create your own country
Any of those shoals are identified outside of current EEZ, which is ~250 miles, however any neighbouring country can make claims to all those shoals as soon as they became islands, simply because of extended seabed or any other reasons - one of those is that they simply might not recognize such neighbours. If new owners of shoal can defend their rights from existing nations, then they could succeed, however, this opens can of worms, because most of the ocean is unclaimed and with automation in near future it is possible to make artificial islands regardless of any depth of the ocean - as a side product from deep sea mining.

This post however misses other exciting and less expensive chapters how to make your own country and succeed in doing so:

1. How to invade other country and make it your own?

2. How to organize a coup and overthrow government of already existing country and make it your own?

3. How to steal a country and pretend to rule it?

Ah, the possibilities... most of them are already executed and in action.

osacial··on EU Commission: ‘No longer acceptable’ for platforms to take key decisions alone
In 2019 Court in NY in final instance denied Trump rights to ban twitter users(even the ones, that did not belong to US citizens) based on the The First Amendment to the United States Constitution, which is guaranteeing Free Speech.

I assume, that he was not allowed to ban people who were simply toxic and posted death threats - all the things that are considered norm in twitter(but other users are able to ban at least some of them to maintain healthy discussion). Also, it is not consistent with how just recently twitter allowed all those death wishes, when it was announced, that Trump had covid.

And I am even more curious about banning of other key Republican politicians - on what grounds? Were they also inciting violence?

osacial··on How Silicon Valley destroyed Parler
>"compliance with laws"

that is something that has to be proven in court, before playing any such cards

If that is the case and you defend it, then this is a very unique situation, where law is not enforced by state institution, but by Google, Apple and Amazon. The question is what law? As clearly it is not US law.

If there is breach to the law, then there should be article Nr of breached law, otherwise all of these arguments are nonsensical. Nowhere in the world - even in Saudi Arabia it is possible to be judged and sentenced by unwritten law - by nongovernmental entities. Otherwise it is unlawful lynching by mob and there are countries that allow those, but US kinda positioned themselves as a country that guarantees The Law. Now that guarantee does not work.

osacial··on EU Commission: ‘No longer acceptable’ for platforms to take key decisions alone
True, though the bad light is not that some companies and groups in US are limiting Free Speech, but because US government has lost monopoly on violence, judging others and dealing punishment. All they key components that holds together any state - with or without Free Speech(which exists only few centuries or so).

We do not know with whom we have to deal with - US government that is represented by People - including ELECTED President, or Thing that is not controlled by law and does not need to abide to it and can do as it wishes - just like terrorists. Essentially at this point US does not exist - when the Thing, that will arise in place in US will start to abide to law and make agreements with others, then others will be more relaxed, but currently Democracy citadel of the whole World has ended. No one is going to take US as an example anymore and it would take a lot of work to gain that position where US once was and usually there is no way to climb back after such actions.

Not to mention what this all is causing to current World Order, where no one is going to seriously take US - all the doors that are now opened for all the shit to pour out.

osacial··on Autism and Invention Are Connected
Anti-social people are actually very social - they just do anti-social things to others.

Asocial people on other side are not social, but they don't do any anti-social things - because that would mean that they have to socialize and that is opposite to being asocial.

Autistic people are not anti-survivalists, as by definition they have hightened fight-flight response, so they want to survive, however they have to really depend on society(humans by definition are social animals) to provide them survivable environment, so they could invent. Hardly any invention can happen, if there is no fertile ground, as being among morons requires different goals and skills to survive and adapt - with creativity.

Autistic people also are no anti-reproduction either - modern society is in general against reproduction, as there is overpopulation on this planet.

There are no problems to reproduce, if female is autistic, as she has much higher chances to find a partner and produce autistic offsprings, but it is more complicated for autistic males to find a partner and without a partner there is no reproduction even if males are pro-reproduction.
