orenlindsey··on Tom Scott: After ten years, it's time to stop making videos [video]
Don't forget Vsauce! He doesn't make as many videos anymore but he has a huge backlog of great videos.
orenlindsey··on Web browser as GUI, with your preferred language in the backend
This seems like way too much work when people have been doing things like this in different ways for years (just look at Replit, it runs a full IDE and runs on 4gb Chromebooks).

Maybe I'm misunderstanding this project, but you don't have to reinvent the wheel.

orenlindsey··on Tom Scott: After ten years, it's time to stop making videos [video]
Tom Scott has been one of the best YouTube creators ever. He deserves a break.
orenlindsey··on Beginner dev looks at how YouTube sends videos
Here's my favorite site for downloading YouTube videos. https://github.com/micahlt/vesper

It's made by a friend of mine, I thought he had a writeup about it, but I can't find it.

orenlindsey··on January 1, 2024 is Public Domain Day
We've never had something of this prominence go into public domain.
orenlindsey··on A 1690s Peanut is Reborn
Probably due to selecting for bigger peanuts, they've lost the flavor they used to have. I hope I can try these someday.
orenlindsey··on Jaw-Dropping News: Boeing and Lockheed Just Matched SpaceX's Prices
That's crazy. I'm glad SpaceX has pushed the competition forwards. In making their rockets better, they've made the whole space industry better.
orenlindsey··on Tracking developer build times to decide if the M3 MacBook is worth upgrading
Apple Silicon devices can get the same performance as a desktop in a laptop size. The only reason to get a desktop is if you need the Ultra chip.

And, the laptop gives you extra freedom for very, very little sacrifice (at least for Apple Silicon devices). I don't see any way you can argue for a desktop.

orenlindsey··on Tracking developer build times to decide if the M3 MacBook is worth upgrading
VSCode works perfectly.
orenlindsey··on Tracking developer build times to decide if the M3 MacBook is worth upgrading
This is pretty cool, also I love how you can use AI to read the data. Would take minutes if not hours to do it even just a year ago.
orenlindsey··on In 2024, please switch to Firefox
I'll get downvoted for saying this but Safari isn't as bad as people say. The only reason I use chrome is for one singular extension for a single site (and they would release the extension on Safari if it didn't cost $100 a year to do so)
orenlindsey··on 4B If Statements
That's hilarious. The best part is that he didn't even try to make good packages (not that hard) but just took the lazy route.
orenlindsey··on I am the fold (2015)
It's the default Vercel error page

orenlindsey··on Veritasium: The SAT Question Everyone Got Wrong [video]
Well, there's not really one solution. Watch the video to see what I mean.
orenlindsey··on Veritasium: The SAT Question Everyone Got Wrong [video]
The point is that the question is vague and is open to multiple different "correct" answers. SAT questions should only have one correct answer, with no possibility of any others.
orenlindsey··on Japan to crack down on Apple and Google app store monopolies
I agree, Google is wayyyy less monopolistic than Apple. And it's absolutely hilarious that Google lost while Apple won.
orenlindsey··on Veritasium: The SAT Question Everyone Got Wrong [video]
The guy who figured this out (who Veritasium interviewed) is crazy smart.

Also, a lot of kids math problems (middle school and below) are super vague. I get that they're designed to teach a concept, but they could do it in a more exact/precise (idk what the word is) way.

orenlindsey··on US ban on some Apple Watch sales now in effect
Apple can't build a factory to produce Apple Watches before the entire situation would be resolved. And if they could, it would be much more expensive to run compared to making it in Vietnam (where they make it now).

It would just be a stopgap solution.

orenlindsey··on A list of Hacker News's undocumented features and behaviors
This list is pretty nice, I learned a lot from it.
orenlindsey··on Apple appeals US ban on Apple Watch
This isn't ending anytime soon.
orenlindsey··on Challenging projects every programmer should try (2019)
All of these are fairly easy to make in languages like Scratch but hard to make in lower-level ones. I don't know enough about coding theory and such to understand why, though.
orenlindsey··on UK becomes first G20 country to halve its carbon emissions
Good on them. More countries should follow.
orenlindsey··on Black Triangles (2014)
The black triangles are also a lot more fulfilling than other problems. When you get the foundation of your project finished, it feels so good. And you know that you can start doing the fun stuff with relative ease now that the hard part is over.
orenlindsey··on California Solar Duck Curve Gets Bigger
Good to see solar power getting more common, but we need batteries and storage to truly end carbon emissions.
orenlindsey··on DIY Night Clock Projector (2018)
It would be too bright for me. And it would probably be quite anxiety-inducing.
orenlindsey··on The Chevy Blazer EV Launch Has Gone from Rough to Worse as GM Issues Stop-Sale
This is why nobody likes American car brands. The brands that make them cut corners and things like this happen. Teslas are the only American-made cars that are somewhat high-quality.
orenlindsey··on Ask HN: How do I train a custom LLM/ChatGPT on my own documents in Dec 2023?
You can pay for a ChatGPT account and upload your own documents. I didn't do this myself but my dad uploaded 6 years of sermon transcripts from our church. It sounds exactly like the pastor.
orenlindsey··on A cargo plane flew 50 miles with no pilot onboard using a semi-automated system
That's pretty cool, but I can see some ways this could go wrong. A hostile nation or well-funded terrorist group (sometimes those are the same thing) could hijack a plane without even being on board.

I hope they work hard to make it secure. It'll be a while before humans are willing to get on board one of these planes.

orenlindsey··on Tell HN: Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas ya filthy animals!
