oreilles··on iTerm2 and AI Hype Overload
iTerm still do not send anything to a third party, you do, by willingfully using a feature that explicitely states so. If you have concern that iTerm would do something behind your back, then you shouldn't be using it in the first place.
oreilles··on iTerm2 and AI Hype Overload
> From reading that issue, it sounds like people are worried about compliance with security policies (whether personal or corporate)

This is incredibly stupid. If they don't trust iTerm to respect their privacy, why were they using it in the first place? For all they know it very well could have been sharing all their data without telling them from the very beginning. Alas, the tool is open source they could just audit instead of yelling at clouds but hey.

oreilles··on iTerm2 3.5.0
The feature requires an OpenAI API so it's not even on by default, you will have to configure it to be able to use it. Not to mention that you just have to not use it and boom, no communication will ever be made with OpenAI even if configured. That is a terrible use of the word "snooping".
oreilles··on AltStore. The first Apple approved alternative App Store
In Switzerland, Delta Emulator is not available in the App Store since Riley made it an AltStore exclusive in Europe. However, you cannot get AltStore either because Switzerland isn't part of the countries where Apple allows alternative stores: https://support.apple.com/fr-fr/118110#countries-and-regions.

oreilles··on Why is Prettier rock solid?
How can a person that introduces breaking changes in patch release and then just says everyone to piss off when facing critics (just because mister "has needs for this": https://github.com/prettier/prettier/issues/15553#issuecomme...) be a maintainer of such a widespread tool ?

I don't know about the others but you can use Dask on a single machine, and it's also the easiest way to use Dask. It allows parallelizing operations by splitting dataframes into partitions that get processed in individual cores on your machine. Performance boost over pandas can be 2x with zero config, and I've seen up to 5x on certain operations.
oreilles··on In 2024, please switch to Firefox
On macOS, the most annoying thing for me is the inability to use the native login to authenticate to apple web services. I have to type in my apple ID, my password, and then the code sent to one of my devices every time. On chrome and safari, I can just use my fingerprint or laptop password and done.
oreilles··on Skip the API, ship your database
Versioned views, materialized views or procedures are the solution to this. It is frequent that even internally, companies don't give access to their raw data but rather to a restricted schema containing a formated subset of it.
oreilles··on Why are our keyboard not wireless?
Bluetooth and AAA batteries also are industry standard and user replaceable. The 2nd gen Apple Wireless keyboard had a brilliant design to accomodate them (https://tech-rachat.com/1509-large_default/clavier-apple-mag...), and 15 years later you can still see them in the wild, working like day one.
oreilles··on How to speed up the Rust compiler
There is a very clear difference between compilation and interpretation: in scripting languages, a statement does not depend on the following ones to be executed, meaning that the code can just be read through. Compilation is different because the binary produced need to include the whole program, therefore the whole code has to be read and analyzed before the bytecode can be produced. Compile litterally means "group together".

So compilation time obviously only applies to compiled languages.

Saying that the compilation time is not a concern to you and shouldn't be to anyone is also very short sighted. I'm pretty confident that you would consider it to be a problem if a "Hello world" took a week to compile. Maybe you meant "Compilation is fast enough for me", which is fine, but there is no reason why your speed expectation should be more legitimate that anyone else's.

oreilles··on How to speed up the Rust compiler
I don't understand this take. Correct and fast are absolutely not mutually exclusive, wether it apply to tests or compilation. The rust compiler is not slow because of all the checks it performs, it's slow because of the way those checks are implemented.

> If you want short compile times, use interpreted languages

Interpreted languages are not compiled, so this sentence doesn't make sense.

> [...] There was nothing missing from so many beautiful works, except that it was true that the tooth was made of gold. When a goldsmith had examined it, it was found to be gold leaf applied to the tooth with great skill; but books were written before the goldsmith was consulted.

> I am not so convinced of our ignorance by the things that are, and whose reason is unknown to us, than by those that are not, and whose reason we find. This means that not only do we not have the principles that lead to the truth, but that we also have others that accommodate the false very well.

oreilles··on PyPI Was Subpoenaed
Not so much, there is plenty of other type of speech that is protected by the first amendment and is illegal in countries that don't have such thing in their constitution. For exemple, in France, saying "Macron is trash" can get you to jail (https://rmc.bfmtv.com/actualites/police-justice/insultes-con..., https://www.lepoint.fr/societe/une-quinquagenaire-jugee-pour...)

Finding a decent croissant is fairly easy in Paris, but if you've ever tasted an actually good croissant, buttery but not sickening, airy but not empty, crispy but not dry, you know how incredibly difficult to find those are.
oreilles··on US Department of Energy: Fusion Ignition Achieved
Cheaper and cleaner energy has never in the history of enery lead to global reduction of pollution, actually pretty much the opposite. Plus, nuclear power is already virtually free and has been available since the 1970s. If stopping climate change was an energy source problem, it would have already been solved then.
oreilles··on iPhone = Privacy?
> The only one I agree on is the image scanning for CSAM. The idea of a device I own acting as a state informer using AI to detect what it thinks is a crime is not my idea of a step forward.

There's also a convenient place to turn it off: CSAM scanning doesn't happen if you don't use iCloud photos/files syncing.

oreilles··on Mozilla claims Apple, Google and Microsoft force users to use default browsers
Keychain is opt-in. If you have it configured on your iPhone, it's because you accepted it when configuring your iPhone for the first time. You had to choice to refuse it - and you still have the possibility to disable it in your iPhone settings.

oreilles··on The absurdity of Europe burning wood for energy
The single argument in that tweet list is that wood not locally sourced requires transormation and transportation, making its use as a heat source not carbon neutral. Maybe this applies to the UK. But in France, 30% of our land are forests, and these covers 100% of our firewood supplies. In this context, yes, using wood for heat is viable, renewable and (very close to) carbon neutral. As always in this kind of misinformation posts, the author seems to forget that transformation and transportation is also needed for coal. Even at its peak production, France was still dependant on other countries for its supply. Not to mention the impact on both public health and the environment being the primary reason why we stopped mining it at all. Yes, particle pollution is a concern, but burning wood for heat is forbidden anyway in dense areas, and not once in our neighborhood where most houses have wood stove did it ever cause any problem - which it definely could have, since we actually moved to the countryside because of city pollution related health issues my sister were having.

oreilles··on A Programming Language Database
The definition of a programming language is a language that can be used to write computer programs. A turing machine is not necessarily a computer program, and a programming language isn't necessarily turing complete.
oreilles··on A Programming Language Database
JSON can be used to write an abstract syntax tree of a program, but the specific grammar used and the way of converting it into a program would be the programming language, not JSON itself.
oreilles··on A Programming Language Database
It's turing complete "so long as you consider user interactions to be part of the “execution” of CSS". So no, it cannot be used to write computer programs.
oreilles··on A Programming Language Database
These can only be used to describe and format documents, not to write programs, which is why they are markup languages and not programming languages.
oreilles··on A Programming Language Database
A programming language is a notation for writing programs, which JSON isn't, not more than any other storage format or markup language.
