organicfigs··on Ask HN: Why did you leave the tech industry?
About to start med school, I looked around in the tech industry and never found a role model and found that distressing. I never met a single person in 10 years in the industry and said "I aspire to problem-solve like him/her" or "this is the career trajectory I want to take". I also never wanted to be in tech, was a premed in college, but after taking 1 CS class before the twitter IPO and getting internships at a string of popular companies I somehow became locked into the CS degree.
organicfigs··on Why is Maxwell's theory so hard to understand? (2007) [pdf]
One of my best memories in college was going through wedge product, differential forms and connections, and its application in the derivation of Maxwell's equations. When going through it, I always assumed someone came in and wrote those generalized forms (for students of differential forms: no pun intended ;) of his equations 50-100 years later. It's crazy to think that's how he approached E&M from a preliminary perspective.
organicfigs··on AWS Ground Station
I'm getting jealous. After a career on the software side of communications (r&d in ble and 4g) I left for the healthcare industry for many reasons but mainly driven by the fact the projects were so monotone. Had I been able to apply to work for a project like this, I surely would have enjoyed staying around longer.
organicfigs··on Chloroquine, past and present
I'm not a doctor (yet) but I believe quinine has immunosuppressant effects so you don't want to take it preemptively, only when you have your own immune system in overdrive.
organicfigs··on Linux Kernel Teaching
Thank you, made my March a little better :)
organicfigs··on Linux Kernel Teaching
Awesome! I can't wait to dig through this, I've been wanting to contribute to the linux kernel for over 2 years but no one on the linux mailing lists seemed interested in helping a newbie (so much for kernel newbies). Thanks for putting this together.
organicfigs··on Genius sues Google and LyricFind over allegedly stolen song lyrics
Unfortunately, that article isn't surprising at all
organicfigs··on Genius sues Google and LyricFind over allegedly stolen song lyrics
On a side note, I met the founder of Genius (then called RapGenius) at the first hackMIT. It's been 7 years but I still remember him insulting multiple people and being embarrassingly immature.
organicfigs··on Helping newcomers become contributors to open projects
I've had a career about half of yours (where does the time go?) and this has been my experience as well. I would have loved to contribute to at least half a dozen projects in the last couple of years.
organicfigs··on Helping newcomers become contributors to open projects
After being a subscriber to hn for the last decade, a post I'm affected enough by to create an account.

After wanting to contribute to open source projects for my entire career (I've previously worked at FAANGs and am a technical lead now), I've had 0% success in attaining this goal. Here's been my experience:

-reached out to the Apache Tomcat team -> silence

-joined Linux Kernel Newbies -> code is such terrible quality I might unlearn somethings

-joined LLVM's mailing list -> lack of issues for beginners
I'm now looking to contributing to Spring Boot, Apache Cassandra, or Hadoop, but I didn't imagine it would be difficult to contribute to open source.
