orra··on Amazon ditches 'just walk out' checkouts at its grocery stores
Scan as you shop goes back way further! Safeway UK had it, and they were bought over yonks ago.

Looks like they had it in 1996, 28 years ago. https://www.supermarketnews.com/archive/safeway-uk-expands-s...

Worth about $131 million right? That escalated quickly, as they say.

Wow, I can't believe how blatant their non-compliance is. That'll be some interesting legal advice they have.
orra··on Webb and Hubble confirm Universe's expansion rate
You're asking to go too far back in time.

The difficulty is we don't know what happened in the first planck second after the big bang, let alone before the big bang (if that's meaningful).

We haven't unified quantum mechanics and relativity. Hence we can't be certain that singularities exist, or that the universe started off in a singularity.

orra··on Webb and Hubble confirm Universe's expansion rate
> we’ve been using the 13.8 billion cosmological age estimate ever since I started brushing up my layman's understanding of the subject.

I remembered the age of the universe as as 13.7 billion years, but I wasn't sure why that was.

Well, the initial WMAP results in 2003 supported an age of 13.7 billion years. Later results nudged this upwards to 13.8 billion years. Of course, all the results have error bars.

orra··on Yi: Open Foundation Models by 01.AI
The repo source code is Apache 2.0 licensed, but the weights are not.

Just in case anybody else is excited then misled by their tagline "Building the Next Generation of Open-Source and Bilingual LLMs".

orra··on On the Double-Slit Experiment and Quantum Interference in the Wolfram Model (2020)
It's an interesting question but matrix mechanics is already a thing. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matrix_mechanics

For me it's a reminder that physics describes how quantum systems evolve, but it doesn't (in a sense) tell us what those systems are. Are particles waves? Matrices? Excitations of a field?

Each of these descriptions works, so I can't exclusively say any one of them is what particles really are. Bring a macroscopic being is philosophically frustrating.

I hope Microsoft is keeping bsdtar/libarchive up to date. IIRC they weren't.

I'm afraid I don't share your enthusiasm. There are open source Dolphin models, but the ones based on Yi are not, because Yi is not.
orra··on App store to be 'split in two' ahead of EU iPhone sideloading deadline: report
The law is called “Regulation (EU) 2022/1925 of the European Parliament and of the Council on contestable and fair markets in the digital sector”.

It's not an outrageous conclusion that the law bans blatantly unfair practices, when that's what it sets out to do.

orra··on App store to be 'split in two' ahead of EU iPhone sideloading deadline: report
Of course they can't collect ”commission” on payments they're not involved with. The entire point of the Act is to crack down on anticompetitive behaviour. Your example is textbook, and I am certain the text of the law bans it.

No, there's a problem with both. This was a Content ID complaint, not a DMCA takedown.

Wait, why are expenses deducted from profits, as opposed to before profits? Is OP doing something wrong, or is Romanian corporation tax different from normal?
orra··on Is Tetr.io Legal?
You're putting words in other people's mouths.

Nonetheless, OP was raising awareness. The more awareness is raised, the more developers will be aware. Then, more developers will have to make a conscious choice (whether good or bad).

orra··on Clang now makes binaries an original Pi B+ can't run
Yeah, Raspbian doesn't seem to be developed as a community project. There's no package tracker[1] like Debian or Ubuntu. I suppose they don't tend to diverge much, in practice.

Anyway, I suppose this all means Raspberry Pi OS/Raspbian are able to patch this, without requiring it to first be fixed in Debian or Clang.

orra··on Clang now makes binaries an original Pi B+ can't run
To answer your incidental question, Raspian is maintained by Raspberry Pi folks, not Debian.

Not sure why you're excusing mis-selling. Legal small print isn't allowed to contradict the key points and larger text, of the context of the sale.
orra··on A Nouveau graphics driver update
Yes, that works, but I didn't suggest it because it's riskier and takes way longer.

The whole filesystem has to be moved, instead of just the excess data.

Although this is usually successful, my advice would be: don't have a power outage if you're moving the whole filesystem.

orra··on A Nouveau graphics driver update
However, you could consider shrinking your main partition using gparted live. Then put a new /boot at the end. Of course, you'd lose the original /boot partition space, however.
orra··on Adobe's buy of Figma is 'likely' bad for developers, rules UK regulator
It's only one possible remedy, but yes. Facebook was forced to sell Giphy.

I presume the CMA doesn't have worldwide jurisdiction (I mean, even hypothetically, under UK law). However, if a merger went ahead against its wishes, I presume it could easily block the Figma portion of Adobe operating in the UK.

orra··on Why Does My 'Efficient' Dishwasher Take a Zillion Minutes for a Load?
I've had good experiences with AEG and Samsung, but a lot of large companies are inconsistent, so I sympathise.

Too far often I've also had new and nearly-new appliances develop faults. This is frustrating, but if the warranty support is good, then at least I'm left with an efficient and functioning machine, when they're done.

Generally, I'd recommend buying appliances on a credit card, so that the credit card company is equally liable. This is case the appliance breaks, or underperforms so much that it's not fit for purpose.

orra··on Why Does My 'Efficient' Dishwasher Take a Zillion Minutes for a Load?
Well, if you buy 2-star reviewed appliances appliances they'll perform shit. But plenty of energy efficient appliances perform fantastically. For example, from AEG, Bosch, Haier, LG, Miele, Samsung, or Zamisso.

> Front-loaders struggle to even wash a bath towel.

A farcical claim.

orra··on Why Does My 'Efficient' Dishwasher Take a Zillion Minutes for a Load?
Precisely, commercial dishwashers don't clean dishes. They sterilise already clean plates.
orra··on Why Does My 'Efficient' Dishwasher Take a Zillion Minutes for a Load?
If your dishwasher isn't performing well on eco mode for typical loads, then you have a bad dishwasher. Good dishwashers exist. I'd recommend looking at impartial reviews, like Which?.

Spending an extra £100 on a better dishwasher, to wash at 50 °C, will pay itself back several times, over the lifetime of the dishwasher. It adds up. You're wasting a fortune by washing dishes at say 70 °C.

Also, pre rising dishes is an anti pattern, a bad habit which people have gotten into. These days the advice is specifically to not do it. Otherwise you're fooling the sensors, etc. Plus, energy efficient cycles are long, giving plenty of time for the dishes to soak and clean.

If dishes aren't coming out clean, and your dishwasher doesn't have terrible reviews, then buy a bottle of dishwasher cleaner for £3, and put that in an empty hot cycle. That'll refresh the dishwasher to as-new performance. Clean the filter too, obviously.
